- another_angel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One thing is for certain. When all is said and done, this company will have the undying gratitude of a very loyal customer base. ~Angel~

They're also providing server support to the NO govt (providing critical infrastructure), documenting the disaster (educating those who haven't been there as to what will/could happen in a similar situation) and are providing an excellent example of how people CAN response to a crisis situation. - carrotflower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How long do you think they'll stay - I doubt they have a year's worth of Coke and Pringles. I hope everyone realizes that NO ONE is going to be living in New Oeleans for 6-12 months - MONTHS. The city is GONE. All I can say is that I hope the roof has a helipad so they don't have to shoot thier way past the looters. Have a ball fellas - your servers are really making a difference!
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not only that they are there for their servers, but they went out at the request of another party, and retrieved a server and brought it back to their office.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jesus Christ, I didn't realize they took that 99.9% uptime that seriously!
Wherever these guys relocate to I'm gonna go with them as my host. - skyshark88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Internet land lines are still in place and are powered on there own.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm glad i picked directnic to register my domains years ago. these guys are definitely professsional even in a situation like this
- scottbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's not get carried away here. It's all well and good that people are blogging the event and keeping websites alive, but you have to remember that other people are barely surviving (and some not at all) and they probably don't give two sh*ts that someone's website is online.
- alexsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now thats the definition of a hero.
- CableCarrier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These guys are an inspiration to us all.
- GuyNextDoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never realized how many businesses are trying to keep some sort of operation going on while their city falls apart around them! I heard on the news this morning, that they needed water in the Bell South building so they could refill "chillers", which I guess keep circuits from over-heating (duh?). If they overheat, much of the southeast may lose landline telephone!
Interesting...I'll digg it. - kolanos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A data center in New Orleans is a poor business decision if you ask me. Even if it's on the 27th floor.
- Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True sysop will die for his servers:)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i admire them.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm surprised they still have a hardwire connection to the internet...
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, plus these guys are ex-military and definately very skilled in handling extremely critical situations, like a category 5 hurricane. It would be hell for you or me, but these guys can handle it much better.
- ext237, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't feel bad. I posted http://digg.com/links/A_guy_is_doing_live_blogging_in_a_New_Orleans_Data_Center
5 days ago (three days before your post) and it only got 25 diggs. Perhaps one must be in the "in" crowd of Digg to get on the homepage? - Pilgrim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the blog, he says. All of their internet providers have dropped except for one OC3 down the street, which may run out of fuel tommorow.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wonder what the AOL guys did during that tsunami in India.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0copy/paste *websites transfered*
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am going to move my servers to there DC ;)
- osofrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has been dugg at least 3 other times, but it is a great story. They also made it into the online Wired Magazine:
http://www.wired.com/news/hurricane/0,2904,68725,00.html - reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These guys are awesome. It's probably safer for them to be in there than outside anyway.
- AndroidKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0these guys are hardcore. i cant help but think of dawn of the dead (thats the newest right?) where people are on the roofs communicating with dry erase boards while all hell breaks loose at ground level.
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hope the boss is giving his workers a very nice bonus at the end of the year for having to live at work for the time being . . .
- bradeshbach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how do they still have internet?
- skyshark88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude he is the co-owner of the business., and man that is what great companies are built on ... the shoulders of great men....
- wthnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the wired story "still operates, powered by a 750-kilowatt diesel generator and connected to the rest of the world by a fiber optic connection buried deep underneath New Orleans' flooded streets."
http://www.wired.com/news/planet/0,2782,68725,00.html?tw=rss.TOP
Fiber is non conductive so it wouldn't be affected by water. - thing-fish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The blog of the DirectNIC guy in the story is here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/
It's loaded with first-hand accounts of what's happening. Very worthy, though very sad, reading. - EatenByAGrue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm guessing some sort of satellite connection is keeping them online. Anyone else have a guess?
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey guys, can we focus here and check out this web site
