- jboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74Because some people have the dissorder to name everything?
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+69Well, it is called 'Digg' =]
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67Ohh.. Neophiliac.
I saw the headline in the queue and thought it said "If you love Digg you might be a Necrophiliac"
That was a shocking few seconds. - renegade334, on 10/12/2007, -3/+56There comes a moment when all the cables, leads, battery chargers and power adaptors we have ever owned, gather together and assemble themselves around us and ask us the terrible question, "WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOUR LIFE?"
- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47There are way too many conditions people get diagnosed with lately. Why do we have to have a special word for every possible attributes a person can have?
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44jboi: Oh, you mean nomenclaturephilia.
- richjwild, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Did anyone else laugh at "Japanese scientists have fingered an enzyme"?
- noouch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26What's with this trend of labeling every little behavioral quirk as a "disorder"?
- LowenSoDium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Wdot: I think you are thinking of someone who is a Lexiconnoisseur
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19@joeshlub: Welcome to the "it's not my fault" generation. :/
- wstrucke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19... because everyone is special.
HUG - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17That's hot.
- omnicore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13They do it so that people will buy into the idea that they are sick, then the drug companies will create their magic pill to make you better and them richer.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The article calls us "overeducated."
How can you be OVEReducated? After all, I've only got a BA - There are lots of people with Masters, and PHDs... - WDot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Fortunately for me, I still own a Game Gear! I'm free from this terrible condition!
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Do you find yourself being fascinated with seemingly meaningless pieces of technology? Do you have a hard time concentrating at the office when someone brings in a new computer? Do you look for technology everywhere you go? These are the symptions of Neophilia, a newly diagnosed medical disorder that could be serious. If you answered yes to any of these questions, please ask your doctor about NeoRight, the safe, smart way to remove yourself from technology. NeoRight is not right for everyone, however. Please to not take NeoRight if you are pregnant, smoking, caring with babies, or breathing. Side-effects of NeoRight may include but are not limited to, Headache, Diahrehea, Loss of bladder control, Numbness, Blankness of mind, Loss of appetite, Frigidity, Paralyzation of the legs and blindness. "
- saudama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That's just another word coined up by people who want to give everything a name.
But we already do have a name, and it is not a disorder. It's called being a geek. - MerlinTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What other kind of fake diseases can we just make up???
- Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I think that what you've been telling me is the truth, or a version of it. I don't know whether to trust you completely. But I've got my sign. If the Bavarian Illuminati don't exist, something does. So, then, where do we go from here?"
Hagbard smiled. "Spoken like a true ***** neophilus, George. Welcome to the tribe. We want to recruit you, because you are so gullible. That is, gullible in the right way. You're skeptical about conventional wisdom, but attracted to unorthodox ideas. An unfailing mark of ***** neophilus. The human race is not divided into the irrational and the rational, as some idealists think. All humans are irrational, but there are two different kinds of irrationally--those who love old ideas and hate and fear new ones, and those who despise old ideas and joyfully embrace new ones. ***** neophobus and ***** neophilus. Neophobus is the original humanstock, the stock that hardly changed at all for the first four million years of human history. Neophilus is the creative mutation that has been popping up at regular intervals during the past million years, giving the race little forward pushes, the kind you give a wheel to make it spin faster and faster. Neophilus makes a lot of mistakes, but he or she moves. They live life the way it should be lived, ninety-nine percent mistakes, and one percent viable mutation."
-- Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea (1975)
Neophilia was already coined in the Illuminatus! Trilogy to be representative of people with a love of unorthodox thought, not a love of new toys. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I thought the title was "I love you Digg you made me into a necrophiliac" hehe sorry.
- Flooq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8gcube9x: The thing is, with every little personality trait being called a disorder, one wonders what the norm is because it seems to be more strictly defined every time a study like this is released.
- Tochi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Sorry boss, I can't come in because I have Neophilia."
Then go buy some new technology! - projektmayhem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Can I take time off work/college because my "problem"?
- drchadwick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I was like, "FINALLY, someone understands me! .... oh, wait. nevermind"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"I saw the headline in the queue and thought it said "If you love Digg you might be a Necrophiliac""
HA! I saw the exact same thing and instantly thought, "how the hell did a troll post make it to the front page?!?" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12At first I thought it said necrophiliac, lol.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Damnit, I'm sick of classifying -every- human behavior as a 'disorder'. You know what? I'm going to try making up my own disorders with freedict.com's english-latin dictionary.
illudophiliac -- One who makes fun of others; a bully.
decessiophiliac -- One who retreats; a coward.
putophiliac -- One who must think
To hell with it. You know what? How about "singulariphiliac"? Singularis means "unique" in latin. The disorder of being unique, i.e., one who is oneself, and not others. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Jack Thompson made up this disease.
- kevinmoore, on 06/13/2009, -1/+7A retronamcophiliac?
- Tochi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Pretty soon we will all be pill popping robots that have no unique traits or quirks and it'll be like living in Stepford.
- wolkengrau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The page this article comes from features a Best of Big Brother on frontpage and basketball as top-story at the moment.
Don't let yourself get called "overeducated" by them. That's just too make their standard audience feel better. - Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"At risk"
"Disorder"
"Diagnosed"
Jeez, the article makes it sound like it's a bad thing. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5These days, not doing what you are told to is actually listed as a disorder, and there are drugs to treat it. Can't remember what the technical name is though.
- sirmalloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This sounds very much like the Penny Arcade a couple days ago talking about the XBox Live Anywhere service: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/06/19
- Wolfbeta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sony is betting on 5 million Neophiliacs to buy their console without any games.
- aristotle1990, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Japanese scientists have fingered an enzyme"
How interesting... - twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Marketing folks discovered this crap years ago. It's called conspicuous consumerism. It's not new. Just a new name for the same old dog.
And I especially liked the reach-around you got with "highly intelligent and over-educated." I guarantee that's what rocketed this to the front page! "Look, I read Digg, ergo I am smart!" Obviously, whoever posted this hasn't spent too much time in the reply posts section, after school gets out. ;-) - prytz420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"But whether there is a genetic predisposition to be more--or less--of a neophiliac, there’s one thing that is certain. The general desire for the newfound to some degree in many people is a key component in our modern economy and popular culture"
"“If we all as humans weren’t already predisposed for a desire to be stimulated by new stuff, a lot of the structure on which capitalism is founded would not exist,” says Thompson. So if this desire ever ceased, big problems would ensue."
This is illuminati all over.
***** Neophilus FTW! - Kimi3013, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's what I'm thinking. Using this logic, someone who wants a horse has a disorder too. As do people who want to go shopping for carrots for tea. I'd hate to think how many disorders people have on average.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was going to comment on the article, but my restless leg syndrome is acting up again.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I thought Trinity from The Matrix was the only Neophiliac...
- syberghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is an attempt by fuddy-duddies and Luddites to make it sound like there is something wrong with everybody else.
- Sheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am going to confirm it.
Yes.
You are a necrophiliac. - Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How the hell can you be OVEReducated?
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's not a disorder...it's called a desire to be informed. ***** this mentality that every type of behavior is a 'disorder' so that drug companies can create some sort of cure-all to market to people. What a society of pussies we've become.
- JangoFett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So what are you called if you really like Dig Dug?
- Nick05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wouldn't being interested in new things be a trait? It seems harsh to call it a "disorder".
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What did the last part of your post say? I went blind just before I could read it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who modded this guy down? mod+
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Soooo.. how do they figure this in the light that high levels of MAO is linked with depression? (Hence MAO Inhibiters as a depression treatment, although it's fallen out of favor because of somewhat extreme side effects). Perhaps these people just buy more things in an atempt to counter depression.
Either way this is just a pop-fluff article without much scientific substance.
And shouldn't it be Novophilia? -
