- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -5/+191Pity a minor can't enter into a legal contract, hire people, register a company/be a director etc... So this "startup" will be without employees, funding or... *anything* for at least 5 years.
What makes this a start-up, and not just some kid with a website? Techcrunch is really scraping the barrel with this. - taketaketake, on 01/06/2009, -3/+138WEBSITE ≠ START-UP
- fattony80, on 01/05/2009, -2/+98Yeah good for him. But it isn't really a startup as it doesn't conduct any kind of business. I wouldn't hold my breath for google to come knocking on the door.
- moorey, on 01/06/2009, -3/+83Hi, I have $200k in my bank account so you have no excuse to be poor.
- tama00, on 01/06/2009, -0/+69So he made a wordpress blog with a registration page and called it a social network. Congrats kid but its no start up.
P.S who the hell is digging this *****. - rhysboy84, on 01/06/2009, -0/+57He needs less start ups, more sit ups.
- quacker912, on 01/06/2009, -3/+51I mean, it's impressive for a 13 year old, but the site isn't really anything special...
- ArmedRebel, on 01/06/2009, -0/+43Apologies...but..what defines a "start-up"? Is it just a new website?
Sounds like this kid just used his mom's money to get get a domain/cheap host, downloaded some free PHP blog system and copied onto said host and called it his own. If this kid built his own blog system this might be impressive, but just copying/pasting some already made script doesn't take much skill. He probably posted 500 threads in some web coding forum with just that anyway. - Spymodhf, on 01/06/2009, -1/+41...with a grand total of 50 members.
- Hale, on 01/06/2009, -0/+37If installing Wordpress counts as launching a "startup", consider me thrice started!
- phenom2k7, on 01/06/2009, -0/+36I don't think this kid has discovered masturbating yet.
- mileswj, on 01/06/2009, -5/+38WTF.
Ok seriously, this is nothing special. Its a ***** wordpress system with a horrible layout and design. Like that takes any damn skill to install.
This moron kid probably doesn't know anything about markup, yet alone server side scripting and his mother probably pays all the hosting bills.
What a joke, he gives web developers a bad name. - jamesdew, on 01/06/2009, -1/+32Me too and it was much harder to make websites in my day.... you had to code in html, in the snow with no shoes.
- cuecat, on 01/06/2009, -4/+34Dugg for
"She [his mom] said she doesn’t worry about him as he’s “very sensible”, but she thinks there is a role for schools in educating children about safe web use, rather than a top-down approach from government." - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+29His mom says he's sensible enough to steer clear of "bad sites," ok cool, but I have to say at 13, I would have been on redtube everyday
- Headinawheel, on 01/06/2009, -0/+27Dude, I have a Geocities page, is that why Google won't come and buy my Start-Up?
- rodrigo74, on 01/06/2009, -1/+28@CoreyTamas: can I ask my mom to pay my bills, feed me etc while I work on my startup as well?
THis is one stupid article..anyone can start a business, the real challenge is to make sure that your company is not among the 90% that die after a couple of years.
Good for him, though. Just a stupid article. - kiwihat, on 01/06/2009, -3/+29Kid needs to get outside a bit, he's on his way to some serious weight problems and a life of solitude.
- SniperZero, on 01/06/2009, -1/+24yeah i wouldn't have an excuse if my mum paid for all the developers and servers and advertising....
/s - quacker912, on 01/06/2009, -1/+23Yes, actually I had my own website at the age of 14. I wasn't on TechCrunch with my ***** website...
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+22I once had a user group on groups.google. Was admin and everything.
- yaosio, on 01/06/2009, -0/+21I also had a worthless website when I was 13, nobody interviewed me about it.
- Kyan, on 01/06/2009, -0/+19Good for him? I mean kudos for sending out the press release, but all he has done is start a blog.
Next up: Little kid launches start-up. 13-year old Sally signed up for a MySpace account today...
This Scot kid's only big break was getting on the front page of Digg. Now his visitor numbers will rocket and if he lands advertisers this week before they crash back down to roughly zero, then maybe he'll make a few bucks.
But it's just a blog, folks. - r3zonance, on 01/06/2009, -0/+19Yeah, isn't "educating children about safe web use" a parent's job?
- Meep3D, on 01/06/2009, -0/+18I don't like to be ageist, which is why it annoys me when mediocrity is hailed as genius provided it comes from someone young enough. If anything, socially, for some inexplicable reason we tend to think anyone under the age of 16/18 would fail a turing test.
It reminds me of that other thing a few years ago where some kid used some VB with an IE drop-in and was hailed as the next Bill Gates.
When one of these child 'prodigys' doessomething actually innovative I'll give props, but this isn't one of those cases. - stagnate, on 01/06/2009, -10/+28He is quite fat, esp in the face. Prob doenst need to worry though, what girl wouldnt go for a guy who built a blog when he was 13. Also this story would have been better 10 years ago before absolutely anyone could make a blog site.
- Topher06, on 01/05/2009, -5/+23Anybody can startup a company, you just incorporate and create a website. I don't find anything impressive about people starting up a company. Most start-ups are scams anyways, designed to gain investor dollars into something that is hyped about as the "next" thing, and then a year later the exec's bail on the company taking their investment dollars with them.
Make a few million in actual dollars (not given to you by investors) selling an actual service or product (not just a website), then I will be impressed. - x713, on 01/06/2009, -0/+18Sorry kid, but installing a script... yawn. Bury.
- floort, on 01/06/2009, -1/+16The main reason is that 30 year-olds have to worry about things like rent, food and staying alive. I wish someone would take care of my living expenses so I could delve full-time into building a blog that will never make me any money.
- Jeffler, on 01/06/2009, -0/+15Looking more into it, all he did was install buddypress, which is a straight up social networking script based on WordpressMU.
The site's Alexa is 3.2M. That's comparable to about 20 unique guests a day.
And its pagerank 1, so until today, he was linked to by like 3 people.
THIS COUNTS AS A STARTUP? REALLY? - groovechamp30, on 01/06/2009, -0/+14Its more of a website than a startup...
- Jeffler, on 01/06/2009, -0/+12Alright, got a screenshot. Also got the buddypress default design to compare it to. He's done NOTHING other than change some graphics.

http://i41.tinypic.com/2hebp8x.jpg - OutlawAdidas, on 01/06/2009, -0/+12Back in my day, we made startup websites on AngelFire and Lycos.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -6/+18Regardless of some of the semi positive feelings, he did make it on TechCrunch. He's doing something right...
- TheMachine1, on 01/06/2009, -1/+12My mum had sex with them all.
- nigelmansell, on 01/06/2009, -1/+12EPIC FAIL
- cristianorem, on 01/06/2009, -1/+11truly an inspiring story
- TheMachine1, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9START-UP = You were able to con some peeps out of some cash to start up.
- crossmr, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9"And I daresay ScotBlog has a ways to go in finding a business model beyond advertising, and admittedly he has no startup costs - these are paid by his mum! However, It’s great to see Scott show this kind of initiative and I think it’s worth-while encouraging teenagers in the UK to be more entrepreneurial." Its a digital lemonade stand, not a genuine business.
- Headinawheel, on 01/06/2009, -0/+8OHH YEAH? WELL I ***** SOLID GOLD BRICKS AND I NEVER GOT MY OWN NEWS ARTICLE!!
oh well... - antibastard, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7gotta give him props for making that decent-looking design look absolutely *****
- sLydE, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7Abso-*****-lutely.
- headzoo, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Except he hasn't done anything! His web host is servage.net, which is a cheap $7 a month hosting company. The host, like most cheap hosts, have a one-click WordPress installation.
So what has this kid done? Oh, he sent a few emails to tech sites. Big deal.. Teens these days can send emails in their sleep. - petebot, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6I strill remember waiting for jpgs to load. And I couldn't even click on another tab while I was waiting!
- markedOne, on 01/06/2009, -1/+7wow.
- Anteros, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6You don't have to quit your job to start a online business, I have been running a website for years it provides a nice second income.
- spooniam, on 01/06/2009, -1/+7The difference is, if this kid's "start-up" fails, he still gets taken care of by his parents. If mine fails, I lose my house and live in a box.
- coldeh, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6The people who wrote this article clearly don't understand the internet. I could teach a chimp to install wordpress.
- Genma, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6can someone please explain to me the part where he made money or devised some sort of plan/model to do so? I don't understand how this has anything to do with business. am I being slow or is digg still *****?
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5The difference is if he fails, he's still a broke-ass 13 year old.
