- Goblinkiller, on 11/24/2007, -4/+88So this means no more Linux-torrents in France? No - why does people insist on saying P2P when they mean piracy? P2P is a very good technique fit for many other things than piracy...
- 3210, on 11/24/2007, -2/+71Stupid decision but, P2P will continue in France, as it does in other countries. Users will begin to look more into how they can dodge the system that is set in place to catch them when they are downloading.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/24/2007, -2/+37Time to storm the Bastille again.
- TritonX, on 11/24/2007, -0/+34So this could turn out to be a positive point. It could bring us a new protocol, or new encryption, either way, technology always evolved when there was a need. I'm just wondering how they will implement it? It's another stupid idea pushed forward by the lobbyist.
- Ainsleh, on 11/24/2007, -4/+29Inaccurate.
It's not "If you P2P download in France".
It's "If you download illegal content in France".
Big Difference. - Androfire, on 11/24/2007, -7/+32Sacrebleu?
- justinx0r, on 11/24/2007, -0/+23But it's cool when European countries regulate the internet and ban certain types of speech, right? Right?
- HerrEisenheim, on 11/24/2007, -3/+24That's great for pirates, but it kills it for anyone who uses P2P for non-piracy purposes.
- phantomex, on 11/24/2007, -2/+22There's Mr. Mark Cuban's answer to his problems. He can move to France and live happily ever after. Totalitarian France sucks.
- gowingsgo, on 11/24/2007, -2/+21As usual, France lets themselves get stepped on. What else is new.
- duggtodeath, on 11/24/2007, -2/+21So are the media corps paying the lost revenues to the ISPs?
- luchid, on 11/24/2007, -1/+17Selling guns and cars should be illegal because guns and cars kill people.
- XTrek, on 11/24/2007, -0/+15These guys will just force users to get vpn/proxy accounts in a more reasonable country. Tunnel your way to freedom...
- edzilla, on 11/24/2007, -0/+14One of the quotes from our great(or not) president, Mr Sarkozy: (loosely translated by me)
"of course filtering the internet is possible, they do it in china, so why can't we?" - inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+13I'm making notations on my charts. French waters be treacherous for pirates!
- allan17, on 11/24/2007, -2/+15Oh, ***** off. Up here in Canada we are free to download from P2P networks without the fear of ever being sued. So tell me how Socialism is to blame?
- crypticone, on 11/24/2007, -2/+15If you use your car in criminal activity no more roads for you. If you steal something in a shop no more shopping for you.
- Factionrider, on 11/24/2007, -2/+14It was a misleading title, read the article.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/24/2007, -0/+12Force Encryption.
- sb66, on 11/24/2007, -3/+13Try losing the knee jerk stupidity and use your head. France currently has a right wing government.
- nnnr, on 11/24/2007, -2/+11"this is the single most important initiative to help win the war on online piracy that we have seen so far.."
Haha, there are people that still believe you can win the war on drugs, piracy, poverty, and terror. Hooray for unwinnable "wars". - jumassillia, on 11/24/2007, -0/+9As a french I would say Vive la revolution ... Wtf ? no internet ?
Im sorry mr sarkozy lets go on strike once more - Ugoff, on 11/24/2007, -2/+11Let's say you use BitTorrent or any P2P software for legitimate uses (downloading linux distros, patches for games, open source software) and your ISP still decides to cut you off for "illegal activities". Do you still agree then?
- UnWeave, on 11/24/2007, -0/+9This just won't work. I can't see a popular ISP (I don't know the most widely used ISP in France) keeping check of ALL their users. It's going to be in the millions for some. Okay, maybe it will catch out the high-end users, but what about the occasional user? And even if they have an effective method of detecting illegal P2P activity, how can they differentiate between, for example, people sharing Linux distros, and those sharing movies? It's just going to encourage P2P developers to try harder to disguise their activities, it won't stop it.
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+8hey...you elected this guy!
- Gir53457, on 11/24/2007, -3/+9N we elected gore... Oh wait. You mean other countries can have retarded right wing conservative leaders?
- SharkyTech, on 11/24/2007, -0/+6I think that might be a bit extreme, considering the many uses of the internet. At very most the penalty should be speed limiting of pirates. How much music can they upload on dial-up?
- purpmint008, on 11/24/2007, -0/+6Necessity is the mother of all inventions.
The need for a way to dodge internet piracy-related capture/surveillance is greater now than ever before.
This need is being fueled exactly by those who will benefit the least from the next leap in P2P. - edzilla, on 11/24/2007, -2/+8Mr Sarkozy actually admires Bush, so yeah, the guy IS a moron.
- tnoy, on 11/25/2007, -0/+6"French internet users will face a three strikes and you’re out policy, according to the NY Times. Users will receive a warning for each illegal download before losing their service on the third infringement."
Second paragraph. - noots, on 11/24/2007, -1/+7that's what he said... he likes P2P as a concept, but downloading illegal material via it, is well illegal.
i pirate a lot. People who blindly refuse to admit and take responsibility of what they do are only lying to themselves. - diggeddugg, on 11/24/2007, -1/+6Because it's not in the ISPs interest to share information with the RIAA or equivalent - can you imagine the defection from Comcast if they just decided to offer up your records without court orders?
- juicebag, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5The artists are at their backs? More like the record companies.
- PhonicUK, on 11/25/2007, -0/+5"Users will receive a warning for each illegal download before losing their service on the third infringement."
RTFA - Pyrolistical, on 11/24/2007, -2/+7That's like cutting somebody's hand off for stealing...oh wait..
- naturemade, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5I hate to argue for what is literally "stealing" but the flood gates opened a long time ago and it is way too late to close them now. The massive amount of resources it would take to really do anything about p2p (legal or illegal) is so far beyond what any government/company is going to actually devote to it. The laws are attempts to make the point that if you happen to get caught (which is pretty damn unlikely) there will be at least some penalty...
- breakaway, on 11/25/2007, -0/+4Yep, I'm sure lots of P2P content is legal content.
- mrmworth, on 11/24/2007, -0/+4so does this mean every isp will be duplicating and saving all packets sent over their networks? and they and the government will have access to verify the legality of what you're sending? forget about bye bye piracy, more like bye bye privacy.
- bentrinh, on 11/25/2007, -0/+4RIAA and MPAA: “We run the risk of witnessing a genuine destruction of culture"
Hypocritical, much? - KingBabi, on 11/24/2007, -2/+6Not to be a dick, but French people never say this. It's the equivalent to "Poppycock," really outdated I believe.
- christophelyon, on 11/25/2007, -0/+4It doesn't work like this in France. The vast majority of people use ADSL lines, and all ADSL plans are unlimited in France. Only mobile phone access and some cable ISPs (less and less used) still have limited plans.
- Gir53457, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3I think this is a political debate already if your president is involved.
- websyndicate, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3V FOR VPN is all I gotta say
- edzilla, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3you do realize you are a moron? We are starting to build optical fiber connections in the large cities, and the average connection speed is twice that of the US (14mo vs 6 or 7...)
- arcooke, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3Or they could go the extra mile and deport every citizen because without them, there would be no piracy.
- BigglesPiP, on 11/24/2007, -1/+4Encrypted VPN with a server outside France?
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -1/+4how is this great for pirates? guess who's not moving to france, arrrrrrrrrrrrr
