- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+142I would not pay.
The day twitter starts charging would be the day competitors finally gain an advantage against Twitter.
I wouldn't mind ads, though. They have to make money somehow. - GamingForever, on 11/19/2008, -2/+49I wouldn't even pay a penny.
- wiggles, on 11/19/2008, -1/+30I don't use Twitter.
I have an account, but I've never really found a use for it. I am not so dense to miss the fact that countless others use it, and use it very often. The puzzle, however still remains. I would therefore love to see responses in this thread to the following question:
How and why do you use Twitter? - t4stringer, on 11/20/2008, -0/+26no way, i wouldn't pay
- Gemfinder, on 11/19/2008, -7/+30I wouldn't pay $5. Maybe $1/month, they'll attract more bargain-seekers and that would be a fair price. And for Ghod's sake, don't charge per Tweet!
I'd prefer it stay free, though.
And please, no ads! The big reason Firefox is so popular is because you can add AdBlockerPlus and Stylish to it and zap those suckers. No-one likes to see ads. - bromac, on 11/20/2008, -3/+18I never understood Twitter.
It's a single-feature version of Facebook, instant messengers, blogs, mailing lists, SMS text messaging or shared calendars...hell even IRC can give you more functionality than that "service". It's a regression of the internet.
And they want to CHARGE for it? That just confirms my suspicions...most Twitters are twits. - nahsrocketeer75, on 11/19/2008, -2/+17I'd pay, but I don't for a minute believe that half would. There might even be a side benefit of weeding out the riff-raff, scammers and spammers. (Full disclosure in order: My employer would pick up the tab.)
- doiveo, on 11/19/2008, -0/+15I wouldn't pay as is and the ads would have to be web only. The day I get an unsolicited ad on my cell phone is the day my twitter account dies.
I like the Stumbleupon module instead. Pay $ to become a sponsor and advanced user. Each of your tweets has a sponsor graphic or color. Peer pressure becomes a silent seller for the service. Advanced users could get unlimited tweets and regular users only get 30 or so. - kevin52094, on 11/19/2008, -1/+12Sometimes i turn off adblocker just to see what ads im missing. Shhh! dont tell anyone
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -3/+14The day any free service converts to pay, I stop using it.
- manzplan, on 11/20/2008, -4/+15I dont use it now.. so I probably wouldnt pay to use it later
- jfdolier, on 11/19/2008, -4/+13Simple. Make it free for all, up to a certain number of Tweets. Subscribe for unlimited. Problem solved.
- lemur, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9You mean pay to use a ridiculously simple service that was designed so poorly that most of its features don't work? Pay to use a crippled proprietary system owned by a company who can't fix it? Laconica is everything that Twitter will never be! LACONICA FOR LIFE
Check it in action at http://identi.ca/ - modgirl17, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7I like the idea of charging corporate accounts!
I don't tweet that often...so I'd probably drop my account if they start charging -_- - desqjockey, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8when substitute goods are free (facebook status updates could easily fill that niche) you cant charge.
sorry to suck the air right out that trial balloon - warpzero, on 11/20/2008, -2/+9I came in here to post the same thing. I've signed up to Twitter, but it seems completely useless to me. I figured it was some service for teenage kids to gossip on, but it seems (from reading these blogs) that adults use this service too. Uh ... what the hell for?
- jeremyduffy, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8So.... People will be pay money to be their own stalkers?
"ding! I'm in the Starbucks on 4th street" "ding! I'm in the bathroom" "ding! I just laid a duece!" - KSUdesigner, on 11/20/2008, -2/+8Tomorrow morning wouldn't suck so bad if you didn't get sloshed in the middle of the week.
- cliffyboro, on 11/20/2008, -2/+7I wouldn't use Twitter for free, never mind pay to use it.
- baldboy7, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Just dont tell Twitter.
- fightline, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6I tried user Twitter, but I just couldn't get into a routine where I constantly used it in my life. I found no use for it. I wouldn't use Twitter even if they paid me $5 a month.
- cshontz, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5LOL No.
- autoy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4I use it for what it's best for: microbloging. I have no time or need to mantain a proper blog, so I just post what draws my attention in either Twitter or Tumblr. It's very easy to keep updated or even post pics on the go using any of the myriad of iPhone clients. In the case of Twinkle iPhone client I can also see nearby tweets using GPS, that's how I've met some people in real life too, it's really fun. I also follow people who do the same kind of posting I do and put stuff that's relevant to me. I will never in my life follow someone who constantly posts stuff like "eating a pizza", "raining now" and so on.
It's a somewhat difficult social network to "get" but I find this is better as it keeps it out of the mainstream. - 1310nm, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4You kids quit twittering on your myspacebook and come finish your math homework!
- scabbers, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't use that ***** for free.
- RegalBegal, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3If they charge then we can take that user list and sell it to people who need folks who'll pay for just about anything 'cutting edge' and 'cool'.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Pay for TWITTER? Are they out of their minds? That survey was either more than a little 'unscientific' or ppl on the internet have deeper social problems than once believed.
- maxlightz, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3i got my close group of friends into it - girlfriend and 2 close buddies - great tool for staying in touch with your closest friends without having to call each other all the time. mom also follows me so she stays updated without calling me every day. lastly the twitter app on facebook can be toggled to make your twitters automatically become your facebook status. the ripple effect is that everytime i twitter all my facebook friends can see it also. the best thing really though is that anyone with any kind of cell phone can twitter so it's all inclusive. i know the facebook app on iphone lets you update your fb status or if you have mobile internet on a regular cell phone (which sucks) you can facebook mobile site - still too restricted in my opinion.
my best advice is setup twitter to your phone, twitter out twice a day ... then as you re-encounter your friends get them to follow you and setup their phones to receive your twitters to their mobile as txt msgs ... as they see your incoming twitters on their cell phones they will catch on and start twittering out themselves - junkstore, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I wouldn't pay and I'm a fairly heavy user. I imagine that if it went pay-only then they would lose a fairly large percentage of their user base.
The alternative of course is advertising which is fine as long as it's not overly intrusive. I'm sure a combination of Firefox add-ons / Greasemonkey scripts will make it bearable. - killdashnine, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Unscientific or no, consider the market demo ... young people who are used to free internet applications. Fail.
- daridave, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Nobody would. This is the kind of survey where people say "yes" because they want to sound right [aka not cheap]... but half of them wouldn't really do it. Come on, get real!
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3I always got the impression that the Digg community was fairly anti-twitter.
- Mjeacoma, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Perhaps Twitter should sell a $.99 twitter app to make some money - I for one would stop twittering the moment they said it was a subscription service.....I know money needs to be made but the service is not 'needed'
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -3/+6ive researched this and researched it again but i still dont know what the ***** this twitter ***** actually is. what does it do? and why the hell do dniggers keep harping on about it like its the next jesus?
- Elranzer, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4The best apps are the ones that do a dozen things well.
- amsoell, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3junkstore has it right. Also, by and large, Twitter status updates are public and anyone can reply to them, not just your list of approved friends. You can search through the public timeline on Twitter and see what people are talking about and respond. A lot of people use it to expand their professional network in their local area.
- Finalreminder, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3If Digg started charging I'd have never have joined. Not because Digg is bad but because they charge.
If they gave me a free trial I wouldn't join, because I'd know I'd have to end up paying.
So if Twitter charge then they may keep the old faithful, but their new user uptake would slow considerably.
Ergo = Bad idea. - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3I use Twitter to keep in contact with all the people that live near me and have the same interests. By only following locally I have got involved in several user groups, been to three or four dinners and generated several links that have resulted in work. It only become useful when you have a few dozen people that you actually have some chance of seeing in real life. Once you get to that point you can do things like tweet "I'm going to be in town in half an hour, anyone want to grab a coffee" and get two or three people who you can meet up with. It's a great social networking tool because it works best when you don't use it as the sole way of communicating with your social network.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I'd consider using Twitter if they payed me.
- mwilhelm, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3agreed. I'm not going to shell out any $$ to spy on my friends.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2I'm having a hard time justifying using it for free. Paying for it would be like paying to clean my own windshield. Not gonna happen.
- cparker, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2How exactly do you recommend Twitter stays afloat, if they don't charge AND don't introduce ads?
- thescimitar, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2I use it to reach a network of people easily for broad questions that are not urgent. In my experience, if you have a high volume of communication, and have a low priority issue that you address in email, it gets completely forgotten. Twitter is great for these sorts of low-priority things.
So, for example, I had some questions around high-level demographic analysis that weren't pressing and wouldn't matter if they got missed, but information I still would rather have than not have. I didn't have the specific language to go google, so that wasn't an option, and I didn't want to spend the research time anyway. I didn't have anyone immediately on hand in the company to whom I could go to, because I was too busy to get dragged into some long discussion. So I tweet to tap a broad knowledge base, keep my own time commitment low, and get an answer (presumably) from someone who knows what they're talking about (presumably). - JudgeMonkey, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Hello hyperbole.
- Matt2k, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2It's for people who aren't busy all the time, and have lots of friends, or really like the idea of being in a 24/7 meeting with their coworkers. The messages can come to your cell phone, so it's kind of like group text messaging.
I personally am not interested in the service either. It's one of those things where you pretty much either love it or are completely disinterested. - eklem, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3You actually pay for Twitter-clients?
- Narcowski, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Why would you pirate something like that when AdBlock+ works so much better?
- amishjim, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2pay for twitter? lol hardly. . .
- mufffin, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2It's retarded enough already as it is, no need to drive it deeper into the ground.
- maxlightz, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2if i had to pay i would quit. i really like twitter but it's not worth my money. i'm happy to participate and would not be bothered by ads *so long as they are not cumbersome of interfere with the simplicity of the function*
