Use C much? - z00k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kind of off subject, but not really at all... (Sort of)

But yeah ... kind of strange offer, and what about the virus infestations... there are hundreds upon millions... probably billions... Of virus's... Snap.
-Zook - fiorenza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From the story description:
"The company has partnered with Warranty Corporation of America (WaCA) to offer cash benefits if users of its software are victims of identity theft or virus infestations."
Warranty coverage, basically. - ScottyMo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Comment dugg+ for concept, but I can't help but frown upon the variable assignment within the if statement.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3so if you were baited by a phishing scam, does this count?
i get plenty of these emails a day.. all it takes is to fill one in properly and collect warranty - bugninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't think he does or he'd use one '=' Otherwise, this is technically a question.
If (Identity theft == cash in your pocket) { well then...what? } - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2justice7: I doubt their plan is to be able to reinburse you 100% in such case. Plus you are just retarded if you want to do that. Its not like they are going to give you more money then you had in your account. Then you have to go through the effort of cancelling the cards and contacting the bank etc. Sorry buddy just not worth. The more interesting thing is I thought that banks were sort of doing some of this already. I guess more help can't hurt.
- spiffyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They aren't saying they're going to pay you $5,000 if you become a victim of identity theft.
This is a standard identity theft "insurance" policy that only reimburses for "lost wages, legal fees, re-filing applications and fixing credit reports." So if you have to miss work in order to call a credit card or mortgage company or meet with your attorney than they will reimburse you for that.
This shouldn't be a big selling point. It sounds great. It's not really. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They will probably not honor their warranty, and pull the same stuff that the insurance companies do now with stolen cars equipped with immobilizer systems.
"We don't believe you, because our virus scanner is infallible!" - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's funny how this is now released, given that the track record of security improvements over the last 2-3 years, and given the fact that a lot of protection has come out of XP SP2 - the risk is much lower, and makes perfect sense now. It's like car insurance companies now covering you for spring pricks in your ass due to seat cusion failure. I know I'm not alone when I say this, but I've not had a virus infect my machine in over 7 years now, maybe I'm the minority, maybe not.
- Auxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but how the hell are you going to prove you're identity to collect the bloody guarantee. SCAM! :-D
- warbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get a virus, earn cash! Another win for windows. Linux is going down!
Yeah, and this is a joke btw (and i didnt rtfa) - Auxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spankenstien: What?
== is evaluation, = is assignment, so how did the poster mix them up? - Spankenstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's amazing how common the "==" thing is. Modded down because the poster doesn't know the difference between assignment and evaluation.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A new way to commit insurance fraud!
- us3ecandme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I pass the CA Headquarters every day coming home. Anybody want video of it crushing under the weight of this promise?
- quakeIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry about that. Assume the variables were already delcared and change to:
if ((TheftID == 1) && (IdentityTheft == cashInYourPocket)) //Oh no! identity theft!
return money; //yay for $$
or something like that. Someone should make an entire class... - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's nothing but a scam.
- stanleypane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds great? The digg headline reads:
"identitfy theft == cash in your pocket"
Doesn't sound great to me. Cash in my pocket doesn't fix a broken credit record. It doesn't help me get a loan when I'm denied because of fraudulent activity under my name.
Their plan, however, does seek to put the money where it needs to go: towards fixing the problem. Now if we could get a guarantee that they would aid (better yet, take full control) in handling all procedures needed to rectify the situation, I'd be more apt to subscribe to the insurance. In fact, it should be their responsibility to fix it from start-to-finish.
The headline on digg translates to: "Oh... you're identity was stolen? Here's some cash, now get lost and quit perstering us!" Not an accurate blurb... at all. - gwalbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You forgot to declare and define cashInYourPocket and money.
:P - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0111
- w9thwonder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1And who is going to bankroll this idea?
