- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32I'm holding out for The Matrix.
- Settra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I'm holding out to touch a real girl.
- Koray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Imagine an LCD or Plasma that actually has amazing blacks, the viewing angle of a CRT, no burn in worries, and virtually no artifacting. And an amazing picture to boot. There is an individual emitter for every color, for every pixel. Anyone at CES can attest that the image was amazingly crisp and vibrant.
I'm sad to see yet another SED delay. - HCviolence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I'm holding out for a holodeck. And virtual 3d Macgyver.
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20I'm holding out for the laser TVs. :)
- aaronmarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The hard part though is knowing that they have actually produced working prototypes of these SED panels. Every person that has had the chance to see one has said that they were just floored by the quality and that it is truly the next-generation display.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I love having all the annoying Best Buy tv guys swarm around me only to flee when I ask when they'll be getting SED.
- DeathJux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Could you imagine getting upgrades, though? When the next generation of chip came out that had all the features you were wanting? That would suck.

- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6From Wikipedia:
Advantages
* Exceptional 50,000:1 contrast ratio (dark room only). According to IGN at the 2006 CES show Toshiba's final versions of SEDs will ship with a contrast ratio of 100,000:1.
* Exceptional 1ms response time.
* Brightness of 450 cd/m2.[3].
* 180 degree viewing angle.
Drawbacks
* Not enough reliable information is yet available about this technology. However, as this technology matures further advances no doubt will be explained.
* Pricing is unknown although, "Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai says he wants to offer the screens for about the same price as LCD and plasma TVs of comparable size."[4]
* As with any phosphor-based technology, SED may also be susceptible to screen burn-in. This was a constant problem for people using CRT television monitors for security camera systems. Early plasmas also had this issue, but with phosphor development, the issue has largely been reduced.
* Patent [5] lawsuit [6] with US company Nano-Proprietary, Inc. (NASDAQ: NNPP).[7] - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I have a 27" POS TV from 1992. It shows a little green in the upper left and yellow in the lower left. Weighs a ton and a half and has only one speaker. It's also not cable ready - I have to run the cable signal through my VCR (its only use).

- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5>> Imagine an LCD or Plasma...
Not to mention accurate color reproduction all around. No blue tint and weak reds from crappy LCD displays. And just think, it won't be long before you have these puppies sitting on your desk instead of an LCD. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5>> Within the next few years the energy savings and increased manufacturing efficiency will make an LCD a better buy.
Toshiba is hyping SED by saying that it will use considerably less energy than even LCD. I say it's worth the wait. - Kamael, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7In soviet russia the tv holds out for you
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Did somebody say tubes?
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4LCD and Plasma are "cheap". Only problem is that they will never reproduce black levels as well as any CRT-like technology like SED.
When you are spending lots of money on an HDTV, you want the best. LCD and plasma only offer an affordable middle-ground. - Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's a good thing you're not holding out for the real Angelina Jolie.
- Koray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+350,000:1? Toshiba and Canon have claimed that when they have a final commercial product, it will be 100,000:1. Makes me want to cry.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LCDs are now Dirty Chip. I just saw a 42 inch LCD for about a grand at Best Buy.
Prices have gone down a lot.
If you take the price of the first TV marketed, ad inflation and Cost of Living, the prices are about the same as am LCD TV - ferrell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm holding out for a holodeck. And virtual 3d Angelina Jolie.
- blindguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3More choices makes the prices lower on all different types, the more the better!

(Aka, I'm holding out on holding out) - cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With a name like Nano-Proprietary Inc, you know their an honest bunch.
- mercatfat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Speaking as a Best Buy employee who is not a total retard, I'm more than happy to answer. As you may or may not know, our discount is store cost plus 5%. Depending on the brand, the markup is around 33% on average. In any case, it is almost approximate double the markup of things such as cameras, but not the basically non-profit items such as iPods and laptops.
It is not, however, as much as our markup on AV/Computer cables, which is almost 90%. In case you didn't know, Monster Cables that typically sell for $99 are bought for approximately $8 by retailers. I'm not kidding. Firewire cables that we sell for $35 cost employees about $4.
Knowing is half the battle. - dickybrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2poorly written??? otherwise, your guess is as good as mine

So considering Laser TVs are expected to come out around the same time and it has been said they will "be half the weight and cost of Plasma or LCD displays", then I'm thinking SEDs are beat before they even get out the door.

I hope that you are correct on laser, but I'm not counting on it. A lot of the word on laser TV came from the publicity campaign of a company that was filing for its IPO. There have been some questions raised about the credibility of the company. See:

http://tinyurl.com/ykof7h - Halbyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OLED is in use currently, but only in small-format monochrome screens, like several of the old iRiver flash mp3 players, and a couple of point-and-shoot cameras. It produces nice, self-lit images, but it turns out to scale up badly, with the one OLED TV proof-of-concept unit I saw lasting less than six months.
SED shows much more promise, with even the rough prototype units outperforming the best plasma and LCD have to offer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i read a story on avs that SED will first be available for commercial installations, and wont be produced for us until the LCD demand dies and manufacturing costs lessen. all of this sucks, because 50,000:1 contrast ratios and true colors is what i want. i dont want to spend 2 to 3k on a plasma, lcd, or dlp when the true HD display is released a few years later.
edit: haha glooper nice.
alexsk8, nope. not at first. maybe 5 years after release. - wordfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What the hell is pro-longing?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm... not going to make a holding out joke.
- DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Imagine a having a the amazing picture of a plasma or LCD display with NONE of the inherent problems that go with those technologies.
Blacks are truly black. Colors are incredibly vibrant. And there's no motion blurring whatsoever.
Forbid you do your own research.....gotta wait for people to spoonfeed you. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well once they get the science and manufacturing down they would end up being very cheap, VERY cheap. it will take quite awhile to get there though. i cant wait. SED is now technology, OLED is still 5-10 years off i would bet
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whatever happened to OLED?
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would point to the Wikipedia article that states that they are susceptible to burn-in, but I wrote that part, so it's not really fair.
- Crasoum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm holding out to see if it blends.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I'm thinking SEDs are beat before they even get out the door."
You never know what is actually going to happen until things actually get out the door. When I first heard about SED sets a few years ago they were supposed to eventually be about half the cost of Plasmas and LCDs as well. Of course plasmas and LCDs are already half the cost they were when they said that, so who knows.
My money will go to the first person to make a 60"+ TV that meets my standards for about $1,000. Until then it's all hot air to me. -
