- d00by, on 10/12/2007, -10/+124Didn't Steve Jobs admit earlier that he didnt like the ads himself cause he thought the Mac guy was a little too pompus?
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -10/+95"those mac commercials suck."
I don't know about that, but I know they really don't do anything to make me want to get a Mac. - dtd00d, on 10/12/2007, -8/+86Anything with John Hodgman is pure genius.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+95d00by: EVERY "mac guy" is a little too pompous. This behavior is inherent to Apple consumers...
- Aiwanei, on 10/12/2007, -18/+84Those mac commercials are some of the best ads for a PC that I have ever seen. PC is very likeable and seems to be able to do things normal people want to do. While Mac is pompous and inconsiderate, to PC's feelings and only seems to care about all the "awesome" media things that he can do in seconds that a PC can't.
On a side note, I never understood the argument by Mac owners that now with parallels and Boot Camp that they can run windows too. Why brag about being able to run Windwos to a windows user. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -0/+65Gates is a hero to millions of poor and sick around the world.
The Digg stamp of approval is something I'm sure ranks well down the list of things he's cares about. - CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -23/+83Yeah, that Mac guy is a prick, and even though John Hodgman is a genius (see the wired issue with him on the cover), those mac commercials suck.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42"Didn't Steve Jobs admit earlier that he didnt like the ads himself cause he thought the Mac guy was a little too pompus?"
If Jobs didn't like the ads, they wouldn't be airing - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35you're a moron
Jon Stewart said it on the Daily Show. how the ***** is that a rumor? - etnu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Correction: Hodgman is the senior genius correspondent.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31It's a trap!
- Cerpin_Taxt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26He is definitely awkward, but he can poke fun at himself. (see the napoleon dynamite skit)
Cut him a break, will you? - acff, on 10/12/2007, -11/+34those commercials really turn me off to the mac. i know i'll never own one, but the mac guy comes off as an elitist hipster who tries too hard to look like he doesn't try.
if i didn't have to use macs for school, i never would - leeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23He's got a knife!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25i find it funny that in Apple commercial PC guy suppose to be dumb and boring, yet we all know John Hodgman to be smart, articulate, and incredibly funny. And we all know Justin Long AKA Mac guy as the stupid white dude who crawed into the hole in Jeepers Creepers.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Actually he does.
Anyone who has seen the Napoleon Dynamite clip he did with the actor from the movie knows that he has to have a sense of humor. Microsoft in general might not have a sense of humor, but that's because they're a big corporation that is "emotionally detached," but Bill Gates, and most of the employees in general do have a sense of humor.
EDIT: Gah, somebody beat me to it... - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -17/+33O RLY?
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Then it gets put in the Mac, and it can't be played at all, and the same happens for Blu-Ray, and then it's revealed that there's DRM on DVDs as well, so more security guards come on to them both when they're watching a DVD?
Sounds like a good ad. - tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13He's wearing a wire!
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Scott, you messed up the thread. :(
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8how can it be old news if it comes out before the news happens?
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think it's more that... well, he's a bit more geekish than most people you see on TV and such. He'd prefer to be sitting at a table, or whatever, with just a few people - Rather than having millions of people staring at him while he's trying to have a conversation.
I could be wrong though! - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10XP still bluescreens, I've had it happen at work.
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It isn't just Microsoft, you realise?
HDCP is *****, yes, but please, don't try to pin the blame on Microsoft. They're supporting the DRM, simply because if they didn't when people DID buy HD-DVDs or Blu-Rays, they'd be pissed they couldn't play them easily. - ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9From what I've seen, those Mac commercials are all very jaded and speak half truths constantly. It actually pushes me away from the whole apple thing. Don't try to sell your product by lying about another. The only people that follow that are the born followers of which there are so many, but you'll never get the core.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's not a rumor!
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16My idea of a Mac commercial:
Typical intro's...then PC guy says, "Uhoh...someone just loaded an HDDVD into me!" I cage comes down from the ceiling and security guards come and handcuff him.
Mac guys asks, "What's going on?"
PC Guy says, "Oh it's okay. This is the new AACS DRM! It just makes sure they watch this content and don't attempt to save it or anything." - jtherrien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Well, actually... they're all PCs. They're all personal computers, no one can deny it. An Apple PC is like a Dell PC is like an HP PC is like a.... etc.... except the Apple PC comes with a different OS and a more controlled environment.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I think justin long does a fantastic job playing as himself in those mac ads, that prick.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Yeah, because i only want to use one single app at a time. Learn to use a computer properly and you wouldn't need a full screen button."
This is a fundamental division between computer users. Unless I'm using calculator, notepad, winamp, or shuffling some files, I want my OS to get the hell out of my way and let me concentrate on the program that's running. Unless I'm dragging files, I much prefer the "tabbing" that the windows taskbar provides. If I'm looking at a spreadsheet, I want to see all of the spreadsheet. If I'm working in photoshop, I'M WORKING IN PHOTOSHOP, not wasting pixels to show my desktop image. - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow your brain vomited all over digg, that's incredible.
- kevxross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, that makes it hilarious that he's in Mac ads making fun of PCs...
- Snoz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9http://www.engadget.com/media/2007/01/bill-vs-hodgman-joke-image.jpg
Rofl! - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The ads aren't for people who figured that out...
- synae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6There's RSOD in XP also. Few people are unlucky enough to get it -- somehow I'm one of them.
- Aiwanei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5kevxross, the problem is those ads don't really make fun of PC's, it actually makes more fun of the "elitist" mac user then anything else. While their intention is to make fun of PC's, it definately does not deliver in most of them.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -21/+25YA RLY
- 405994, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's made of people!
- Blackforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Seemed like the best clip for Napolean Dynamite Bill Gates
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YktZkyx4wtM
I just wish I could find a clip of the Tommy Boy spoof with Bill Gates Steve Ballmer from an Exchange conference a few years back. It was pretty funny too. - qcfb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"YA WAI!"
Yahweh. fixed it. - billd222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bill Gates is going to pull out a ray-gun and DISINTEGRATE John Hodgman.
- dkarlson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dorothy Mantooth is a saint!
- Aiwanei, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9@HungSquirrel See that arguement doesn't fly with me because a "windows" pc can run linux/unix and even Mac OSX now (though a bit on the side of illegal to do so.) So saying it is a better because it can run many OSes for a similar price is not really valid.
- JasonMaloney101, on 10/12/2007, -20/+23NO WAI
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I really wish every mac user would stop trying to convert me. Stop, for *****'s sake. I like my PC. There, i said it. Windows is fine.
ABKDSFAfasdF! - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is still incorrect for the ads to say that my ordinary "PC" hardware, my video card, memory, motherboard, and processor, can catch viruses and crash. Neither "PC" nor "Mac" hardware can exclusively run just one operating system. Put Windows on a "Mac", and you still have a Wintel.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The Jedi are still the best. And they don't get viruses".
Well put John, and damn funny. :-) - Aiwanei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3See I don't see how he can be criticized for straying for the issues. He is a comedian and that is it! He talks about what works best with the guest and what will be the most entertaining, not what will be the most hard-hitting and politically focused segment.
- icedevil6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just recently he had Jerry Rice on the Daily Show and spoke nothing of politics during the that segment. Stewart is often criticized for straying from the issues, not confining his show to them.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Why brag about being able to run Windwos to a windows user."
Because you can have your Mac and eat it too. It is much easier to run Windows on a Mac than the other way around. And of course Mac users have to be pompous – we're an embattled minority! -
