- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you have no friends in the tech area because you are an ass with no friends at all. it has nothing to do with nerds or tech.
- Butros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This dude got positive diggs for that comment? Bad digg community, BAD!
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You should take the tests. At the very least take the A+ test. I didn't even study for that one. A co-worker was studying and bouncing questions off me before taking the test. I looked at the practice questions and figured, what the heck, the company is going to pay for the test voucher. It took about 10 minutes on the adaptive test (each test) and I was certified.
Even though experience should speak volumes... There's always some HR department that believes that "real" techs are certified. Go figure. So that cert that will hang on the wall until you get tired of seeing it may give you that extra little "push" if you need to look for work again. - mgainor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I don't have that piece of paper and I make six figures. This field is all about what you can do, not about artificial things like a degree that anyone can get if they pay for it. Tech companies need results from their people in order to survive, that's all that matters.
- otomo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I don't think people are bragging, this was a question looking for answers. Most of the geeks I work with don't even talk about salary. Outside of saying the other person makes too much (we joke about ability a bunch).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I suck 9.50 hour CANADIAN SHIIIIT DIG ME DOWN PLEASE
- nighthwk1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, this country was built on the backs of many more than just African slaves, even in the south. Indentured servants and the rest of the lower class really didn't have it much better than the slaves. It continued like this until the middle class eventually emerged as the majority in the 20th century, though many were still stuck in a life of providing cheap manual labor.
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6After looking through all those figures there a couple things I find interesting...
-Most responders are software engineers with 10 years or less experience.
-Responders with considerable experience (15-20+ years) aren't much more than the 7-10 year set.
-The best salaries all seem to come from startups, government contracts and the oil industry?
Here are my stats...
Experience: 9 years
Education: None
Certs: None
Company: Public
Job Description: Network Engineer
Location: Washington D.C.
Salary: 65K
Age: 27
Other: Pension.
All in all, it looks like everyone is getting paid very well. I feel I've been underpaid my entire career, however I am making more money than I ever expected I would. I feel my salary has lagged behind for the following reasons in order or relevance...
1.) No degree.
It's a hell of a lot easier to be successful in IT without a degree than probably any other white collar job in the world but, having one seems to be good for an extra 10-20% in your salary off the bat.
2.) Working public sector instead of private.
I left a private sector job to take my current position. I didn't take a pay cut outright but I did lose a standard bonus and increase far above what the public sector offers. Had I stayed, my base salary would probably be 7-10K higher by now with another 10% or so paid in bonuses.
3.) Working hardware and systems instead of software development.
Plain and simple. Developers get paid more than support. In a software development company this is obvious and understandable, elsewhere it's same but shouldn't be. I believe a proper analysis of the true value of each role to the company would reverse the standings.
4.) Black.
I'm sure someone will take offense to this and tell me I'm lazy or making excuses and wittily point out that "That's the reason you aren't where you want to be!" but...I'm an objective guy and my experience is clear on this subject. Color is definitely a factor, moreso in how far you can go with a given company or position than whether or not you get hired in the first place.
5.) Accepting a low initial salary with the expectation of advancing.
This ties in with #4. Up until 3 years ago I kept believing that I could take a below average offer for a job I really wanted to do and I'd be able to make up the difference once I proved myself. I've finally learned that it's better to get it all up front just a little too late. - kenplaysviola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5True, but the cost of living in Fresno is a lot cheaper. $42k can actually get you a house!
- bjsiders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My plumber makes $85K/year. IT pays in-line with any other form of skilled labor that requires specific training but no particular education.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Err...I'm confused. You posted info that I knowingly have in my public Digg profile...my real first name and my website. What exactly does that prove?
- lazyron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5dugg. but depressing for me. 7+ years web dev and a couple years IT, and making less than half of what i made back in the dotcom years. made a few decisions for fun instead of career and basically had to start over. not to mention the bubble bursting :P
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Butros brought a good point...I should add I have probably the highest living expenses out of most people on here living in NYC. My rent is more than each paycheck. Yah. Sucks.

Title: Elctronic Computer Technician
Location: South Florida, Usa
Age: 23
Salary: $41k + Full benefits - ClassicJBC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm sure most of these are honest salaries, but depending on your market, don't expect to do so well. If you're not in a major tech market (e.g., SoCal, NY, Atlanta, etc.) or high cost-of-living area, you're probably not going to do as well on average. I'm a web developer with 4 years experience doing around $30k in a southern college town.
- biometricks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Experience: 4 years
Education: AS (2year degree plus some additional credits)

Title: Network Admin

Salary: $50,000 full benefits (about a $15,000 package)
Considering that I took the job at $29,000 four years ago, my current salary isn't too bad. -
