- Murderousfox, on 03/31/2008, -0/+33Looks like I might be looking for a new ISP soon.
- troydoogle7, on 03/31/2008, -0/+33Should read ISP voluntarily disconnects itself from customers payments.... plans to go down in flames...
- borez, on 03/31/2008, -1/+31Because a 40mb internet connection is superb for email
/sarc - homesickalien, on 03/31/2008, -1/+21The industry is retarded. They should all just ***** off and die. Even if they managed to completely stop all bittorrent filesharing, someone will come up with a new distribution method the next day. It's time for the labels and ISP's to team up and offer unlimited access to high quality music for a reasonable monthly fee...or die.
- jcannonb, on 03/31/2008, -1/+21I prefer USENET anyway. Far and away USENET is significantly faster for me than any torrent ever has been, even before my ISP started throttling. I wish Linux distro's would upload their ISO distribition ISOs to the USENET. I think it would make adoption much faster.
- fredkreuger, on 03/31/2008, -2/+19There's no such thing as usenet.
- troydoogle7, on 03/31/2008, -0/+16Good places to go for your broadband for all you virgin leavers: www.bethere.co.uk (up to 24 meg connection) cost 18 quid or 14 quid permonth depends on speed (free router) ukonline.net or if you are looking for free internet move to sky broadband and get your sky1 back.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -0/+147 days retention (and that on "important" groups)? That really really sucks. You're better off buying premium usenet server access.
- n0c0ntr0l, on 03/31/2008, -2/+14I'm switching isp... immediately.
I own a private tracker, I have gotta change right now, any suggestions? - troydoogle7, on 03/31/2008, -0/+11no please don't go to bulldog broadband... They are horrible.
- harrisbradley, on 03/31/2008, -2/+12Who can honestly turn down quality free usen
- TheGuruStud, on 03/31/2008, -0/+9That's their loss and problem. Usenet is even more simple than torrents (not to mention fast, etc).
- 15charmaxwtf, on 03/31/2008, -0/+8Some people like to email the latest linux isos to their friends :P
- andrew522, on 03/31/2008, -3/+11you just violated 2 rules 3 times each.
but I do agree. - troydoogle7, on 03/31/2008, -0/+8this is the same isp that charges 25p per minute(premium rate) technical support, you should have moved from them ages ago! Move from them and send the right message. Show them who pays their wages! I am doing it right now...
- andrew522, on 03/31/2008, -6/+13You just violated the first and second rules.
- pinguy, on 03/31/2008, -1/+8I got to do the same,
***** Virgin Media they really know how to loose customers, they haven't even got sky one the only reason I have stayed with them is because of there broadband.
I have heard good things about Bulldog Broadband I am going to look into getting my broadband of them today.
http://www.bulldogbroadband.com - mukestar, on 03/31/2008, -0/+7I'm wondering if virgin are setting up there own usenet servers for this service, because if your connecting to a newserver that your ISP controls it would be so easy to keep logs of activity. Virgin is a record label. Nuff said.
- indiekiduk, on 03/31/2008, -0/+7It says their new usenet service will only be 7 days retention. Useless.
- thesubs, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6***** believable.
I have had nothing but problems with Virginmedia in the past, and will not continue my contract with. - Ac1d, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7Be are pretty good, been with them since December. http://www.bethere.co.uk
Good speeds depending on how close you are to an exchange + line quality, and iirc contract is only something like 3 months. Either that or they need 3 months notice. - krabat, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7And here comes the parade of retards who think Usenet is some kind of ***** secret or something.
- Po0py, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6I'm using virgin right now. They cap my speeds down to 1mb every day at 4pm and don't uncap untill midnight. All because I downloaded 300mb+ after the the 4pm mark. Apparently 300mb means I'm a heavy user.
- SoxFanNH, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5Looks like a lot of people will/should disconnect themselves and find a better ISP...
- Krumm, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5They will probably change their minds when the profits drop.
It's a good idea for those already in Fight Club, but Average Joe who has only got to grips with torrents will have no idea about the alternative they are offering, and will change to the next provider who lets them do what they have been doing for years.
(No rules violated!) - UnWeave, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6I guess that this will actually affect a reasonable proportion of their current client-base. Bye bye profits. Really, Virgin. At least get a good foot-hold on the market before you do ***** like this. You're new 'on the block', and now everyone is pissed at you.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5This makes no sense.
I'm not using either of these -- but what are they stopping by getting rid of the bittorrent and then allowing the same "violations" on UseNet?
This is from the article; "Set to go live during the next few months, and at the behest of the UK music industry, Virgin’s scheme will see them send warning letters out to customers flagged as file-sharers by the BPI. Those who do not heed warnings to stop will see Virgin disconnect them from the internet. The scheme will also be available to movie and TV studios who wish to punish Virgin’s customers."
OK -- I don't see why the customer should be upset at Virgin for this... its basically trying to help the customer out by improved access. They are getting letters from BPI WHEN THEY CATCH YOU. In the US -- you might get hauled into court -- because you get the notice WHEN YOU ARE CAUGHT. Gee, I'd appreciate a warning shot. Virgin is probably doing this, because the Music industry /RIAA is forcing them to. You know all those DMCIA and anti-Terror laws that hit the US and UK that were somehow supposed to protect us and keep companies making money so that WE could get more choice and quality? Right. So, Virgin is doing this because there is evidence, and those laws kind up put them as co-conspirators if they don't do something.
But THEN Virgin puts you on UseNet and you get all that stuff anyway -- that's what doesn't make sense to me. The Media companies are trying to preserve their profits -- so this is kind of the "why does a dog lick himself" inevitable reaction. It seems like Virgin is actually helping the customer, and playing cat-and-mouse with the media industry. Once the Media Industry gets Virgin to do its bidding, it will move on to the next larger company. Do you get how this may be working? Virgin is only doing this because they have fewer lawyers (or is it Barristers in the UK?).
As someone has said before, all that is going to work is a subscription fee and unprotected content. If you look a the TV model right now --- you can get all these channels of junk for a flat rate each month. You can store them all on a DVD. You don't do that too much, because most of it isn't worth a second look and next month, you have new shows to watch. They get more money, than the store that waits to for you to shell out $14 for that new Rihanna CD. You know, the overpriced music that they treat like its Gold and parcel out on some DRM-laden online provider and you might have bought 3 times in different forms. Nice racket, but they are chasing alternative entertainment now.
So you shell out $50 and play a video game -- it has about 10 hours of music on it, which means that you get cheaper music with 3D graphics on a video game than you do from a Music Store -- go figure. They are charging just like a monopoly and engaging in anti-competitive practices and how dare they whine about piracy when most musicians get paid NOTHING for ASCAP. We play music at large events and we pay money to the music industry. They never ask WHAT we play. Otherwise, I'm sure that motown music would get most of the revenue from large events. Can we play "We are the Champions" one more time at an Award Show? Yes, yes we can.
Sorry to rant. But the Music industry is the biggest bunch of talent leaches since the fashion industry got kids to sew garments for 50 cents that they sell for $1200. And every other blogger on the web, knows the solution and yet these idiots in suits try and lobby government to protect their profits and keep everyone using buggy whips. Same as big oil and big pharma. All a bunch of crooks using the government to make them money. Well, that's nothing new.
>> But, I'm not sure about the people pissed off at Virgin for this response -- maybe I don't understand. But it seems to me they are doing their best in a bad situation. Not using their services, however, will send a message tot he Media industry. - Sk8SkaNJ, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5As good as this sounds to the average digg user, it'll probably end up doing more damage to the average user who won't bother to use Usenet.
- screensnot, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4etc. = safe
- jerbaker, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Awesome. Corporate intervention is always so much better.
- dustout, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3if the retention is higher than 100 days then virgin people are getting a sweet deal, otherwize not so much
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4But the Laws are freaking stupid.
- fkr3, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4You're about 14 aren't you.
- mike503, on 03/31/2008, -2/+5don't talk about usenet.
jesus people... usenet has nothing useful (especially illegal) and the service hasn't been cool for years. nobody has any interest in it anymore. get it? move on.
keep playing with your torrents kids. just switch it up with encryption, proxy services, buy a server some place and use that for it, etc.
okay? don't talk about usenet. no more spotlights on usenet. talk about IRC instead. - archer75, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3I use usenet as well. Speeds are amazing and they have everything. Especially when your newsgroup provider has 200 day retention.
- fkr3, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3The only issue there is defining "reasonable". Downloading and listening to the music is not a reasonable payment.
- codefidelity, on 03/31/2008, -3/+5there goes usenet
- Po0py, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2Aye, but they do it regardless if your torrenting or not. For example BBC iPlayer or channel 4's 4 On Demand video service. Just watching one show on one of those players could mean you get your arse capped down to 1mb. A bit unfair, imho. Then there is online gaming. You'd be surprised how much bandwidth an online session on Halo or Team Fortress can take up. Although. 1mb speeds are decent enough for gaming the upload is terrible and the pings are dire. I'm thinking of going back to a decent adsl isp to be honest. These huge cable companies are too flaky when it comes to this kind of thing.
- borez, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2***** damn right mate, I'm on Be and it totally rules.
- fkr3, on 03/31/2008, -3/+5Your material is old and stale. Please discover other new tired-old-jokes to increase your reportoire, like "in soviet russia [noun] [verbs] you".
- 18Zulukiller, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2lol ive just posted the exact same thing on torrentfreak (which lead me to here)
- fkr3, on 03/31/2008, -4/+6It's a pretty broad assumption to make that piracy is the only reason people use the internet. A move like this is only likely to affect a minority of users. Just like fixed position speed camers and red light cameras.
- kevyn, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2I'm with you... which is very sad considering I get 20mb from Virgin...and I don't know of any other companies who can compete with that via cable?
- kevyn, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2I have to say...I have had great service from Virgin - It was NTL who sucked donkey balls
- skidpro, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2yes, that is what I do........torrent before 4pm and after midnight
- NightVortez, on 03/31/2008, -2/+4We're this far down and not one person suggested government intervention, bravo digg.
- screensnot, on 03/31/2008, -0/+27 days is enough for 80%+ of what I d/l. I might drop my premium account (actually it's 2nd tier - 80days unlimited for $15), and go with free one.
They didn't mention if there was a cap on bytes/month. I bet they will have one. - cliffski, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1how about grow up and respect other peoples hard work?
