- Erik1, on 10/22/2009, -1/+32I think people are starting to abuse the term "Infographic." It should contain images that are relevant to the topic and have a structure that makes it easy to read and pleasing to the eye... This just looks like a crappy powerpoint presentation. Interesting content (even though it is hard to read).
- jimfeet, on 10/23/2009, -0/+16I'm sorry but this doesn't qualify as a "beautiful inforgraphic" by any stretch of the imagination. The use of every font and font style imaginable is hardly beautiful. Using colors and lines that connect boxes for no apparent reason other than decorative doesn't make the information any more usable.
And it would nice if they at least used proper English ("How much does US Data Centers Use?" and "... is 40 times more energy intenisive <sic> than a convention office building.")
For an infographic, it's possibly the worst I've ever seen. - trisweb, on 10/23/2009, -2/+18Full image... took me forever to find:
http://www.americainfra.com/media/media-news/infog ... - dfross, on 10/23/2009, -0/+13So $7 billion a year, for the WHOLE internet.
That's like $1 per person. That's really not that bad! - eocarroll, on 10/22/2009, -1/+14I don't know why, but I get a warm feeling knowing that there exists a magazine called "US Infrastructure."
- densetsu23, on 10/22/2009, -0/+12I'd suspect other things, like air conditioning, also take up a lot of power. Multiple servers in a crowded room make a lot of heat, something's got to cool the room down.
There's more to a data center than just servers. - AmyVernon, on 10/22/2009, -1/+12A "warm feeling"? Is that what kids are calling it these days?
- undervalued, on 10/23/2009, -0/+10I'm going to guess somewhere between ***** loads and ***** tons.
- Wonderama, on 10/23/2009, -0/+9The efficiencies of an Internet economy far outweigh the alternatives of reduced productivity, increased commutation costs, driving & freight transportation, etc. We should certainly try to increase electrical consumption efficiencies but we're far better off (and "greener") because of the Internet.
- ghouze, on 10/23/2009, -0/+8INFO-CRAPIC -- and not even a very good one
- namslam, on 10/22/2009, -3/+11MONEY AIN't A THANG
- HeyBob, on 10/23/2009, -0/+6And still unreadable
- llamasnotsheep, on 10/23/2009, -0/+5Yeah, the information there is interesting, but it's a terrible graphic that doesn't come close to being an "infographic."
- Stevosaurous, on 10/23/2009, -2/+7WORTH IT
- mstrebe, on 10/23/2009, -2/+6Answer: Less electricity than it takes to make an equivalent amount of paper. And a few continents fewer trees.
- Khast, on 10/23/2009, -0/+4They lie! I opened my computer and there is a bunch of pixies chained to the ethernet card.
- LordofShadows, on 10/23/2009, -0/+4Im worried, it's not like computers are going to get any faster, cheaper, and more efficient.
- forcedfx, on 10/23/2009, -2/+6Where's that face palm ASCII when you need it.
- ObeseSnake, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3Not every datacenter in the US is part of the internet. Many companies have only a handful of their servers dedicated to the web with many more for internal and B2B stuff. So counting every datacenter and factoring the energy cost into what the internet uses is just bogus.
- dtele, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3Surfress abused the term "Infographic"!
Last word in the intro ;) - DeadFox1, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3I'm getting sick of these INFOGRAPHICS....
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3Without question the worst infographic I've ever seen.
- elbenja, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3Infographic are suppose to make it more clear... not the opposite
- poppingweasels, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3That's what torrents are for!
- linagee, on 10/23/2009, -1/+3you left the internet running when you left your house! you're wasting it!
- rif42, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2@dfross
Indeed not that much, but it is more like 4 USD per person. As only about 1.7 billion people is connected to Internet. - rif42, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Maybe it should be called an info-collage.
- AnotherDiggGuy, on 10/23/2009, -3/+5The article lost my approval at this point
"energy usage could double again in five years if steps aren't taken to increase efficiency of cooling measures and if older, more power hungry servers aren't ==>swapped out aggressively for new, greener models <==." - turbog20, on 10/23/2009, -1/+3FTA:
"Data centers account for 1.5 percent of all electricity consumption in the U.S., which is more than the combined total used by televisions across the country."
Comparison FAIL. Why don't they compare data centers of internet traffic with data centers of television traffic (much of it is distributed from the SAME data center, BTW) or home computer energy consumption with home television consumption.
They should have completed the formula. Compare the total energy used to produce, distribute and consume television content against the total energy used to produce, distribute and consume internet content.
Attention all news sources: Stop relying on bone headed interns to interpret data and hire actual statisticians. That is all. - CynicalTyler, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2They also abused the word "beautiful".
- CynicalTyler, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Dude, Jenga is 40 times more energy intensive than a convention office building. Imagine an office building hosting a Jenga convention!
- InactiveUser, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2So why are they charging $100 then..fookers!
- steviesteveo, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1"Signs that the material is not for you #1"
- Caergrim, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Indeed! The Internet offers a lot of opportunities for minimizing energy usage across the board.
- steviesteveo, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1On miniature bicycles. The electricity has to be generated somehow.
- Trigonometron, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1http://matrix.wikia.com/index.php?title=Coppertop& ...
- fandyllic, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1A) "Intenisive"? Can someone explain what this word means?
B) "HOW MUCH ENERGY DOES US DATA CENTRES USE?" US <> U.S. In American English it is "centers". Fail.
C) Retarded non-designers who just learned that there are different fonts to use, but obviously never learned THEY DON'T ALL NEED TO BE USED AT ONCE!
D) I guess the electricity magically moves from data centers to end user computers and we don't have to count the energy use to distribute and switch that electricity.
E) We would probably get more electricity using all the white collar drones as Matrix-like batteries rather than let them waste internet usage with porn and social networking. - jerrolds, on 10/23/2009, -1/+2lol wut?
- macmcraeart, on 10/23/2009, -2/+3lol writing boring ***** on dead trees is so 1994.
- HHarrelson, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1...even considering the typos, yup.
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1What about this beautiful line?
"thats more electricity consumed that by the total number of televisions in the US"
Corrections:
1. "thats" to "that's"
2. "that" to "than"
3. remove "by" - zmigliozzi, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1It's so green.
- JumboJ3t, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Buried for not being an infographic.
Useful information? Yes.
Presented in a remotely readable fashion? No. - anexanhume, on 10/23/2009, -1/+2So... this... this is... FOREVER?
- nheron87, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Agreed, this looks like a kid threw up after eating a box of crayons, graphic design fail.
- Surferess, on 10/23/2009, -2/+1VMware could significantly reduce the amount of electricity we are using to run the net. You can replace 10 servers with one server. If a every company did this it would make a big difference.
- mattucee, on 10/23/2009, -2/+0Let's hope the current US Admin reads US Infrastructure!
- JoeF8577, on 10/23/2009, -4/+1dude honestly, I almost just spit my water all over my computer, desk, and unsuspecting co-worker.
You made a funny. - linagee, on 10/23/2009, -6/+2"something's got to cool the room down" <--- why? fiber optic lets us transfer information at the speed of light. and there are plenty of cool places on this planet where data center could be located. (alaska?) all it takes is someone like the government to wire up a few OC-192s to there. (and maybe a nuclear power plant.)
