IFPI Advises Kids to Use LimeWire and Kazaa
torrentfreak.com — Together with the charity Childnet, IFPI recently launched a campaign to educate kids, teachers and parents about the dangers of filesharing. Ironically, the legal alternatives they suggest direct the kids to LimeWire, Kazaa and sites that sell hardcore adult movies.

- AppleGeorge, on 05/11/2008, -5/+143People still use LimeWire and Kazaa?
- mark076h, on 05/11/2008, -22/+46i use LimeWire frequently for single mp3's , do you have a better solution?
- AppleGeorge, on 05/11/2008, -6/+75Yeah, torrent sites. If you're using a client that has been released within the past 2 years, you have an option to select which files to download. Alot safer and a lot better quality, in my opinion. But hey, stick to your LimeWire idea. I'm sure every MP3 you get is completely clean and a perfect V0 or V2.
- mark076h, on 05/11/2008, -20/+1i remember some site that you could use to do this but you still had to start the download of the whole torrent?
- Culyt, on 05/11/2008, -0/+29You don't have to download a whole torrent if your client support individual file selection such as Azureus or Transmission.
- Makaveli604, on 05/11/2008, -1/+18.. no.
just checkmark the files you want to dl in utorrent - StuTheMeatMan, on 05/11/2008, -3/+18Sometimes the albums are zipped, so it doesn't always work.
- compu73rg33k, on 05/11/2008, -1/+11Then download a version of the CD that isn't zipped. And find a way to get invited to a quality torrent site and you won't have to worry about this.
- hermeslyre, on 05/11/2008, -8/+4A private tracker site? Allow me to scoff at that idea, I've used one, the upload quotas can be a bitch to manage. Everyone seed, seed, seeds, so my modest upload speed doesn't even stand a chance. The only way around it is to watch the new torrents closely and download some ***** you don't want that's in a position to net you some equality.
- Fordi, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3I never did understand that. Music, Video and Images are already packed as tightly as they reasonably can be. Why the hell stick them in a zip/rar container? It doesn't hide anything, and it just makes it a pain in the ass to select what you're after or verify that it's actually there.
- arcticblue, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah, bitsoup has an anal rar policy. They want damn near everything rar'd because they say if a piece is bad, you could just go redownload that one piece. Yeah, that was great back in the day of FTP and IRC, but it is completely unnecessary now since bittorrent verifies each segment of a file you are downloading. Unrar-ing Xvids is an annoying waste of time.
- Makaveli604, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1bitsoup is one of the worst private torrent sites i've seen.. I actually deleted it from my favourites.
- Makaveli604, on 05/11/2008, -1/+13zip files have no place in torrents, rar files do for other types of media, but for music even the scene releases v2 rips without compression
- Fordi, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2I will disagree with you there. Software, ISO images, ROMs, eBooks, etc should be compressed. Other media types, it's futile.
- franksmith, on 05/12/2008, -5/+7Thank goodness people are still using Limewire... all the time.
Our Computer stores service department makes a LOT of money cleaning viruses from Limewire users. Did one myself just this past Thursday/Friday. Completely pwnd.
Yeah for Limewire!!! - doshindude, on 05/12/2008, -8/+5Torrents don't work for single songs. It's way too much of a hassle.
- Fordi, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2I guess that's why I use them; I never got the hang of downloading single songs, really. If I think a song is good enough to download, bandwidth has become cheap enough that I feel it's worth it to get the whole disc and check out the remainder.
And if I really like the whole album, and it's priced right, I'll often buy it.

- ronaldst, on 05/11/2008, -10/+5eMule. Much better than Ares and any gnutella clients.
- Mechanicat, on 05/11/2008, -1/+10Emule is slow as hell. Gnutella is much better for small downloads. Just stay the hell away from limewire and use frostwire instead.
- ronaldst, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Open your ports. Large downloads take time but small stuff is almost instant. Plus you get access to a pretty large collection of rare stuff.
IMO gnutella has access to very little. Worse than Ares. - Mechanicat, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2What about those huge queues? Have they disappeared since the last time I used it (about 2 years ago). In my experience emule was good for downloading a large number of big obscure files at the same time. Each file would download slow (yes, i forwarded and opened my ports) as hell but if you had many files downloading then you could get a good cumulative download rate. Other than that emule was a good repository, you could find and get almost anything there if you were patient enough. But if you just quickly want an mp3 I find it hard to recommend it. Shareaza's gone to the dogs so the only decent gnutella client is frostwire now afaik.

- ElBeh, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Woah, I just used the built-in music search and it /does/ provide some free MP3s, which is cool. However, the quality, selection, and reliability does not rival that of Limewire/Frostwire/Torrent sites/ etc.

- Sidzilla, on 05/11/2008, -0/+25I think that Media Sentry is too stupid too figure out a way to track torrent users, so they want everyone on Limewire and KaZaa where they can get nice little screenshots of shared folders and don't actually have to do anything technical to charge the RIAA and MPAA for tracking those gosh darn pirates. They are probably behind all this.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/11/2008, -0/+8The bittorrent protocol and Azureus (Java2) are open source. I would think that making tracking software for Bittorrent would be easier.
The only problem is having to continually download torrent files as everyone isn't on one giant network.
Also remember Aimster? They sued them out of existence for making a protocol that made tracking impossible.- Fordi, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2They also have to rebuild the torrent files and bait people to their tracker.

- consonance, on 05/11/2008, -0/+56People, people, the IFPI actually has a plan here. Just follow me for a minute. Okay, the IFPI actually DOES want kids to use Limewire and Shareaza. Encouraging this trend and increased policing of the used networks will result in the IFPI finding children who have infringed on copyright. Instead of threatening these youngsters and their families with enormous fines a la mafia-style intimidation, the IFPI will graciously allow families to allow their children to participate in "rehabilitation," where the anti-piracy organization will teach kids about the merits of buying media legally.
Instead, the IFPI will test its secret super-soldier serum on these innocents, resulting in giant musclehead mutants akin to the Hulk who are pliable and naive due to their age, so that the IFPI will convince them that society was the cause of their troubles. Finally, the monster children will go on a rampage and ravish the Earth, where the the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, who are actually wizards, will rule us all.- ultrafez, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7What HAVE you been smoking?

what now bitches. - TopSlacker, on 05/11/2008, -0/+16You couldn't make this stuff up...
- ThreeDee912, on 05/11/2008, -0/+12Well, it could be an experiment. The Limewire/Gnutella network is filled with tons of crap. If people actually listen to the IFPI and get a virus, they will probably get frustrated and abandon file sharing altogether.
Or it could be some kind of legal trap, so if someone sues them for some kind of anti-file-sharing thing, they could say "But we DO support safe file-sharing!"
OR it could be easier to track people using Limewire/Kazaa.
Who knows... -_- - summercrush, on 05/11/2008, -3/+13this is how the big companies expose little kids to porn?

- bb112266, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7I do not understand. If it is legal to copy a music on the radio, or a movie/tv show on television, then what is the issue with p2p? Unless they do not sell what they copy, then there should be no problem with p2p, yes?
- Kazanoe, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3I was under the impression that the radio parent companies generally have to buy the right to play the music.
If that's not true, there's still the fact that the Radio and shows and such are good publicity, but you don't get you're personal playlist played. The idea is that in order to listen to what you want to listen to, you have to buy the music for yourself. - eean, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7the radio station has to pay...
- sebby2022, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Well, for that song to be on the network, someone had to pay for it......In theory.......
- HolyChimp, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2It's uploading that they do you for. Distributing copyrighted materials without the original copyright holders consent I believe they call it. As far as I'm aware, no one has actually been fined for downloading content, but with all modern p2p you upload to others while you download.

- Maratanos, on 05/12/2008, -1/+0It could very well be a problem limited to one or more of the regions they group things by. It appears that the author of this article, from the Netherlands, only looked at the "Europe and Africa" section. And it's entirely possible that the other regions have better pickings, and are about as far as anyone high up in the organization actually looked. Now granted, it's still pretty stupid on their part, seeing as how nothing I just said is justification in any way. But it does provide a plausible way for IFPI to not be quite as much of a bunch of total morons as this article might make it seem.
