- Drahkar, on 11/26/2007, -0/+130I wouldn't even pay that. If I wanted to watch a movie with commercials in it, I'd watch them on TV. I buy DVDs specifically for the enjoyment of having the movie to watch whenever I want and to not have to worry about annoying commercial interruptions.
- booyaman1, on 11/26/2007, -2/+109NO!
- duggtodeath, on 11/26/2007, -4/+103***** that, I heard some Pirates from around the Bay have quite a Bit To Rent out.
- thinkingserious, on 11/26/2007, -8/+63If lower meant $1
- chris9902, on 11/26/2007, -3/+57I can't wait them to seamlessly blend this into movie.
"I'll make him an offer he can't refuse... 2 for 1 at Wal-Mart" ... now back to the movie. - EBFoxbat, on 11/26/2007, -2/+45Buried as Inaccurate. Title should read: "IBM Patent Could Cause DVD Sales to Reach Zero"
- epj3, on 11/26/2007, -1/+38And a highschool computer nerd will create a program to copy the DVD without the "word from our sponsor"
Also, hasn't the movie industry been complaining about falling sales, blaming it on p2p? I'm sure another reason to not buy DVD's will help a lot! - inactive, on 11/26/2007, -1/+37product placements are advertisement aren't they? most films feature some kind of product placement, add that to the damned adverts at the start of the dvd that my newer dvd player refuses to skip past (my old one skips them with no bother) and now they've patented a thing that'll let them pause my film for adverts too? its enough to make someone want to pirate films.
i of course do not condone copyright violation whatsoever (looks around suspiciously) - joerod, on 11/26/2007, -0/+34guess who wont be buying dvds anymore
- bemenaker, on 11/26/2007, -2/+34One word:
DIVX (not the codec) - lukasmack, on 11/26/2007, -0/+30This contradicts the whole point of dvds. Ad-free, pauseable, fast forwaradable can you really see anybody buying this?
- grat2001, on 11/26/2007, -0/+29It's bad enough I have previews before the movie now. If they want to include ads then they should stream the movies from their website for free. Otherwise it's bad enough as it is.
- NYC83, on 11/26/2007, -1/+29there is a big difference between this system and product placement
- Pinhedd, on 11/26/2007, -0/+26There's a reason I pirate movies, no ads at the beginning, no annoying FBI warnings (like they can do anything here in Canada anyway), no region locks, no skips due to some jackass using it as a coffee coaster... the list goes on.
- fordicus, on 11/26/2007, -1/+21"A new patent from IBM details a system to make that option a possibility."
patent application != patent - plizard, on 11/26/2007, -0/+20this will only cause piracy to skyrocket even more with the ads removed from dvds
- wild, on 11/26/2007, -3/+20Your local library should already have a DVD section. Try going in one some time. You might learn something. :-)
- slkuhn, on 11/26/2007, -1/+17With so many big name movies integrating advertising, I don't know if this would really be any different. The biggest ones I can think of is Lexus with Minority Report and the Mini in the Italian Job. The advertising is already there, it's just a matter of how intrusive it is to the movie.
- michlibrarian, on 11/26/2007, -0/+16No! It wouldn't be long before they included the ads but didn't drop the price. I have almost stopped going to theaters because of the ads, including the trailers. Why should I pay to watch ads?
- NSMike, on 11/26/2007, -2/+18They won't be cheaper, and this will be required. Mark my words.
- Toloran, on 11/26/2007, -0/+15"Would you buy or rent ad-supported movies if they were priced lower? "
No. Lowering the quality of a product and making it cheaper isn't an increase in value. Especially since they would likely only lower it $1-2. If I wanted ad supported movies, I'd just watch TV. - poidh, on 11/26/2007, -0/+15Here's an idea. Make films available for download legally. No stupid warnings. No stupid adverts. No stupid DRM. Low price. Profit!
- illustrick, on 11/26/2007, -0/+14and yet another reason to pirate movies.
- witebuddha, on 11/26/2007, -0/+14its like these companies are driving people to pirate... I like to buy DVDs... hell this past black friday I picked up over 20 DVDs (they were on sale for $2-$5) a lot of which i had pirated first!!! but this is ridiculous... if this is the new standard then i'm dropping legal practices... who the ***** are they to try and dictate what we do with what we buy?!
- WorkingDead, on 11/26/2007, -0/+14I would rather IBM have the patent on this than just about anyone else. Seriously.
- PleaseJustDie, on 11/26/2007, -0/+14If they are putting adds in it, then the price should be $0. If it was free, then I wouldn't mind putting up with some ads (as long as they are placed at appropriate times between scenes or so instead of cutting into the movie at random and if they aren't too frequent). But if I have to pay for the privilege of watching ads in the content, then no thanks.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+14This is true. IBM has historically patented some technology to make sure it doesn't enter the marketplace. Or, if someone else intends to introduce it their ROI is going to be 20 years by the time they pay the patent usage fees.
- Kyrgizion, on 11/26/2007, -1/+14Product placement, when executed well, is inobtrusive. As in, someone who doesn't already know the brand advertised, wouldn't even notice it was an advertisement at all.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 11/26/2007, -1/+13I can rent movies for $1 at the supermarket and for $1.50 at Burger King. I can also borrow them from the library for free.
- shakin, on 11/26/2007, -0/+12I'm afraid we'll never get the choice and we'll also never see a price reduction. People always assume that just because a company has found another revenue source they will lower their prices to customers. Have customers seen a price reduction since they started putting previews in front of movies? How about when product placement got big? No? Then why do people think that they'll pay less when the movies are interrupted for commercials?
I don't know when... maybe a decade from now or maybe less, but one day we'll have commercials interrupting movies both in the theatre and on DVD (or whatever home format is popular). We will not see a price reduction. - MagicXB, on 11/26/2007, -1/+13One word: Piracy.
- RedHerringHack, on 11/26/2007, -0/+12No. If I pay *any* money, there had better not be *any* commercials. Of course I rip the movie stream from any DVD I buy, now.
- sodoh, on 11/26/2007, -0/+11Yea it is funny how those who don't pay attention to history are doomed to repeat it. The only good thing out of that mess was people got cheap DVD players. :)
This is kind of moot though. The advertising companies have been embedding adverts into movies, TV programs for years. It has been getting progressively worse though.
Some of the worst examples are Heroes season 2, where the Nissan car is written into the script. Seems to have been culled a bit since the writers strike (as they had to rewrite to finish in December). SG-1 last season actually had the Dell XPS have more airtime in some episodes then the main cast.
So it is an interesting patent, but I doubt it is going to go anywhere except maybe for IBM to kill it from other people using it. - Sk8SkaNJ, on 11/26/2007, -1/+12brought to you by Carl's Jr.
- bluesnowmonkey, on 11/26/2007, -3/+14Who cares? I steal all my movies. Fast, easy distribution. No commercials, previews, or FBI warnings. My library is a directory on my hard drive, not a shelf full of DVDs. No scratches or skipping -- ever.
The DVD is dead to me. ***** the MPAA. - 4degrees, on 11/26/2007, -1/+11"in the future everyone eats taco bell"
- bralynn, on 11/26/2007, -0/+10Am I the only one who purposefully closes my eyes/ears/looks away during any sort of invasive commercial (online videos, movie theater commercials)?
I guess it's the principal of the thing. I know it won't really change anything, but it sure does make me feel better to know I didn't just get forced into watching something I didn't want to. - FredFredrickson, on 11/26/2007, -0/+9Sadly, I can see people buying this.
- def1234, on 11/26/2007, -1/+10It's getting more and more like Futurama by the day. Pretty soon they'll be putting ads in our dreams.
- captnkurt, on 11/26/2007, -2/+10Watch Blade 3 to see how Blade 3 can be used to the detriment of the film.
Fixed that for you. - BoneheadFarker, on 11/26/2007, -1/+9At least the Mini had an integral part in the plot of both "Italian Job" movies. And the original was probably legit, not product placement. There was no need to have a Lexus in "Minority Report", other then as advertising.
- earthceltic, on 11/26/2007, -0/+8Go ahead and make this new and great technology. We wont buy it. The Internet has a nasty way of starting boycotts.
- skyteria, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7What!? You mean it wasn't part of Isaac Asimov's vision?
- insllvn, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7A movie producers yacht.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7If they put ads in the middle of the movie, what in the hell are you paying for when you "buy" the movie in the first place?
- Dokument, on 11/26/2007, -3/+10Do people buy pirated copies anymore?
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8Yeah...ad-free, pauseable, fast forwaradable...except for all those ads at the beginning. And if you have a name-brand player that disables fast-forward/skip during the commercials, well you're SOL...
- wild, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7In Fight Club, they kick the ***** out of a guy in front of a Mountain Dew machine. I never would have noticed the machine was there is I hadn't heard them laugh on the commentary at the fact MD actually paid them for it to be in the shot.
- CountBlah, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8I Robot, a few characters go on and on about Will Smith's vintage 2005 shoes because it's in the WORLD OF TOMORROW!
- skellener, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6- Would you buy or rent ad-supported movies if they were priced lower?
No. In fact, stop all the ***** advertising now on the current DVDs already!!!! -
