- nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And for a mere $7000, it can be yours!
- Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no digg for being too expensive and something that can already be done by the rich anyways, watch cribs
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about a cellphone that supports bluetooth, a $19.99 monthly unlimited data plan, a bluetooth adapater (or apple with built in bluetooth) and get wireless anywhere for a helluva lot cheaper? It's no cable, but it's faster than dialup.
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh ***** that. Just get a freakin' access card from Verizon or Cingular or wherever, and you're laptop has access wherever you can get a cellphone signal. $300, plus $100/month or less for unlimited access.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1um...
The cost is only about 200.00.
WRT54GL - Hyper firmware
Power inverter
Power strip
ClearWire - 1.5MB sec.
$35.00 month
GG
;) I love mine! - dmsteg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the "too expensive so no digg" posts.
This is cool beans even if it is impractical and can be accomplished through other means.
Let's hop into our Digg way back machines shall we?
If Digg was around in 94' 95'ish... it would look something like this:
Create your own CDROMS... Sony to introduce CDROM Devices to "burn" your own Compact Disks.
Comments:
$3,000??!!! That cost almost as much as my PC!!... And $20 a piece per CDR??!!... No thanks... I'll use floppies instead.
Knowing what we know now... who wouldn't have dugg the crap outta that story?
Technology always starts out expensive... but that doesn't make it any less diggworthy. - Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Much easier to just get a pigtail and use the spots around you
- Misos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe digg if the thing was ~$1000....
- Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do this with my 400 watt power inverter ,my wireless router, and my Wimax modem. I also charge for portable WIFI
- bluefire0728, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. If it was something innovative like creating something with low priced gizmos from Radio Shack, then that'd be a good digg.
- Miles314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty freakin cool idea. Too bad it'd cost about a third of what I actually paid for my car. Man, you gotta be making Shaq money to drive in wi-fi luxury.
- 0x2a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't digg advertisements
- dJCL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mini ITX computer system, DC-DC car power supply, atheros based wifi card, bluetooth dongle, cellphone with bluetooth and EDGE, Linux, and a little glue...
Same thing, less speed, easier and cheaper to setup, no TV.
I'm surfing on a KU band 2 way sattelite right now(stationary), the latency sucks...
Summer road trip across the continent will probably have something similar to the above in the car with me to keep me connected. - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Much easier to just get a pigtail and use the spots around you"
Works like a charm when I'm war biking. - tux0010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice....if I had a lot of money, I could finally have streaming radio in my car!
- hessamz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I don't digg advertisements"
DITTO. Plus at $7k this is pretty nuts. - sogo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.clearwire.com
- whatsthatsmell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the chauffeur is going to be the really expensive part.
the wireless card doesn't give you TV. yes you can get directv in your car, but it isn't on a tiny little antenna. - The_Ox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out the specifications PDF llinked on the website for pics and more info.. Kinda cool actually.
- wiredathome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a very cool idea but not for the average person. Hopefully though the cost will come down in time. I have no doubt that within the next few years, we'll all have 24/7 always on internet access on every device we use or carry.
- Lindsay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is like half the price of the car
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of you clearly don't understand what this means. First off, when you driving down the road you can't connect to hotspots and cell internet is only in limited areas and is normally pretty slow. This allows you to stay connected and get high speeds no matter where you are. I've been waiting for someone like this forever. Storm chasers have been waiting years for this. It will also be handy for news stations.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works fine for gaming bro.
no latency , even with a "2bar" signal.
I can drive down the freeway uploading a large file via FTP as well.
Then again, I live in Idaho - where towers are everywhere.
It will be nationwide "very soon".
;) - vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0d00d that clearwire service is awesome! has anyone tried to game on it? latency issues?
- procyon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy Shiite!! 7 Grand!!!
No thanks - wendyalison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The price is bad news already, it's a double-slammer for those without a car. That Verizon wireless card sounds more promising than something that still has such limitation.
- acidronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be nice to get on the net while going on a trip in your car. But for $7000 its just not worth it. Hopefully in the near future you will be able to have free wi-fi anywhere.
- docxxvi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$7k - wow i hope my 1970 lada will cope with the upstage
- jakkyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a bargain!!!!
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0goodness digg is gettin lame.
my client has had a sphere dish installed on his Yukon for about a year now with Internet and Cable access...
$7k ???
try $2500.... lames. - nafin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been working on an in-vehicle access solution for the company I work for.. and this in car WiFi stuff can be done for much less money by using EVDO or other 3G cell network connectivity..
So far the Junxion JB-110 ($700) is the forerunner.. I'll be testing it within a week:
http://www.junxion.com/product/
But there are also some consumer aimed ($300) 3G routers coming out like the Kyocera KR1:
http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr1-router/ - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems like nobody really reads what this car has onboard...
"The SpeedRay™ 3000 system consists of an outdoor antenna unit for satellite signal reception (data and TV), indoor antenna controller, satellite modem (for Internet access), WiFi router and a DBS satellite receiver (for live satellite TV). Integrated advanced sensors and a sophisticated tracking system provide access while the vehicle is in-motion or stationary. The SpeedRay™ 3000 antenna mounts securely to the cross bars of a vehicle roof rack or alternatively, RaySat manufacturers special brackets for RV and truck installations."
So this isn't for you!!!!!! If you're talking about sticking a wireless router and a cellphone in your car, try talking to a freaking SATELLITE with it. This is the equipment for a truly Wireless ISP, or a News company, or the Government to use as disaster response. This isn't a commercial application!!!
Why does it recieve my digg? Because I realize how useful this thing could be in a situation like Hurricane Katrina/Rita/Wilma. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this was going to be something cool, like a do it yourself project. Lame. No Digg.
- mydave, on 08/04/2008, -0/+0The SpeedRay™ 3000 is the world's first vehicle-based satellite antenna providing in-motion, high-speed Internet access to motorists, including emergency personnel, riding in cars, trucks, or motor homes.

http://ucdsigep.com/history.html - funderbolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I might be wrong, but doesn't EVDO cover this niche to some extent. The only benefit I can see is that the coverage might have less interruption because EVDO is based on cell phone coverage.
- diggidydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg for me cause it costs over $6000...lol
- timberfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool, but costs too much for the average road-warrior. hell, you could just get a t-mobile account and go to one fo the Starbucks on every corner of the country.
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blog spam
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't new stuff, haven't any of you ever watched Pimp My Ride??
- sentai, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0http://www.di7.info I appreciate the good advices written in this article
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I might be wrong, but doesn't EVDO cover this niche to some extent. "
Can EVDO support gigabit upstreams? Can EVDO do standard def TV broadcasting and still have bandwidth left over to do phone conversations, bi-directional audio and internet surfing? No? Okay then, different product segment. - abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice! But way too expensive...

http://hackedgadgets.com - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sucks, what a joke. I am considering digging it only because I like some of the comments offering alternatives and might want to reference them later sometime. Props to ramsinks.com for his comment about a great alternative at a cheap rate! I may just do it
- wiredathome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wasn't spamming anyone. I read about a cool new product, and yes it's not for everyone, but it is at least cool and interesting. I am not at all about spam and neither is my blog.
- h3adstr0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+07000
someday... :'( - wiredathome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was mistaken on the price, it's supposed to retail for $3595...Sorry
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, you can get satellite internet equipment from Directway for like $1,000 and then service costs like $69/month. Sure, it's expensive, but it is TONS CHEAPER than this POS...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0186 morons and counting...

What is Digg?
