- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32I'm surprised there is not a "Photography" topic on digg. I'd like that for tutorials and seeing good photos.
- pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Excellent article! I'm going to try this tonight.
- RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Great and timely article. I put up a lot of Christmas lights this year and tried taking pictures the other night with disappointing results. I'll try again with the aid of this article.
- sunimoto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14These are some horrible photos...
I doubt you even read the tutorial, b/c what you posted is a perfect example of how not to photograph xmas lights.
By the way, those are some huge, obnoxious displays. I find them untasteful and disgusting to look at. There's no style, just tons of light bulbs... - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Mmm, photography articles generally rock.
+1 - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I can't tell if he's being sarcastic or if he really is the largest douche alive.
And for the record: Digg is not a progressive site, Digg is a news site that gives editorial control to the masses to do whatever they want with. If that means becoming progressive, than okay. - Ek00stik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You suck. Of course it is going to be somewhat Christmas oriented, as it is getting close to Christmas. I recently put up my Christmas lights and was not even going to attempt to take pictures of them because I did not have luck with the camera last time I tried. After reading this article, I am going to give it another shot. I found the article informative and thank 2L84ME for posting it. If you don't like it, bury it. But we don't need to hear your reason for burying it.
Oh, btw, DUGG. - Powell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9nice to see a positive side of digg. everything is just ms vs apple and some of the comments tend to get boring to read. im definately gonna try this soon
- ubpsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So, umm, when do you want your Christmas related stories? Easter maybe? Or would you complain you can't find the stories about the easter bunny are hidden by all the Christmas stories? Besides, who wants to read Easter related things at Easter anyway?
- MobbyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I love it when these kinds of tutorials get posted. This is great! Thanks!
- taxonimous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dugg! Strobist (David Hobby) really knows what he is talking about where lighting is concerned, pretty much anything he puts on that blog is worth a digg. There is not much good stuff out there if you are looking for a *good* photography, lighting or dslr blog
- bluebri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And I just took pictures of the lights on my new house this year that turned out horrible. Definitely going to try this out.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Are you serious? This Holiday PC crap has gotten out of hand. If it doesn't interest you, look elsewhere or perform a search excluding christmas from it.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, thanks Scrooge. Maybe it's time to pull that yule log from out of your ass and enjoy the holidays already!
How can a respectable geek *not* like a building completely covered in colourful lights? Not to mention a technical story on how to properly capture digital photos of said shinies. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Awesome tips; definitely noted. Now if only it wasn't pitch black by 4:30pm here at this time of year :(
- sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As a photographer myself, this is all good advice. Shooting long before it looks dark to your eyes is one of the best tricks for taking 'night' shots.
- sunimoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is still a useful article on photography. You can apply it to other situations as well.
Check a link from cfdev. If there will be less photos like that, the world will be a better place :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2we need more technologies that try to "photograph what you see". i' ve read and used light manipulation methods in the past but it gets tiresome to care about all that after a while.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"everything is just ms vs apple and some of the comments tend to get boring to read."
And unrelated bad jokes about the Nintendo Wii.
*Way* too many fanboys lately. (*shudders*) - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I gotta agree. There is way too much crap in this yard. Its like they are just putting up more stuff to have more lights. I'd much rather see a well-thought out design than this.
- ritwikdey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice little article. Not too technical and oh so timely. Thank you.
- RaulMontana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been taking photos for quite a while now and this article is definitely worth reading... And also he's is great in explaining things.
- prof23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really Enjoyed the article and am going to try it out tonight.
- buzzert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg for Treo 650 in the picture!
- dogman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for this great info, been trying to take photos and they look terrible. Never thought about time of day for lighting!
- Tycho7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Zippo
So true. So true. I honestly think geeks have the most fun with holidays. I mean, we make cool stuff, we get into the spirit of the holiday, then we get to show it to our friends! Everybody wins. Except for MacLiberal, because Christmas is evil to him.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to finish my LED Christmas ornaments. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think Macliberal is an athiest..........he was actually saying Digg should be secular, and shouldn't mention religious events like Christmas. (That is what he means by "progressive"
Of course it's BS, because as betterth mentioned, Digg is user controlled.......if the Diggers want Christmas articles, they'll get it - toonworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, thanks for the tips! I just got back into photography. Years ago I was using a film SLR but now I have a nifty Nikon D80.
I'm constantly searching for better ways to take pictures, this will surely help... thanks again!

http://astore.amazon.com/familychristmasgifts-20 - BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's a lot more work, but I like the "fix it in post" method. Take a couple shots at different exposures to get all the detail and then combine the best parts of each area in photoshop. If you keep the camera in the exact same spot for each shot, it's not even that hard to do.
- guv920, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"The problem with 98% of the photos of Christmas lights is that most people wait until way too late to start shooting."
This is the kind of statement that makes me think about the ***** percentage of an article. Who comes up with those numbers? - toomuchgreentea, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2The advice is sounded, but the photos on the page are ... well, terrible.
- cfdev, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Some good tips here. As an aside, to view some houses with massive Christmas Light displays, click the below link.
http://www.typedhype.com/index.cfm/2006/12/13/Xmas-Light-Wars-andor-Christmas-Light-Competitions - MacLiberal, on 10/12/2007, -27/+1Sorry but had to bury this story, Digg is becoming too Christmas oriented, this is the holiday season and all that is discussed here is Christmas. Enough already, Digg is a progressive site and should be more neutral.
