- sorrow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Here are directions on how to change the necessary settings, courtesy of Craze3 in the Engadget comment section:
"1. Download the firefox extension for spoofing user-agents: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/
2. Restart firefox and goto: Tools > User Agent Switcher > Options > Options...
3. Click "User Agents" and then "Add"
4. Fill out the window with following info:
Description: Internet Explorer 7 (Windows Vista)
User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)
App Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer
App Version: 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)
Platform: Win32
5. Save it, goto Tools > User Agent Switcher > Then click the newly added one. Browse over to http://hotspot.t-mobile.com/vista/ and you should be redirected to a trial sign-up page.
Enjoy!" - coreygo, on 12/22/2008, -0/+13This doesn't work...
They require an ActiveX control to be run before you can get past the local only proxy.

You are telling google you are using IE7, but are actually using firefox. They send you the IE version of the page and everything breaks, because as soon as they try to create an activeX object (for AJAX) the code fails.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Uh, do you actually know what "kowtowed" means?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Dugg for the "(gasp) Linux". ROFL!
- kdhoffman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7After doing this in Firefox, my hosted gmail would only allow me to view basic html view, not the standard view.
Strange. - JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wikipedia - Kowtow, from the Chinese term Kòu tóu (Cantonese: Kau tàuh) (叩頭), is the act of deep respect shown by kneeling and bowing so low as to touch the head to the ground.
- orangekid13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well don't go out of your way to be retarded, this is too fancy...
1) type about:config in the address bar. enter.
2) right click. new, string. title it "general.useragent.override"
3) put in that string from the website
to reverse go about:config and delete the string - ChemEng, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Dugg for using the word kowtow.
- coreygo, on 12/22/2008, -0/+2Again people this DOES NOT WORK. It's not a question of just downloading the ActiveX control it has to run and it has to pass on a Vista machine before T-Mobile allow you fully onto the Internet. Even if you switch your user-agent and create the trial account (which you can do on a Mac, PC, or Linux, and in IE or Firefox or whatever) by changing your user-agent to NT 6.0 and IE7.0 you still won't get onto the Internet until you validate your Vista install by installing the ActiveX control. Think of the Windows Genuine Advantage stuff on downloads.microsoft.com.
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Explain how NOT usin the DRMed Cancer that is Micrsoft is kowtowing.
OS X is a lesser evil and Linux is freedom. - Triffid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6In what world is Steve Jobs NOT The Man?
- CygnusX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how many people are fuming with frustration because they printed out this article and ran to a hotspot location to follow the steps.
Step 1: Create account using the instructions above on an active internet connection
Step 2: Go to hotspot location and use account
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Who needs profit now that you're not a moron - zagaberoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wonderful! I've got a laptop running tiger and one running breezy badger, so this is a great little trick. Gotta love the interweb.

http://tophomemortgageloan.com - HeL1ves1nYou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone running Firefox that doesn't have IE7 installed manage to get past the ActiveX
I was sitting in Starbucks for a good hour and a half trying to figure out a way to get around it. Lucky for me the Buffalo Wild Wings next door has free WiFi - kabronkline, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How about just using ICMPTX or NSTX? I use ICMPTX for getting free Internet through just about every public hotspot.
- artbarizo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Changing the User Agent String will not give you access to T-Mobile Hotspots. The only workaround I know that works (without purchasing Windows Vista) is running a virtual machine of the the old beta. I've posted an article on my blog with instructions here:
http://www.hackernotcracker.com/2007-02/connect-to-t-mobile-hotspots-for-free-technically-without-vista.html - coreygo, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1It doesn't qualify as a hack at all. Since it's not designed to stop you from using whatever you want once you validate your Vista install. If it were a hack you wouldn't need Vista, full stop. I mean I can validate my Vista/IE7 install then close IE7 and use Firefox or open Virtual PC and use FreeBSD or whatever. That doesn't matter because I've got Vista. If you want to qualify this as a hack then go to Starbucks again, and don't load Vista then try the hack once more :-).
- davenaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still waiting for confirmation from 1 person that they were able to get this to work...
- whiterajah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm writing this from a Starbucks hotspot on a MacBook. I have a prerelease version of Vista running under Parallels. If you connect from Parallels using Internet Explorer 7, you can authenticate and then use the connection from OS X.
Verified as working! - whiterajah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, but the point is that you can log in using Vista and then use OS X once you're on. I think that qualifies as a hack.
PS You have to set the Network Adaptor in Parallels to 'Shared Networking' - WebsterJTC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea but you are running vista.
- growler1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Devrdander
The IE7pro extension has a user agent config. for 7.0/Vista. Might be worth a look, particularly if it allows you to download the activeX control... - alexhuyalegzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really good. Almost all people think so
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1*coughs* ..net stumbler.
- Devrdander, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Could you use an Agent switcher for IE? I know there is one or two out there.
- AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Damn, if only this had been around when I was on holiday (late December through most of January to Australia and New Zealand) whilst I was waiting around at various airports. There were a lot of those t-mobile things. Thankfully some airports had free wi-fi. (Bless you Hong Kong)
- ChemEng, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@7of7
kowtow /= camel toe
For some reason Digg editted out my < and > not equal sign. - Handcannons, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1****
Why should you be left out of those three months of free T-Mobile WiFi just because you don't kowtow to The Man?
****
Talk about spin, you should work for a politician. How about "Why should you be left out of those three months of free T-Mobile WiFi just because you didn't pay for it?" New Vista users get this because they paid for Vista, and surely because Microsoft and T-Mobile have made a deal it's not like this is some freebie you're missing out on. Believe it or not you are NOT entitled to anything just because someone else has it. - ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Come on guys, there are no stories about the iPhone on the front page. If we all start Digging now we might be able to get some on there by tea time.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Tell Google to fix GMail. HTTP parsing is a no-no in Web design, but browsers with properietray 'extensions' and poor CSS support get developers tempted (it would be easier to neglect those, but market share makes that harder).
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I agree, Dugg for using kowtow
- ChemEng, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1@7of7
kowtow camel toe - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4I hope they kill this off because of you guys. You guys all bitch about Vista and then try to nab any of the benefits which Vista users get. It depresses me, to say the least.
(I got a 24 hour T-Mobile WIFI access card at the New York event so it's not like I'd be hurt) - 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2If you're running Linux or OSX you already "kowtowed" to the man.

What is Digg?
