- Dissy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, if you boot from a Windows 2000 CD, it will not ask for a password to mount the NTFS drive.
Then use the dos-ish command to change the password of the account.
If the account name was Moo and you want to change the password to Cow simply use the command net user Moo Cow
Boot back into XP and away you go, zero data lost! - Andreasvb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's good to know this too.
I use this neat little booter, Offline NT Password.
Get it here http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ - DiScDuCe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't this super super common sense? Um .. duh .. if you have the admin password or a password reset disk.. of course you get get back in!!! There is no HACK or SECRET here.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or
http://ubcd4win.com/ - doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What dodger2020 said. I've used a boot CD (Bart's? UBCD? Knoppix? I forget, sorry) to reset the admin p/w on my XP machine (just to see if I could do it), worked like a charm.
Which is yet another demonstration of the age-old security truth: if you don't have *physical* security, you don't have *any* security. - doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now might be a good time to point out the big advantage of an actual password reset disk (like TFA shows you how to make): While it's relatively trivial to reset the admin password and gain permissions to folders, if a user has *encrypted* a folder then all the permissions in the world won't do you a bit of good - you're SOL without a password disk, the contents will be scambled and you won't have the key.
So if you're using NTFS and encrypting folders, you had better make yourself a PW reset disk, Just In Case. - csansbury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Everyone knows how to get into Windows XP without a password!"
Not Me!....'til now!
Dugg - dodger2020, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or you could simply use one of the many password reset discs available online. Most use linux and will simply replace the admin password. The only time it would cause problems is it you have parts of the drive based on that password. You'll lose access to that stuff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wasn't this on "the broken"? I think they described it a lot easier than Microsoft can.
- zelgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just don't do this with a USB drive, leaves it open so any mass storage USB drive can change the pass on the user account. My comp sci techer found that out the hard way.
- GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0basic knowledge for the average computer nerd, but there was a time when i really really wish i had known stuff like this
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When they say this, "Note If you have not created a password reset disk, and you have also forgotten the password for all user accounts, you cannot log on to your existing Windows installation for security reasons. This information applies to starting Windows XP typically, to safe mode, and to Recovery Console. In this case, you must perform a "clean" installation of Windows XP, re-create all user accounts, and then reinstall all your programs." ,
It's not true.. lol
I can use my boot disc to install a new user account on my folder in a new windows folder, then take the sam file's encrypted password and stick it into my old sam file and try to boot off the old windows folder with the old user account with the new password. :D
I haven't tested this, but it's worth a try if this happens to you.
If all else fails, i usually just keep my new windows folder and delete my old windows folder so i can keep my files. Although i would lose certain settings and certain programs would need to be re-installed like directx or whatever, but my old desktop folder and program files folder would still be there. - neophit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is an awesome tool you could use as well:
http://www.d--b.webpark.pl/dreampackpl.htm - Daracle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah....It just tells you how to login as an admin?
- middy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to know.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^yup
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0as a few have mentioned above, i too use: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ its a great method to get in there quickly and just get it done.
you can use other bootable livecds and mount the windows partition then manually edit the needed files, but this is quick and you can edit any user once in.
also, if you want to stay in a windows environment to do this, make a bartpe bootable image cd. hit google for 'bartpe' and you'll be happy. =) - jedimasterdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0am i the only one reading this?? It basically said "if you forget your password just log in as Admin or admin equivalent and reset that password. No *****!!! We needed a article for that?
- hujujuj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just boot up the PC in safe mode. that's all...
- liquidice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"1) Boot up in safe mode
2) Change password
3) Restart
Who doesn’t know this? I could understand un-hashing some password files for some shady reason. Although, some people will find this helpful I guess."
You can't always get into safe mode, because it can still be passworded. - teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01) Boot up in safe mode
2) Change password
3) Restart
Who doesn’t know this? I could understand un-hashing some password files for some shady reason. Although, some people will find this helpful I guess. - Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone shell know how to reset a password.
If you don't go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ - caffeinated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nrdcommander anyone?
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just re-install windows and use the administrator account to move the data after i reset who the owner of the folder is.
- Pharohbender, on 02/17/2009, -0/+0use the k-systems disk found at torrent sites, contains heaps of drivers and if you boot up with the cd option 2 boots up the console like UBCD and you can select password tools and you have about 6 programs you can use, perfect.
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're right but people that forget their passwords probably do not lock down safe mode or they can have a admin change it. who locks down safe mode unless its in a work/public environment?
- spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap. I thought by the title that this would tell me how to walk up to any XP machine and get on, like presting Esc. with Win. 98 gets you on.
- derrickkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg, I thought the article was disappointing. Was expecting some cool hack to let me in
- The_Truth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, if you have xp pro, and it's a factory install, chances are you dont have an admin password set. all you have to do at this point is press ctrl+alt+del x2 and type in administrator (with no password)... for windows home edition, you must go into safemode. not so much a hack, but it will give you admin on ~80% of all windows xp computers.
since the idea of the usb drive hack, i plan on making a bit of code that allows you to get "system" user instead of admin. Plug n' Play yall! - bigfatdonny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people keep digging stupid *****? This article tells you how to log in as an administrator. Big ***** deal. A TechNet article needs to exist to tell us that?
- lucask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i thought this was going to be a linux link not MICRO!!!
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are people even reading this before digging it?
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Password reset disk? Admin account? Pfft! You don't even need to touch Windows to reset the admin password and 0wn anything you want. The resources to do that have already been mentioned in this thread.
- blackfish22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is an easier, cooler, better way... to get into any xp machine fast.
http://www.wikihow.com/Hack-or-Break-Into-a-Windows-Xp-Computer-Without-Changing-Password - bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0ug should have read before i dugg
- techvivek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey take a look at this
http://vivekkutal.blogspot.com/2005/09/get-administrator-password-of-windows.html
to get the existing password (not resetting it) - jadoty, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0I have the same problem with XP Home, and have already reset the password of every account using the Linux boot cd and it still won't take a password for any account, either in regular or safe mode. After I rerun the Linux disk, it shows all the accounts already set to blank, but I still can't get in. Any further ideas?
- aphextwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do people keep commenting on the stuff they think is stupid? Why don't you people just go on with your lives..Mark it as lame or whatever but let the people here have an intelligent discussion. Some people don't know this stuff. I understand you have the right to post whatever you feel like but don't any of you have simple consideration for the people who don't know? Can't any of you rise above your egos and become mentors? Don't you understand that this can be new to some of us? I haven't seen it before so it's new to me, though I did know how to do this.
- warofwrath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting discussion but lame story: no digg
- droxy429, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lame link..
anything that begins with support.microsoft.com is generally very basic stuff.
i almost dugg it without reading expecting it was booting up in a linux live cd and changing the password. but no digg - MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why the hell are people digging this? All the article says is to use a password reset disk or login with your admin username/password. It's ridiculous that crap like this makes it to the homepage just because people like the title.
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Everyone knows how to get into Windows XP without a password!
- LaBelette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think linking to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article is a little weak...
Why not linking to an article that explains how to use the Microsoft KB, THAT would be useful. - Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I would like to see a knowledge base for Dugg. The first and only entry necessary, "How not to digg stories that are years old."
1) Look at the date the story was created.
2) If the story is less then 30 days old, feel free to consider digging it. However if the story is more then 30 days old, then most people don't really give a *****. Post it in your blog and stop polluting the main page with crap like this. - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0typo,
"It's not true.. lol
I can use my boot disc to install a new user account in a new windows folder," - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Awesome read and great information considering I run a tech company that works on computers daily. Digg++
