- netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'm really suprised to see this hit the front page. I saw it in the upcoming section when he first submitted it and figured it was going to be buried as spam.
//boy was I wrong - Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So in other words, someone grabs a random video from youtube or google in order to make money off of it by spamming the link to YOUR site instead to the actual youtube or google url.
You make the money from it, as well as the spammers, while the people who are paying for it(youtube/google) get nothing. Why not try hotlinking images from other sites while you're at it? - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This *is* against the TOSs.
From the YouTube TOSs Section 5F (my capitalisation);
"YouTube permits you to link to materials on the Website for PERSONAL, NON-COMMERCIAL PURPOSES ONLY. In addition, YOUTUBE PROVIDES AN "EMBEDDABLE PLAYER" FEATURE" which you may incorporate into your own PERSONAL, ***NON-COMMERCIAL*** WEBSITES for use in accessing the materials on the Website, provided that you include a prominent link back to the YouTube website on the pages containing the Embeddable Player."
IANAL, but as this blatantly breaches these terms, at best YouTube can (and will) have this commercial usage stopped- either technically or legally. This isn't- or soon won't be- a minor infringement which YouTube would be happy to overlook. Whether they'd sue the owners for the cost of the bandwidth I'm less sure about, but I wouldn't dismiss the possibility.
Another legal issue; the look and feel of the website is *very* similar to YouTube itself (in particular the logo), and probably leaves the author open to legal action.
Anyway, the whole thing is a potential leech; YouTube pay for the high bandwidth costs, someone creates the video.... and yet the people who get paid are the submitter (probably not the creator) and GreedTube's owner? - open_sauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This story and http://digg.com/design/Completely_Useless_Inventions are both stories mentioned in:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Exploring_Pay_Per_Digg
In other words, someone is offering to pay digg users to rapidly digg them to get to the front page.
Looks like its working as they are currently the 1st 2 stories on the front page.
This comment is cross posted to the other story - patience, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8at least yu got the name right
- netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not pissed at all, just pointing out that my experience w/ Digg, I figured the userbase would mark this as spam.
Guess I'm still learning what is and is not front page worthy.
And I doubt this is "bad" as there are a ton of sites that embed youtube videos and cover the rest of the page in ads from various places.
I did notice in another story's comments someone had mentioned that videos are not allowed to be used in conjunction with adsense per thier TOS, but its either not enforced or not true seeing as just about all video sites have adsense on em. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is SPAM and probably violates YouTube's terms of service.
- goodcompany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Are we really supposed to believe you made this site in one night with some "spare time"?
- DD32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3kinda stupid really.... lots of digg viewers wont click = low CTR = extra low payouts
D - Tunguska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ ugene:
It's not illegal, but YouTube has every right to take legal action as it breaks the sites' 'Terms of Service', the contract you agree to when using parts of YouTube. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5and the other 50% goes to you, after submitting to digg?
You're either a clever businessman, or an idiot for such blatant advertising - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the ads are displayed on the video page.. they are google text ads.. seemless so for better click through rates
- joindigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Same here, lmao!
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YouTube are entitled to at least make *some* money from your videos because they are providing the bandwidth and hosting service, and you have the choice to upload or not upload to the site.
OTOH, GreedTube seems to be doing nothing; someone (probably not the creator) links to a video, GreedTube uses YouTube's bandwidth, and the two of them split the proceeds. As this is explicitly against YouTube's TOSs, it won't last (see my full post further on). - Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It also violates Google's Adsense TOS. I had a similar idea a while back, but when I looked into it I discovered Google wouldn't allow anything which offers an incentive for people to view adverts (e.g.revenue sharing). It won't be long before this is shut down.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Two things; YouTube pay for both site maintenance and (very significantly in this case) the bandwidth. Plus, you have a choice whether or not you want to upload to the service.
GreedTube give 50% of the revenue to people who *submit* videos, not those who create them. In how many cases will these be the same people? Not many, I'd guess. - zblackeagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let the clickfraud begin?
- bamassippi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YouTube's lawyers send a cease-and-decist email in 3.. 2.. 1..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1which site or person are you referring to, when you comment on a user using the service?
in greentubes case in what way have they acutally agreed to any terms when their end users are supplying the content and not greentube itself?
for users to grab embedded code from youtube and put it on greentube? who is actually agreeing to or not agreeing to said youtubes TOS etc? - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Embedding on COMMERCIAL sites is prohibited. YouTube evidently believe that small-scale embedding is in their own interests, but the likes of GreedTube isn't. Whether this is right or not, that's how it is.
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is against the google adsense TOS anyway. You're not allowed to show ads on pages with copyrighted material. It's a rule 99% of adsense publishers flaunt, but it gives google the right to instantly ban them. If you guys start making money off something in a way they do not agree with, you might all be up ***** creek. That's why I'm not joining. :)
- jkr06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't see how this can be legal.
Btw, why only youtube, why not google, or any other video sharing site. - HMMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can disable the external embeded video in youtube if you want. but youtube still making money through your video. the best solution is not to upload to youtube. ;)
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And YouTube are happy to pay for the bandwidth for a rival site (which is explicitly against their TOSs anyway; see my post above) without receiving anything in return?
- joejibbons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nicely done! One flaw...why would someone visit greedtube in the first place??
Perhaps to post videos. But wait, these are the folks who want to make money
so would they be clicking on the ads.... time can tell.
I don't suppose youtube at $1.6B bid from google is as stupid to let others ride on
their bandwidth. More so, if they get pissed (shhhh we won't tell), its quite easy
to filter video calls from greedtube server and would that be the end of greed?
This is what I don't like about digg. Somehow, it has a wierd way of disclosing the
truth matter that you may not have considered before.
Sorry for the harsh comments Norm. I wish you luck. On a side note, can not believe
you finished this in a night???? Is that true? If so, kudos to you man.. It's nicely done.
Cheers!
Joel - CoLL1eR, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1Making money with youtube the blackhat way.
http://j3t.org/2008/10/12/making-money-with-youtub ... - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd say that made it "illegal" then...
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1your domain has expired how impressive
- PARTyZAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buried. Lame ass webpage making money for doing nothing. Digg spam.
- shaharsol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YouTube get their logo on their embedded player - so they do get mentioned and linked to. Anyway - why would they allow embedding in the first place if it wasn't for their own interest?
- patience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hire a lawyer asap or shut the site down.
An 800lb gorilla is about to come crashing through your life.
I hope you are based in Russia or China cause it won't be pleasant. - SillyJoe, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1If you want to create original content and get 75% of the ad share, you should checkout http://www.infobarrel.com
Completely legit, but only for people creating their own content. - rycars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, get Dailymotion working so we can get some titays in this house.
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Youtube are making money off peoples hard work, i see no problem with these people making a bit of money themselfs.
- JoshHendo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Except I can't see any ads on the site...
- shaharsol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I have to agree with you. They do note "commercial" in their TOS. However - I still beleive they don't really mind about it and that it serves their interests just fine. What they should be angry about is their logo ripp off...
- archerx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4what if i don't want people making money from MY videos?
This seems like another ebaums world scandel... - testdrivemedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You have spelling mistakes on your website. Congratulations. I wonder how long it takes 'YouTube' to come down on this guy, as clearly it's a serious copyright infringement. At least the logo is anyway.
- rickybuitrago, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0There“s also marketyourvlog.com - they help youtubers make money with their videos by adding a money link to the description box of the videos.
- ugene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1so.. is it iligal?
- newmore, on 04/21/2008, -0/+0Can't open your page???
- testing321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi Noah, if you see this please email nopersonaldataforyou@gmail.com. I'm wondering what happened to your site.
- cdemers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You might want to disable Adblock and stuff.

- JohnClabo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Awesome! Thanks for the info.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3yeah the cool thing about the site is that now we can all submit videos to digg from greedtube.. and make money! i'm gonna contact the digg folks tomorrow about getting the thumbnail thing working
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nice idea. Gonna submit some vids :)
- Reziarfg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Then post them on Youtube...?
Moreover, how legal is this? Won't Youtube get angry? - shaharsol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0As long as the creator of the content is the one to receive the share - that's fine and everybody's happy.
There is another great way to monetize content that you create - not only videos - namely Triond on http://www.triond.com - stagbeetle, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2This ***** is awesome....
