- lemonsensation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24another question to think about, is Digg profitable?
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Let's do the math:
The Internet as we know it today has existed for about 11 or so years. Digg has been around for 2 years. 2/11 = 18.1% which is about roughly 5/24 = 20%, or the same amount of time for most people's average night of sleep, so yeah, Digg has literally grown "overnight".
How's that for proof? :P - aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I've never heard of mashable.com. How can they give me advice on how to be an internet hit? Clearly they need to take their own advice.
- MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Step 1: Have the internetz
Step 2:??????
Step 3: Profit !! - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I'm sorry but it's taken Digg 2 years to be where it is at today, is that really "Over night"?
- cjmemay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Step 1: Have the internetz
Step 2:??????
Step 3: Profit !!"
the sad thing is, there are SOO many people out there that STILL believe this. A guy I know was telling me how he just got himself a website and it was gonna be the biggest thing. By the way, this is a guy who I had to show how to get to Yahoo on a computer where the home page was Comcast. He was like one of those monkeys from the beginning of 2001. But somehow this mystical box must have money inside it. If he can only figure out a way to get it out.
I know people like this existed before the internet, I remember the infomercials that were directed at them, but somehow it seems there are more of them now. - aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They didn't include "Post ***** sites on digg comments to try and get an increase in traffic."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10God ***** dammit. They use Paris Hilton as an example for Digg's popularity. Buried for such a stupid article.
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15"Tickle, Great pick!"
I don't know why, but that was just creepy. - computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10...did you just call beer "*****"?
- aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@lemonsensation
In short: Yes. Digg is very, very profitable.
http://www.blogprofit.net/archives/2006/Jun/26/digg_30_ad_revenue_could_top_800k_a_month.html
That's not the blog I was looking for. But still, it gets the point across. I read a blog somewhere that says digg generates close to $250k a week in adsense revenue. The blog above is slightly lower then that, but still. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@dagamer34:
You forgot to convert your units -- "years" into "hours".
;-) - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No, but you don't have to expect overnight success. We started 4 years ago, and now we are making enough income to support two people working at it full time. And in the future, things should go even better.
Generally, so long as you work a lot and have a quality product, it is hard to lose. - RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Is it physically possible to fit more ads on that page?
- Yrlec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't agree with their views on viral marketing. Generally speaking it is harder to be successful if your users are forced to get their friends to join before they can fully use your site/software. Sure, it helps if you already are successful, but if you want to get the wheels rolling you need to close the gap between you and the user. Not widen it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In general including site links in signatures on forums is surprisingly effective though, provided that the post itself is helpful of course.
- taxonimous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Overnight success, get rich quick, Web 2.0 ... sucker magnets.
"Overnight successes" usually take a lot longer in reality, just because they are relatively unheard of then seemingly suddenly successful doesn't mean there has not been a long process backed up by expertise, hard work and experience.
Web 2.0 .. don't get me started ... - OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One Word: SEX
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One hacker, one social genius, a good idea... doesn't matter if it's original, one person that has access to a ***** ton of cash and knows what to do with it, and perfect timing. I'd say that's a good recipe.
- duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@lemonsensation
don't believe the lies.
from kevin rose's wikipedia article (taken from businessweek a few months back)
"Kevin explained that Digg is still not a profitable website as of now, saying that "i still have to save up for a couch." though it will be in the future, once Digg's ad campaign is run by Federated Media. In fact, Digg is at a loss as of 2006. The '$60 million' stated by BusinessWeek was obtained by assessing the value of Digg.com and taking Kevin's 30-40% ownership."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_rose - DeusMachinae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now that's one site that won't be an overnight success, no matter how much it's spammed.
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"natural search idea" is a banality, tautology.
"You are getting hit more because you are high on Google for this type of search?" That is the only explanation he gives for Rottentomatoes.
Very lame. I suspect advertisment. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NicT, you must be taken in by Steve Jobs too much. Sure its nice to hype up every little feature, even if you yourself have bit that off of other places, but still you need an actual product.
Otherwise we'll have millions hawking the equivalent of the Phantom Console and the Poseidon underwater resort instead of just thousands. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@dancrew32
What do bees have to do with beer? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"It's 1998 all over again! My, how short Americans' memories are!! Get ready for the pop any day now."
The difference between now and then, is commercials/advertising. You will be waiting for the "pop" for a long time... - aloser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3404 (:
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how many times do i have to say this...
You obviously haven't seen beefest... we won and we have the greatest beer in the whole world. - quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6How to have an overnight internet success story?
Have an overnight internet success - kazisdaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Startup-Review.com is a great resource, although this digg should have been on the original site, not someone elses' clogged advertisment site with little data.
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And that's exactly why nobody likes you.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Watch in a few years we are going to see a get rich quick infomercial on TV on how to make you're own social website.
This is how it works, when something becomes mainstream, or new and cool. The market gets over saturated with wannabes. Digg has already created a lot of knock off sites, myspace has to.
It seems that you're going to be logging on to the net, instead of logging on to your computer. Sure we will still have computers, but everything we do will be in a browser of some sort. With web applications taking over, we can already see the trend with sites such as writely.
I think if you're smart and a good programmer/developer you create a great website/application that is easy to use but very powerful if you want to make it rich in Web 2.0
In the meantime I'm contemplating what Web 3.0 is going to look like... I have no clue by the way. - h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"But does your idea truly have the potential to attract millions of monthly unique visitors in less than two years time?"
Your blog doesn't and I'm not going.

do most people get less than 5 hours sleep?
(not to belittle your cleverness) - StupidLiberal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4You guys actually read digg without Adblock?
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA - adragons, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2How about
1. Create a great product that is easy to use, likable, and ads nothing to the consumers stress?
2. Profit! - aloser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Some good tips; gave me some ideas for quick features to add to my web app.

- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3he's right through, one of my projects: http://lib.rario.us received more traffic from a couple of my comments than it did from a direct digg submission (which i think was botched (and not submitted by me, btw)).
