Stop masturbating +5 hours - mproberts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50Stop reading Digg... I think that would get me another 10 hours or so
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17There isn't much new information here, but it does organize a bunch of stuff you can do to be more efficient. I dont know about the whole '36 hour day' thing, you probably really won't do that much more. Summary (seriously, read my summary and you've basically read the entire article):
1. Improve your sleeping habits
2. Eat healthy food
3. Try to multitask; encorporate exercise into daily tasks
4. Plan out your day;get organized
5. Get better at typing. "Time Savings from Improving Your Typing Speed = Approximately 0.75 Hours"(wtf??)
6. Get better at reading! Remember that crap your english teacher was talking about? Yeah, 'active reading'... do that.
7. Develop better learning habits, like listening to audio tapes
8. Don't use the computer to waste time, like with video games, but rather find software that will cut the time you spend on the computer.
9. Don't watch a ton of TV.
10. Be an opportunist; interact with people, and multitask while doing that.
My only worry about actually going through with all this is the possibility of adding more stress to your life. - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"3. Try to multitask; encorporate exercise into daily tasks"
Hey, I tend to watch movies while I game on my PC, does that count? :p - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How about, "Do Less and Enjoy it More"? Geez, what's the rush in cramming so much stuff in your day? Planning on dying tomorrow? Stop and smell the roses, I say.
- absurdist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"and doing well it seems."
Right. Come back and tell me how he's doing after a few years of it.
This is like the guy who jumps off the 100-story building and as he's passing the 75th floor, says, "So far, so good!" - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Um...am I the only one that thinks this guy is kind of weird?
"I check my email while I'm using an exercise ball" "It was so much fun knowing I was exercising my mind and body at the same time!"
10 dollars says he doesn't have a girlfriend. - FGDave, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Really cool stuff! Talk about being fully optimized!
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't know about everyone here, but I'd much rather use the 24 hours I have in a day to their fullest rather than try to shoehorn 10 more virtual (and essentially empty) hours into my day. I think if we could all find a way to do less, we'd be a bit happier. As for me, I'm sick of multitasking. I think I'm happier when I can actually observe my life rather than wonder where the time went. But, that's me. Your milage may vary.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+810. Multi-tasking while talking to someone...
I tried that, then my girlfriend stopped talking to me for a while =( - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If he rubbed his crouch up and down on the computer at the same time with occasional glances at a second monitor running a XXX.com slide show he might be able to release some of the stress levels his program probably induces. All at the same time!
mmmm...multi-tasking. - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah right, sleep less live a shorter life, duh!. Research shows 8 hours of sleep is the optimum level for health and longevity.
- gizmo3x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I actually tried to do a polyphasic sleep schedule a few years ago... It all stemmed from watching the Simpsons episode about Thomas Edison, who apparently according to wikipedia never actually practiced it, go figure. My findings, total BS. I felt like crap the whole time I was doing it. And it is alot harder than one would think to be able to take scheduled naps at a certain time each day. Like if you have to take a 20 minute nap every 6 hours, that kinda falls into your work schedule... my boss was cool at the time but she still wasn't diggin the napping! ; )
My opinion, if you want to feel like a sleep deprived monkey on crack, go for it... but otherwise stick with the normal 8 hour sleep period. - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey my 'update' time ran out!! Oh well....
Other recent research on multi-tasking has shown - what is rather obvious I suppose - that the more tasks you do at once the less efficient and more stressed you become, and the more likely you are to make mistakes.
Do one task with your full attention, and not only do it quicker and more fully but with less mistakes and less stress - theoretically expanding your life span. (stress wears your system down quicker over time.) - RichCoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Another one that saves time... Cut distractions. Most people's computers are filled with them: web browsers, solitaire, itunes, etc. Ever spend all day at your computer "working" and really got almost nothing done?
-rich - mistercoder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I have my own new sleep technology, it's called PolyAwesomeUberLeet sleep. How it works is you go to bed when you're tired, and wake up at some later time feeling well rested! Then you're happy and have a nice day! Cool, huh!
- baronvonrolo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep That's probably the part of the article that's worth reading the most about. I'm fascinated by this now.
- UsernameTaken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks man. Nice to see a trimmed down version that actually saves reading time (wasn't that all about?). The original article is so full of plugs that I felt like watching an infomercial.

Learn DVORAK. (-; - aussieaubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2most of australians want more time to sleep and be on holidays and fight crocodiles anyway, so this doesnt really help....
- joefish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"10. Be an opportunist; interact with people, and multitask while doing that."
Usuauly when interacting with other people, they would much rather your full attention. For example, people can tell if you're really listening to them when they're talking.
On another note - sure I believe in getting more things done in the time we have - but it's also benefical to take a break every now and then - and just relax! Some people take this GTD thing way too far, and end up workaholics. I for one don't want to die early of a heart-attack because I've lived my life always stressed out about getting the next thing done on time. - sporkwitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I stopped reading after the first bit didn't go into much of any detail; the BLOG just linked to ANOTHER BLOG. Find me a decent, well-written, supported article. I don't need a half-assed piece of poorly supported drivel designed to get you blog hits.
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How to have a 36 hour day: Have the earth move the slightest bit slower in its rotations. =P
- 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All this nonsense around sleep doesn't add up...
I recall some very good studies that show that people need, and without question GET, on average, 8 hours of sleep a night, (which does lower with old age).
People who claim to live on 4 or 5 hours of sleep do inevitably make up the missing hours to get back to an 8 hour average, like clockwork. - thecwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How long did you try it for? I had a polyphasic sleeping pattern (not that adventurous due to time constraints, but rather sleeping three times for 1.25hrs each) and after a month or so I felt great. Currently I sleep 2*3hrs due to time constraints again ;)

- Bakuryu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This doesnt add time for you to do stuff, it only substitutes things you already do, alot of that stuff listed replaces things I do now so how would that add time for me?
- Falconwing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Phew. 36 hours? Man, that's tough.
At my workplace, we were happy if we could get 25 hours per day by working through the lunch hour. - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dam, I am a fool for digging before reading.
"Reduce you TV watching by half"
This article makes you want to work faster. Some of us have crap jobs and working faster gets us nowhere. You can't go home early if you are on shift work. It just means you do more work for the same money. Bah to that.
I have a suggestion. Double your leisure time with friends and family and half your work time. It will make you happier. Then you won't care about how long the day is.
Who ever wrote this sounds like a middle management prick. - norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can undigg
- mattgilberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how about a case of Bawls?
- leftover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This whole article is hypocritical. It tells you ways to save time in language that would waste the most time.
- MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some good ideas, but before you mess with your sleep you may want to read this, http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-03/yu-tmo032406.php
- MagikalGiraff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I beleive that polyphasic sleep is a good thing. I'm currently trying it out. At the same time I also beleive maintaining some 'core' sleep is a good thing. Core sleeping would be adding 4 hours of sleep every week on Wednesday, for example, that way you get back some of that less-important, but still needed, type of sleep.
You can make a connection between the way bodybuilders eat (6 meals a day, each one small). This is an extremely healthy way to eat. This helps your body increase its metabolism, which in turn extracts less fat and more healthy nutrients (vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and amino acids).
The reason why your body does this is because in the past you would hunt and hunt, and for days you would go with out food. When you finally ate that piece of meat your body wanted to get the most fat out of it as possible because your body could never be sure when you would eat next. If you had a constant food supply, and could eat alot all of time (6 meals daily) then your body wouldn't want you to put on the extra body fat because that could seriously mess up your hunting skills (ever seen a fat sprinter before?).
Though this method of eating doesn't exactly correlate into sleeping the same way... it's still a way to get the most out of napping. When a person naps they don't have to keep on their 'security' senses. When you were sleeping you had to keep alert so an animal, such as a bear, wouldn't kill you in your sleep. You had to be ready to spring awake and defend yourself (or just run away). But to be able to do that it takes energy. When you nap, however, it doesn't run, or not as much atleast. It's primary focus is to refresh and reboot your mind along with giving energy to continue to hunt(or whatever else your body needs to do).
Now that doesn't mean that you don't need your some regular sleep, it's just that napping gives you the most efficient kind of sleep. So I recommend you try polyphasic sleep and in the mean time try to incorporate some 'core' sleep into your schedule. - soupisgoodfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I highly advise anyone thinking of giving polyphasic sleep a go to read this:
http://www.supermemo.com/articles/polyphasic.htm
I was going to give it a go, and upon reading up on it, I discovered that page. I think I'll go for biphasic instead. - superdink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This concept is pretty interesting. I linked to a guy names Steve Pavlina, who journaled his polyphasic sleep experiment. He slept 20 minutes every four hours and raved about the results. Although, he did say that he lost complete track of "days" becuase they had no meaning anymore. My link to his site is on http://www.superdink.com/06_01_17.html
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh yeah. I tried pressing the "digg" button again, that didn't work so I presumed that you couldn't do it. It's a bit small though.
- Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's interesting how many people are "a research assistant in a sleep laboratory" and still don't know anything. I've been fully polyphasic for well over 2 months with no side effects, in fact I've been going to the gym, gained 28 lbs in muscle so far and feel the best I have in my whole life.
But this debate is pointless, some people still choose to see the world as flat and no matter how much you tell them otherwise, they're going to argue it. It will be interesting to see the change in attitude in the future once they realize "oh, it wasn't harmful after all."
btw this article links to my website, gave me an assload of traffic, so thanks y'all! - topher67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0See here for a different approach: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Live_on_24_Hours_a_Day
- PhiMix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Polyphasic sleep is one of the best things that I have ever tried out. Its two months since I started out and the problems with the schedule are social and not physiological.
I feel very awake around the clock, but I choose to introduce 3 hours of core sleep after 10 days or so to be able to sleep next to my wife. The core sleep means that I only need three naps, so I get by with 4 hours of sleep.
I plan to stay on the schedule forever, so be patient and I'll be happy to report my results after a year, two years, etc. :) - superdink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sorry for the dup... just saw verde's post above.
