- doncarajo, on 05/22/2009, -1/+42You have to pay to RECEIVE text messages??? WTF. I've never heard of such a thing. So if I hated someone really bad I could send them a few thousand txts (through the email gateway) and run up their bill? I'm surprised this hasn't happened already.
- RightSaidJames, on 06/11/2009, -2/+40It astounds me how far in the dark ages the US are with text messaging. Paying to receive text messages, check. Having to pay through the roof for a text bundle, check.
- DreKor, on 05/22/2009, -3/+16which is hard when your goal it TO text
- m85476585, on 05/22/2009, -0/+13Filling up a terabyte hard drive by text message would cost $1.3 billion! Doing the same with data by the megabyte on my verizon plan ($2/mb) would cost $2 million.
- GodAImighty, on 05/21/2009, -0/+12People who were lucky enough to get in on Sprint SERO back in the day are probably the only people who doesn't despise their cell phone service providers.
- Xordiem, on 05/22/2009, -2/+13ANY phone! as long as its in the US. pfft
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -3/+14ANY phone?
Yes, any phone IN AMERICA! Buried for omitting that crucial piece of info from the description.
Still, at least I don't have to pay to receive a txt. You must feel like savages doing that. - SystemicThought, on 05/22/2009, -8/+18Or you could, heaven forbid, just NOT text...
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+10And cellphones. And cars. And electricity. And penicillin.
- Acill, on 05/22/2009, -1/+9I have them blocked on my plan as well. Nothing pisses me off more then having to pay for a text I didnt ask to get, and the person paid to send it as well. How is it right that both sender and receiver pay? It would be like you putting a stamp on a letter and then having the mail man tell the person getting the letter that you owe him a stamp if you want him to give you the letter.
- hartley, on 05/22/2009, -0/+8I'm already paying for unlimited data. Why should I pay again to use the same data network?
It would be like your ISP charging you for email. Oh but its ok, for only $10 extra you can send all of the email you want! - palmdoc, on 05/22/2009, -0/+720 cents a pop? You Americans are being had.
- javip, on 05/22/2009, -4/+10i suppose that's a viable solution for people without friends....
- PocketTiTs, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5This has been possible since SMS was first available.
It's funny 6 years ago, wireless carriers were promoting SMS as an alternative to long distance. Of course now they realize people will pay a long distance charge for a text message.
***** all wireless carriers for ass reaming their customers. - Hellahulla, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Texts are practically free in most parts of the world. This tip is useless for anyone but the most unfortunate.
- Wilson, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4I live in a place where the char limit is 140. I am jealous of your 20 extra characters.
- mrpunman, on 05/22/2009, -7/+11Only in America!
- chinolofus, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4t-mobile
- Spetz, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Anyone know the emails for UK telecom firms Vodafone, Orange, O2, etc?
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4haha i pay $10 for a gb of data on my virgin iPhone plan in Australia
so that's $10 000 to fill up that HD - jackal42, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Complete works of Shakespeare; 5mb
- yurimxpxman, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4I pay $0.10 per text.. it pisses me off when people decide to text me 30 times a day because THEY have unlimited texting.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4welcome to 2005!

How to text to email. - Useight, on 05/22/2009, -3/+5I just have texts blocked on my phone. No texts can come in and none can go out. Problem solved.
- DWatch, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Spammers found out about this years ago. This is why I have my phone provider's options set to not accept any text messages originating from emails. Since I did that, over a year ago, I haven't received a single spam text.
- lanzemurdok, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Dugg for dude with glasses. Not douchebag glasses, but awesome i'm a bad ass glasses.
- wewa, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Yep.
That's what I did too.
I'm not a gadget phone whore like the rest of the public.
I don't want/need a blackberry, iphone, and all that other *****.
I've had cell phones since the early days 1991.
I am a tech manager, so its not like my usage is grandma level.
I went from ***** up verizon customer service contract *****, to virgin mobile prepay for the last 3 years (until they kept changing rates for per min and text) and this year on boost.
they got basic phones and they have some growth issues, but hey, if calls and voice is your primary need, and the walkie talkie feature is way more handy than some stupid IM or text on a 2 year contract iphone with dropped ATT calls everyday, IMO.
***** em all.
I had no dropped calls in the 3 years I worked in Tokyo and used 3 different carriers.
U.S. is B.S. - Algan, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Like what? (US example, please)
- ninja0, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_gateway#SMS_gatew ...
- KaiUno, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I'm guessing the provider lets you know you have a "text waiting" or something. Cumbersome, but the only solution I see to that problem. (And they probably refuse to tell you from whom it is as well, just to be jerks.)
- olliholliday, on 05/22/2009, -1/+3disable the ability to run up a bill using voice calls next.
problem solveder. - SystemicThought, on 05/22/2009, -5/+7People got by just fine before text messaging.
- scottc, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2..and that's not a comprehensive list, either. It just covers the major U.S. providers.
- RJ0534, on 05/22/2009, -3/+5I really don't understand all the complaining about the cost of text messaging - I pay $5 a month for unlimited text (and I live in the US).
- SpeedStix, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2works only in the states
- Jeepinator, on 05/22/2009, -1/+3I think they either block your phone from receiving texts at all or you are actually charged without confirmation.
- Acill, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Yeah untill AT&T decides to put something in the TOS that tell its users that its banned from the network or can only be used over wifi.
- Spetz, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I'm on pay as you go. Monthly I spend at most £5.
- ninja0, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_gateway#SMS_gatew ...
More than just US. - ninja0, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1bell canada: txt.bell.ca or txt.bellmobility.ca
fido canada: fido.ca
I've already tested these 2, and they work.
Larger list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_gateway#SMS_gatew ... - ninja0, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Negative. Can't live without. I'm sorry to hear you have no GF or friends.
- punisher101, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Its not just in the U.S. the greedy pig telcomms in Canada are going to nail you with 5 cents per incoming message. It the sickest form of collusion.
Which means if some ahole spammer decides to hit your cellphone with his viagra sms's then you pay for the cost. - ninja0, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Really!? I never heard we were getting that up here... ***** fail. Fido's gonna get an ear full from me.
That would be cool if we were like Japan and had Wifi everywhere.... then used skype on my iphone (which wouldn't be hooked up to a service provider) - SpeedStix, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1This is awesome, the only problem is some phones DO NOT let you type letters when sending SMS's. BS
- Algan, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Yes sir, we are.
- Worldweaver, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1Eep sorry my comment was made in ignorance, I was thinking only from a US standpoint.
Considering the minimal(read almost zero) cost to the cell phone companies there definitely SHOULD be unlimited texting plans available around the world >< - SpeedStix, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1And I have been doing this for the passed year :)
Hurray for BlackBerry Smartphones - SpeedStix, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Have you done this in Canada? There is ONE carrier that provides that. Only problem is they have really out dated phones with NO data plan. Sucks.
- Worldweaver, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2There are plenty of unlimited texting plans offered at affordable rates. If you plan to text on a regular basis it seems like a non issue to me.
