- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -2/+13Yes, resubmitting Dupes is a penchant for superb quality.
Whatever happened to Zaibatsu? Oh, turns out he was a spamming bastard. - benologist, on 12/02/2008, -1/+10Trying to figure what out? How to register a domain and skin the CMS they're using? People manage to do the same thing with blogs and forums every day.
- craighoxton, on 12/01/2008, -5/+11Great site. Although how soon before they get themselves a Mr Babyman?
- waxpoetic, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5This is not a social networking site -- its drudge for financial news with some voting options
- kalvinb, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5Building any site is easy if you expect everyone else to supply the content.
- r0base, on 12/02/2008, -3/+8spam - submitter works for Tip'd
- onimusha115, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5It is going to be a hard market to get into, but some of these tools out today will sure make it easier. I just don't know how you would take on a site like digg or reddit, I think its time for a new idea. Social networks were all the buzz a while ago then facebook and myspace came out on top, almost no sense in competing, I think social news sites have pretty much peaked as well, the big boys are just expanding to take over the niches. But hey, competition is never a bad thing so its worth a shot.
- dharmesh, on 12/01/2008, -2/+5Good, straight-forward advice. I would have liked to see more discussion on other CMS options they considered (as alternatives to pligg and Social CMS).
- godspeed843, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4You should have spent those 6 months redesigning it. That site is busted.
- organicpop, on 12/01/2008, -2/+5Great comments from the idea to development pahse.
- bradspry, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4Have you ever traced? They had a wonderful pattern to trace: Digg.
Here's how to build a Digg-clone in an hour:
http://www.pligg.com
http://www.drigg-code.org
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Easy.ogg - suinmind, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3The most precious resource is the people on the sites. Unfortunately, most social networking sites are blinded by short-term greed. They unintentionally drive users away for a few extra cents.
Given the volume of ads on digg and facebook, I definitely won't visit either without AdblockPlus. - tcardone05, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3So kinda like TechCrunch but with actual content?
- ttamshadbolt, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3how easy is it to get in contact with the original developers?
- valleyvideo, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3Step One: find a great web site.
Step Two: steal that idea and change the name. - known, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Try http://known.slinkset.com/
- msaleem, on 12/02/2008, -9/+11You say that as if that would be a bad thing. Any site in the world would be lucky to have a user as dedicated as MrBabyMan, not to mention penchant for superb quality content.
- haidle02, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1It needs more people but looking good so far.
- johntech100, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1Here is another social site (for tech news only):
http://www.buzzup.com - ncbutters, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1A completely hosted alternative to pligg is http://slinkset.com. It takes about 1 minute to have your social news site created and launched. Some big, new features are coming shortly too.
- Catchpen, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Wrong. They decided to go with SWCMS. www.socialwebcms.com
- daniellelaporte, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2great resource
- zmigliozzi, on 12/02/2008, -2/+3...And let them fail in 21 days.
- rubber2002, on 12/02/2008, -2/+3visit http://www.pligg.com & you can contact pligg developers.
- djfang, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1There are so many of these sites out there, so competition is high or will be high for areas such as finance thanks to this article. But success comes from what fast reliable news that is also "devoid of visual fluff".
- craiginct, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2Wheres the follow-up article?
How to get Google to buy your Social Networking site??? - Catchpen, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Another niche social music site powered by SWCMS. Their niche is for unsigned bands.
http://garagesongs.com - jdelator, on 12/02/2008, -2/+2Is it just me or is the text just restricted to the left 25% of the page?
- JYoungest1, on 12/02/2008, -2/+2Wow more social networking sites. This social network bubble is getting huge, I'm sure its going to pop soon. People honestly cant spend that much time on that many sites.
- rubber2002, on 12/02/2008, -3/+3It is not really an achievment to lauch a site in 21 days. You can launch a site in 1 day too. What is important is to get users & make a community to carry on the conversation. It took us almost 6 months to get some real users for our site http://www.totalpad.com.
- diggdatt, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1Pligg is very buggy.
- jvincent08, on 12/02/2008, -4/+3You'd have to really pull something out of your ass to attract visitors away from sites like Digg and Reddit.
- Barackalypse, on 12/02/2008, -3/+2Simple:
1. Come up with some social media concept, it doesn't have to be particularly revolutionary or even unique, but it should have an unusual name
2. Get Kevin Rose involved
3. Hire a girl to program it, she doesn't have to be particularly talented, but she does need to be somewhat attractive
4. Profit... by selling out to Six Apart - blogfuse, on 12/02/2008, -6/+4Agreed!
- gretchenrubin, on 12/01/2008, -8/+5This is a terrific resource for anyone trying to figure this out.
- D0P3M4N, on 12/01/2008, -9/+5Or you could just be Kevin Rose.
