- rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+183I will get this article forwarded to me by my grandmother next week I guarantee it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+147At least your grandmother knows how to operate a mouse.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 10/11/2007, -9/+68Hate to be that guy, but this way on digg like 4 months ago and made it to front page. Like these exact pictures... was in a nice PP presentation. Digg me down... idc... Buried.
Real Version -> http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/How_thieves_hack_into_an_ATM_slideshow - timusca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+58I also repair and test ATMs for a living... I've personally never seen this problem at all and find it hard to believe someone could pull this off.
However, I do believe it... I've never understood how people SO STUPID can be in charge of their own money. I've had people ask me when the guy was coming back to the machine to pass out money (it was broken and some people think an actual person is inside the machine passing money through the slot). I've also had people punch the machine when they had no money in their accounts and then tell me they had money and that I should give them some out of the machine because the ATM took it from them (I know they had none to start with because I was watching on the rear maintenance monitor and it said "insufficient funds").
Never underestimate the power of stupid people... I've seen them at their worst - so its entirely feasible that they could fall for a scam this simple. - neko, on 10/11/2007, -1/+51Just go to your grandmother's Digg profile and subscribe to her RSS feed. Easy.
- dragunova, on 10/11/2007, -7/+48useful info. this is happening a lot here where i live.
- themoose, on 10/11/2007, -4/+44All you Americans need to watch a BBC programme called "The Real Hustle". It's full scams like these, and a tonnes of others.
You can find it on torrents, warez forums etc.. or maybe it's already being aired in the US and I'm just ignorant. - wastern, on 10/11/2007, -0/+38I'll get it from my mom is about 2 years. Anytime she sends me anything I just copy and paste it into snopes and forward her the link with the giant "false". I'm hoping one of these days she'll pick up on it and either stop sending stuff or at least do some fact checking before spreading bull ***** around

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! You shouldn't be able to have money if you are this retarded. - fober, on 10/11/2007, -10/+36Fortunately all of the ATMs I visit frequently are the "swipe" type, not the "insert card" type.
- LandStander, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22It's almost lunch, I think I'm gonna go get a cheese pizza and a large soda. It's only $10.77. Same as my PIN number.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -6/+27You're telling me that in a majority black city, a majority of the crimes are committed by blacks? Amazing!
- darwin81, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Wow ATM repairmen must like Digg
- gomezfreak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18As someone who tests and repairs ATM's, look for any tampering before using the unit. You can usually see if there is something inserted into the card swipe because, they usually make the device retrievable. Also, if you see a camera that looks out of place, that should tip you off as well.
Those two techniques may not be 100% fool proof, but they could certainly be an asset in a pinch. - XxUNDEROATHxX, on 10/11/2007, -13/+26its an old article...
Friday, December 22, 2006 - Nidy1, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18Why would you leave with your ATM card still in the machine? My first thought would be to ask a BANK EMPLOYEE for help, not the guy standing around waiting for someone to use the machine.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14ATMs are currently being modded with new anti-fish technology onto the card readers. Both of the major manufacturers are upgrading their readers and the mods make it almost impossible to do this anymore.
btw - I'm an ATM tech. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13who the hell enters their pin code when someone is standing RIGHT behind them.... especially at a walk up machine. Another good reason to avoid lone ATM's away from your bank.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10There was a guy here (Australia) arrested for doing something like this yesterday. He posed as an ATM technician, and installed his own device into an ATM. Apparently it was designed to send the numbers to him over the internet (don't know exactly how).
They raided his house and found a whole bunch of false faceplates for ATM's. He was an IT guy apparently :)
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,21937526-2682,00.html - EmileVictor, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15Not to mention the fact that it was stolen from another site, probably for profit through revenue sharing on blogspot. I hate this stuff.
- Tarnum, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The scam is called "Lebanese loop" and is used by crooks everywhere.
The article doesn't tell that the crooks often put a sticker with fake bank phone numbers on the ATM. So if you call, you get a nice lady that asks you for your pin number "for verification". - KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Thats like saying that WWII and its horrors were worth it for the technological advances. No matter how great the gains, malicious behavior like this deserves not even street cred.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7i think the best types of atms are those where you stick in your card and pull it back out immediately, not the ones where the machine sucks it and gives it back to you at the end of the transaction.
the sucking type is vulnerable to tricks like this, jamming (a major inconvenience because if you're alone you don't want to leave the atm by itself in case it spits back out, and at the same time you want to get a bank employee to help you, and don't want to waste time), and is also easier to forget to take your card at the end of the transaction (if you stick it in and pull out immediately on the other hand, the next thing you do is shove it back in your wallet). - Hayaemsay, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8They never deserve it.
- DejectedRobot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Its been posted more than once, and was dugg quite a few times.

http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Dark_Roasted_Blend_How_they_steal_your_card_at_ATM_photos - DealMinded, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Everyone "knows" not to give out their pin, but immediately when confronted with "broken technology", their common sense goes into the fetal position. Here's a piece on social hacking and the broken technology response: http://www.dealminded.com/user/jeff/92/
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6When you're a poor bastard like me, you don't have to worry about this problem..
- ShazerFox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9was this your friend that stole your money?
- heavyd14, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Not all ATMs are at banks. This one kind of looked like it was at a bank though. Then again, you could always call the bank...
- xmkatx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Most of the ATMs I use require swiping the card nowadays...
- noch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5i live in detroit . . . never been mugged once.
QQ much? - gmc74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4About 15 years ago, a group put a fake ATM in a mall in Manchester, CT. All the machine did was read the mag stripe and capture the pin number, then tell the user that it was out of cash.
Pretty genius, until they got caught. - carl201167, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I seem to remember these photos were all staged to show possible PIN fraud? - i.e they're not from a real crime
- MrHoops515, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The Real Hustle shows a more sophisticated method which uses a skimming device (reads magnetic stripe on card and is fitted with a mini camera that reads the pin number). Check it out at http://youtube.com/watch?v=zxFA3FlcOo8
- Whammo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Thanks for the helpful photos! I've been planning to start a new career for a while, but now I have all the training I need!
- LogicBomB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Many bank machines in Canada have added a device that's attached to the slot-loader that prevents this very specifically. Never had a problem either way but it's nice that they jumped on it so quickly (about 6 months ago when this started being a problem).
- withincontext, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I'd let this happen to me just to see the disappointment on that pr*ck's face.
- cdnbambam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Growing pains for Digg
- dollars5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thanks for the tips - in India we have plenty of insert card type ATMs - I will have to watchout for this.
- Solkre, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I'm guessing when this happens for real the crook his face covered, otherwise those ATM cameras wont have a hard time knowing who eventually withdrew the money.
Maybe they should take hig-res photos of anyone doing maxed out withdrawals. - profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3This got passed around at work a few months ago. Being a government workplace, someone got upset about the bad guy being black. There ended up being "diversity training" sessions shortly afterward as a result. I don't work for Dunder-Mifflin, by the way.
- lowbot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I never understood why they would even make ATM machines without the whole capture mechanism. its a lot of things that could potentially go wrong. Whats wrong with just a swipe?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You need cash after hours or on a weekend and there's nobody in the bank to ask for help. Gonna stand there till monday?
- antheo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The best in the US is to use cash back at the grocery store.
- catskin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wanna share a link?
- Emilio8605, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hehe. Thumbs up for the Futurama reference.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This guy actually modified the ATM with his own equipment so it would steal the data, transmit it remotely, and then he could use it without the person even noticing it had happened. As far as they're concerned, it was a perfectly normal transaction, they got their money, they got a receipt, and they still have their card.
- Escamotage, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's real because there are idiots out there that would actually give out their pin numbers to total strangers just because their card is stuck AND THEN leaving the ATM with the card stuck inside the machine.
Buried. - judbeasley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Most machines are getting new card slots that will prevent this. At least my banks and the other ATM machines I've been using recently do.
- qualish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Aaaaaand blocked.
