- wisedude, on 11/18/2008, -5/+105I HATE that its the default for viewing upcoming stories...
- aqzman, on 11/18/2008, -2/+53I usually see two or three stories a week in the recommendation engine which interest me, which is only a small margin of the stories which have made the front page that interest me. I don't think that's too bad though, but maybe that's just me.
- Natitude, on 11/18/2008, -1/+36I never seem to have any stories that actually interest me in the recommendation engine. Maybe a story here and there over the course of the week, but I really feel it gets in the way. I have to click around more to find stories I like because Digg can't do it for me.
- timusca, on 11/18/2008, -0/+29I have the upcoming bookmarked... bypassing the recommendation engine.
- ironeus, on 11/18/2008, -3/+30There's definitely room for improvement, but it's not a bad way to expose a story that would otherwise be in the 3rd or 4th page of 'Upcoming'.
- commentposted, on 11/18/2008, -4/+27I said a long time ago that it sucked, but I got dugg down. Another digg groupthink effect. They just can't handle truth very well.
- migshark, on 11/18/2008, -1/+17Totally agree, it's a pain that you can't turn it off as the default view for upcoming. It should be an opt-out feature.
- mfc5200, on 11/18/2008, -0/+15My current recommendations
1) Bengals vs. Steelers ...
2) UFC ....
3) Prescription drugs, Locklear, DUI...
I don't like sports, and I DESPISE all celebrity news. So much so, that I absolutely refuse to click on links to celebrity gossips to avoid giving them hits for wasting bandwidth. - roastedbagel, on 11/18/2008, -0/+15Most of the sub-categories I click on, it tells me there are no recommendations for me at all :(
- wrmjr, on 11/18/2008, -1/+16Well, it helped me reach this story. I'm not certain if that is a criticism or not.
- darkchild82, on 11/18/2008, -0/+14I wouldn't call it great because I still see the usual names and only ones that have racked up quite a few diggs already. It would be great if ithe 'engine' threw at me a few of the interesting ones that just disappear with 1 digg.
- lolupissed, on 11/18/2008, -2/+15I don't use it, I think its annoying and *****
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -2/+15I'd have to agree with the utterly useless part. Tried it and it looks like an after thought rather than something they spent some time on.
- superxero044, on 11/18/2008, -1/+14waste of pixels
- arjie, on 11/18/2008, -0/+13That's making me wonder. The closest I've gotten to equal to another person is 29%, and I get stories that are ridiculous, and not connected at all. What numbers does everyone else get?
- doiveo, on 11/18/2008, -0/+12I skip it as much as I can. I like diversity and big stories don't happen in my historical path.
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/18/2008, -0/+9Part of the problem is that the Friends List is too generic. I think it would be a lot more useful if you could rate the folks on your friends list in terms of their importance to you. There are some folks on my friends list that I am in lockstep with and would probably digg almost everything they submit or digg, and then there's other folks on my list that are far less important to me. That would then influence the Recommendation Engine, with more-important-friend content floating to the top.
I would love to see that reflected in the comments as well. Right now, all of the friend comments are shaded green; I'd like to see important friends shaded dark green, and less important friends shaded light green. When you're scrolling through a list of a few hundred comments, that would help you to identify the comments you really want to read. - i88gerbils, on 11/18/2008, -1/+10It's a good start. However it's not aggressive enough at weeding out crap. I still have to bury the spam that pops up on there (i.e. top x, x number of, stories).
It seems like the most someone is like me is 10% or so. I click on their name and discover very little in common.
JayCruz's observation is spot on. It pretty much only works if you want to see more of the same keywords/categories that you just dugg.
Also the most annoying feature is that it constantly updates as you go through pages so you get the same crap that you read on the 1st page as the 3rd page. - diggerpleez, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8I can't help but notice your careful omission of your love for prescription drugs, however.
- JayCruz, on 11/18/2008, -1/+9It's just too literal. The recommendation engine is smart but dumb. For example: If I digg something related to Obama, when I go to Upcoming the first 3 pages are political recommendations and everything you could imagine happening that day about Obama.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8Well, your net diggs is positive... I think I'll digg you up.
- xjonnyx134, on 11/18/2008, -7/+14Well done, I came here to post that.
- Mujokan, on 11/18/2008, -0/+7That just means you are a real individual!
- Stomper622, on 11/18/2008, -0/+7I second this.
There should be a way to "turn off" the recommendation engine so that when you want to look at upcoming stories, you don't have to perform an extra click. - IamZed, on 11/18/2008, -0/+7I have no interest in those that share my interests.
- sportbikepilot, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6hate it...
- BigManOnCampus, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6It helps a little bit. I digg maybe 3-5 articles a week from it. In some cases it has recommended articles to me posted by users that I have blocked, which tells me it's not perfect.
It needs work. I think perhaps Digg needs to expand the categorization engine and allow users to "vote" on what the appropriate category for an article should be. This might have been useful in moving political articles out of the other categories into politics where they belonged. The recommendation engine relies on articles being in the right section, and this is just not always the case. - shadus, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6Absolute trash IMO. Come to think of it, is there an option to just never show it? or to default to most diggs? If not there SHOULD be.
- frostbyt, on 11/18/2008, -1/+7My current recommendations
1) Waffles vs Pancakes
2) Standing in a room and tidying up pencils
3) Women like enjoy smelling their own farts and the mens who love them
WTF! - StupotAce, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6I feel like the recommendation engine is counter-intuitive to why I go to the upcoming section. I want to check out the obscure things that I might not otherwise catch. The problem, in my eyes, is that the recommendation engine is based largely off of what other people have dugg and not content. I'm not saying there's a good way to implement a system with content, but that's what would be ideal.
- dcmcderm, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5I usually only digg sports stories and the recommendation seemed to pick up on that. Then I dugg one lone obama victory story. Now all I get for recommendations are election and political opinion stories. Crappy. I don't care about politics.
- jeevesatvic, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5I've found it works quite well for me. I can usually find at least one or two stories per page that interest me. It encourages me to actually look at upcoming stories whereas usually it's too much effort.
- PWoT, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4It'd be fine if they'd give us the option to turn it off and default to the old "Upcoming" list. The fact that we have to click through EVERY SINGLE TIME to see the "real" Upcoming list is what's annoying. Give us the choice!
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4i used it when it first came out for a day or two. I got bored of it quickly after and got tired of it after it started giving me random crap i had no interest in. I don't spend enough hours a day on digg to look at anything besides the frontpage maybe once or twice.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -2/+6I don't use it. I work just fine.
- dmcbride6, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4I think its annoying as hell. WIh they would just remove it.
It pisses me off that when I want to see upcoming stories, it defaults to the retarded recommendation engine. Is there a way to change the default? (or better yet, disable this crap entirely?) - Coffeedemon, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4I'd be happier if they worked on a search engine. The one thats in place here now is a mess for sorting and limiting results.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4Yes, I did... it was actually half the reason for the reply.
- hawksfan03, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3I have that problem too but if I go back to the regular digg stories then come back there are 2 or 3 pages worth. Not sure if that's an error or if those stories actually become 'recommended' in those 30 seconds.
- Tunguska, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3Same feeling.
I reckon it's too complicated and what makes Digg great is the simple formula on the surface. - DaviDTC, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3I stopped using it after I buried every huffintonpost article I saw that was on the front page yet huffingtonpost would be on the top of the list of recommendations. Needs a lot of work.
- Ythan, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3It's about 2% as good as Stumbleupon. I barely ever use it because of this.
- chaosblade77, on 11/18/2008, -1/+4My thoughts exactly.
- nc0onc0o, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2The recommendation engine just discourages me from digging anything. I like the old way of seeing upcoming stories, now I rarely see anything with less than a few hundred diggs. It's pointless to and one more to those stories.
- spicky04, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Meh.
- isuisorisuaint, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2i turned suggestions off on my tivo...i wish i could do the same thing on digg. :/
- billizm, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I will be blunt. I'm sorry, but this feature blows as it is. It seemed like a good idea. Maybe it could still be a good feature, if improved upon.
- Topher06, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Personally, it stinks and I wish I could turn it off for my profile. I think the performance of the site dropped significantly when they implemented this feature and I am compitent enough to know how to find the articles I am interested in with someone holding my hand.
- jesslin, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I actually find it useful... but maybe that's because I'm a relatively new digger
