- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30I absolutely hate how much I pay the local cable company, Rogers, every month for 1) cell phone service, 2) digital cable (w/HDTV), 3) high-speed (600KBps down, 100KBps up) internet access. Thing is, would cost even more to split it up. Argh!
- cadaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23"I pay 20 US dollars a month for 12MB/s up and 12MB/s down, I think it is a fair price."
Are you sure it's not 1.2 mbps for that price? - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20People around here pay a good $110 for comcast HD cable and broadband...
- rishimaharaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1712Mb/s (1.5MB/s) I can understand at that price, but 12MB/s? No way.
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Rogers and Sympatico are both pretty crummy. But at least Toronto gets municipal WiFi next year... hopefully it won't suck! :)
- rishimaharaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I hear you, man. I have home phone, cell phone, digital cable, and broadband service from Rogers, and my Rogers bill is like a freaking mortgage payment!
- Kimi3013, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Seems about right to me, he's from Norway, not the US. Things like this are cheeper there than the US. Not all countires are as bad as the US on prices for the internet.
In the UK I'm paying £15 a month, for 5MB/s. - d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The worst is how can the same company charge $20 for home cable but $90 for the same speed just going to a business.
- djgump35, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I know I will get dugg down for saying this, but I currently don't pay anything for my cable and internet, as I work for Cox Communications. I hope(and I know the company would hate me saying it) that competition will sometime make things better, if it costs as much as it does, at least throw in a lot more content. Cox does ok, but the biggest cable strong point in the pricing structure is that there is no contract.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10VERIZON FIOS is here!
45 bucks for 15 down and 2 up - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I pay 100$ monthly for *standard* cable and broadband.
- cathars1s, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'm going to get modded down and flamed by people who don't understand economics, but there's no price that broadband 'should' cost. There's supply and then there's demand. There's no moral imperative or obligation for anyone to offer broadband at any cost, much less the one that we as consumers desire.
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Not if there is no competing provider. This is called a "monopoly."
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I was paying $125/month to Comcast for cable, HD, DVR, movie channels, and Internet. I called them and told them I was planning on switching to Dish and DSL and they offered to knock $40/month off my bill. I'm pretty satisfied now, especially as DSL isn't even available at my address--best 15 minute phone call I ever made. I still hate Comcast with a passion, and I'm sure they have no love lost for me either after I got them in trouble with the FCC but that's a story for another day.
- v0id, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Surewest here. Fiber setup: 10 up 10 down 29.99 month give them $10 more a month and it goes to 20up 20down
- quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Whatever the cost, value for money seems to be going down - as ISPs put tighter and tighter usage restrictions on the packages we pay for.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thats an extremely fair price compared to the 45 a month I pay for 7MB/s down and 1.5MB/s up! Unfortunatley the DSL service over here is pretty much crap, and for 5MB/s down it cost just as much as cable, so what's the point in switching.
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Something is worth only what someone else is willing to pay for it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You mean 12mbps? MB is Megabytes, a unit of storage. Transmission is recorded in bits.
- linuxrebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One of the nice parts about living in the Sunnyvale/Santa Clara/Cupertino area is ...... Free WiFi. It's about 768 down 128 up, no speed demon but for 99% of what I do. It'll play. I got tired of 59 a month for Cable internet, not ever getting above 1.544 down (usually 768 or so) and the hassle of being tied to one room (for the wireless router) (Can't wire the walls ... I rent) Now wireless. On or off my home net. and I don't have to worry about huge bills .... It's Free!.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I pay $45 for 8/mbps (I only get upto 1mb). Also I pay $39.99 for cable tv. = $85 in total. O_o that is a lot, lol I would not mind paying $20/month for 8/mbps real speed. and $25/month for cable tv =) Hopefully in the future in couple of years this would be possible!
- IpodCrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BellSouth isn't doing a single thing at all, It's the only DSL service I can get in my area (Chattanooga, TN).I get 256k down for 24.95/month. It's crap, I download at about 27kbps. If only Verizon or AT&T were here. I would jump on either one of them in a sec.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've got BellSouth here in SC at $49 a month for 6Mb/s DSL (free static IP, too). Which isn't terrible considering the options available. However, I ALSO have to have a stinkin' land line which is another $40 a month to even GET DSL. I'm extremely satisfied with the service and BellSouth leaves me alone about running my server and everything else. I just wish they'd offer naked DSL. I looked into switching to Comcast, but after factoring in a static IP and DVR (crappy DVR at that - I do loves my DirecTiVo), and all the other crap, I wouldn't be saving any money and I'd lose the phone line. So until FIOS gets here I'm kinda stuck.
- Falconwing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I pay about $50 a month for 4 static IPs, 10/10 Mbit uncapped. It's a bit pricey for Sweden, but the premium is for the static IPs so I can run services.
One of the typical deals here is $40 a month for 100 Mbit. Some households have a full gigabit, but that's still rare. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow.... I only get 1536k down/384k up for $20 a month...
- robohoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3$15 for 1.5mbps/384kbps....Seems like a good deal...Wish the speed was kinda higher.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4lucky bastards. I pay $70 for 2048/2048 dsl...
- rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Well that is funny. I pay 79 bucks a month for comcast cable internet and cable tv (that is, 3 meg down, 768k up, and digital tv with on demand). Good deal, i would say.
- rushfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I pay $12.95 for 1.5mpb/s down and 365kbp/s up. Capitalism... ya gotta love it.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"Cox does ok, but the biggest cable strong point in the pricing structure is that there is no contract."
Replace the word "contract" with "competition", and you'll have it right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"i HATE corporations so much"
So stop whining, stop giving these corporations you "HATE" your money or your parents' money, and move to where you can get a mom and pop ISP. It's called personal responsibility. Vote with your dollars. - Kruncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I pay $40 a month for 256K/128K cable! There "business" package is $100 for 1.5M/768K.
Small towns suck. - CameronHigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the worst thing that the Cable companies do is lie to people about how much speed they need. They (Charter) upgraded me 4 times in 18 months without telling me. I am a single user, I dont DL THAT much, so i dont need 5mbs service. But I think that they lie to non tech-saavy people by telling them that they will surf faster with an upgrade from 3 to 5, for example.
- terinjokes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you gotta love the neighbour's J/K though i wish MY wifi made it to THIS side of the house...
- microsoftpwner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, mediacom did the same thing for me. I called up and told them I was gonna cancel Internet and Cable TV and they slashed my monthly bill in half for 6 months. Now I'm paying $60 total for cable and TV, even that seems a little high.
I get download at 600kbps, upload at 30kbps. It still doesn't seem worth it. - chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I pay $98 (including taxes) with Comcast right now to get high speed internet and standard cable (50-60 channels).
I cannot wait for FIOS to show up here, especially when FIOS TV arrives. It is in the next town over, so it can't be too long. I read somewhere that cable rates dropped 20-30% when FIOS entered town.
Imagine that eh? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This article really misses the point and doesn't apply to many people, especially tech savvy dig users. I'm constantly downloading and frequently uploading. Not in bursts but nearly all the time.
It's people like me that get way more for our $60, 15/2 connections. All the people out there that have broadband just so they can check their email and play checkers on-line are actually subsidizing us demanding broadband users.
That's why my ISP (Optonline) caps uploads and Usenet downloads for too fast/too constant. It's cheaper for them to lose a pissed off, capped customer than have one guy using hundreds of dollars of bandwidth. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My family pays something like $80/month for PSTN (with CallerID) and 3Mbit/30Kbit ADSL (the fastest availible)
The DSL company has ***** QoS (the only modems that the contract allows us to use fry themselves with any sort of electrical storm in the area... w/ or w/o surge protection.), and the Cable company doesn't even advertise speeds... it's just "faster than DSL".
I am a prime example of the amount of competition there is in the broadband market. I could get Sattellite, but there are 5 very old (and healthy) trees that would need to be cut down for a clear view of the southwest sky.
EDIT: I'm in the USA... PA to be exact. - fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jersey City
Comcast Cable ( 6Mbps/384Kbps ) + Comcast TV ( with HD ) = $115
Phone = Verizon = $50
What a rip off. I pay nearly $165 for all these.
I'm switching soon to Vonage - $10-$15 to save $30-$40 - uziq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$17.99 for 3000/512 from AT&T.
which comes to around $37.00 after phone line charges + taxes.
Anything more than that is a ripoff. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I think the REAL reason has to do with the AA's. After all, do you think they'd be too happy if Joe Blow had a 100Mbit pipe at his disposal? Hell we'd all be downloading Blu Ray and HD-DVD images in mere minutes!
- majinboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not really, you're just paying $40 AUD more than our americian friends for:
1. Lower speed DSL line
2. Much less content on cable tv. and its not even hdtv. - SelfAppointedMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm in kentucky paying $35 a month for 132.3 KB/sec down and 26.3 KB/sec up bellsouth dsl. The speeds are fine with me but the customer service is for ***** and the dsl goes out with every little rumble of thunder in the distance. If the forecast calls for storms or rain I can pretty much count on not having any internet for awhile.........That $35 is on top of the $70 I pay for my land line.......and since I live in the sticks there's no cable tv service of any kind out here so I'm paying like $98 a month for Directv
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2/me moves to Japan
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, around here that 'metered line' sets you back $35 on top of DSL charges. Thus, 768/512 ADSL cost around $80 a month. That's what you get in a small town.
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I currently have 6mbit DSL from AT&T for $27.99/month. You do of course need a landline...so you have to pay about $10 for a metered line. So for $37.99 I get 6mbit, that is about as cheap as it gets in the US. As a "benefit" you get unlimited incoming calls too ;)
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in Brazil. I currently pay the equivalent of $30 USD/month for 128kbit/s (though this was mysteriously upgraded to 224... I'm not complaining). In my city, I'd have to pay $513 USD/month for 2mbit/s (which is the fastest available at the moment). I cry every night.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was in Las Cruces last month on business. I feel sorry for you, dude.
- malhtiek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am paying $120/month for Comcast with HD cable and 6mbps down
- ydt89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well im with comcast and i get 768kbps down, and almost 3mbs up.. i think we pay 60-70$ a month.. its worth it.
