How do you beat YouTube?
guardian.co.uk — An army of clones hope to topple YouTube as the biggest video site on the web. "But how will they succeed?" asks Casey McKinnon. "The choices for a creator in this wild west of new media can be bewildering. How does somebody break YouTube's grip? What are the things that web video producers want from a website?"

- Takalth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1a pair of ***** is porn, unless it's a medical video or something like that. Or do you think most men generally don't have lustful thoughts when looking at them.

- majinosity, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7some of the best videos from YouTube are being pulled because of copyright "violations" ... these producers are moving elsewhere, most notably DailyMotion.com
- masamunecyrus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That's exactly what I was going to say. It's one thing to remove entire episodes of anime, that's understandable. But everything from AMVs to most-definitely-fair-use-videos like the Naruto Abridged series (which consists of random, edited clips of the Naruto anime redubbed in a parody fashion) have been removed recently, and they continue to remove even more ridiculous things.
If the only thing I can find on YouTube is stupid videos of kids ranting, emo crap, and skateboarding dogs, I likely won't visit YouTube, anymore. - masamunecyrus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Another notable thing is the bizarre hypocrisy of YouTube and the companies removing content from it.
For instance, many anime parodies and AMVs are removed from YouTube, yet the anime licensing companies encourage and sponsor AMV contests and conventions.
And what about music videos? The RIAA once considered music videos to be purely promotional, but now they consider them copyright infringement. And what about YouTube? Did YouTube forget their vow long ago to have "every music video ever created" on their site?

- stuarttt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Easy. Better quality, longer videos, and hosted on a small island with it's own jurisdiction far from the clutches of US Copyright.
- miseducation, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think those two previous comments are right, the only way to steal some traffic from youtube is to have either porn (cough, youporn.com, cough) or pirated content. Someone will figure out a way of hosting videos in a P2P manner than doesn't incriminate the site and it'll be filled with every video you could ever want to see.
Other than that, just give up already. This issue's been MySpaced, meaning: the size of their network is directly proportional to the incentive you have for using the site. Searching elsewhere means you probably wont find what you want. No video quality, licensed content or fancy feature will ever change that. - in2deep, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Good advice!

2. Maintain good speeds.
3. Unintrusive ads / layout.
4. Relaxed copyright policy. :-p
Of course, both 1 + 2 together and the popularity from 4 makes it pretty hard to muster a bandwidth competitive to Google's.- FTLJohnson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I suppose this falls under layout, but youtubes comments section is TERRIBLE. The threading makes zero sense unless you are in "view all comments" mode.
Even then, there is no functionality to edit your comments... and no way to delete your own comments even...- Piedramente, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0For a second there I thought you were talking about digg's comment system.
For me, any sort other than "by date" destroys the threading (by design? still cruddy)

- RobertBogley, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Get rid of the adverts
- Jesusridesabike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1adverts?
- RobertBogley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I mean the ads they are bringing in.. given the choice between youtube and adverts or other site no adverts - there's no choice.

- Beautyon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Stop banning Videocompiler
- UnknownCzar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that would save youtube for me. still have no clue why they banned him..
- cr4ft, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It never ceases to amaze me how so many people (such as the author of this article) know the tricks of the trade to beating something so vast (such as YouTube) but instead of doing it themselves, decide to write about it.
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Thats because they don't know how to beat it. They just want you to think so you will view their website and in turn make them a little money. Beating youtube would be very difficult at this stage in the game (millions of dollars), youtube will survive until people grow tired of video blogging OR youtube ***** up really big and turns everybody off.
- undetected, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's cause there's an ocean of difference between knowing the tweaks needed by an existing site to make it better, and getting funding, hiring people, developing the product, and building the brand, and a lot of other intangibles needed to actually beat the current market leader.
- brusty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Better Audio & Video Quality.

- Rethcir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3You don't.. join them.
Seriously, why BOTHER? it's an uphill ***** battle to say the least. - MrSteamTank, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Beating youtube will be easy. The ridiculous quantity of Naruto music videos will drown out all other content soon enough. Just make sure you're new video service is "anime music video free" and everybody else will move to your site.
- pumpedvideo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21) allow porn

- funkytaco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1We host http://www.dave.tv in our datacenter, but I think the name is horrible. Plus it's got alot of ads on the front page posing as content.

- tim11198, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Have unobtrusive banner ads, and give the submitters a share of the ad revenue generated from the views of their content. If you give the people a chance to make money, they will come.
- sorensilk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1youtube is going to destroy itself if they go too far with their current ad idea. They just started doing overlays of ads on top of some videos. People will abandon youtube real quick if that goes too far.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/ad_tastic/youtube-to-run-ads-on-top-of-clips-292122.php - funkytaco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Time will tell, but I bet whoever beats YouTube will be serving HD quality files on Internet2.
- Duncan3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21. Wait for YouTube to add ads.
2. They do it!
3. Profit! - amoore260, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The story touches on some good points but misses the big picture. The next YouTube will be more community driven.some of these points were listed in the story, Let me explain how.
Policing copyright laws are going to be a deal breaker for any video site. But allowing the community report copyright infringement with a button on each video would save the site a lot of league trouble. When the button is clicked the video would be put into a que where it could be reviewed by the sites staff and then taken down if it violates copyright. Members of the community that report numerous copyright violations that are accurate should be paid for their time and effort too. IP tracing should be used verify users are not reporting them selfs and making a paycheck.
A smother comment system, similar to diigs should be used too.
Revenue sharing with all users (this is a no brainer)
Users keep all the rights to there videos
A Creative Commons section with download.
An educational section similar to iTunes University for educational use that can be password protected.
A pay service with options without the watermarking (larger file sizes too)- Takalth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Your last line nailed my point. Allow a pay service for large and high-res videos. My biggest problem with watching stuff on youtube has always been the fact that you can either see a tiny screen or a pixelly one, and the paying for the privilege would solve the bandwidth and storage costs of high-res.
The rest of your post was quite good, too. A lot better than all of the people saying "allow porn" as if plenty of sites don't already do that.
- Takalth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Your last line nailed my point. Allow a pay service for large and high-res videos. Thank me when you watch UFC 74 this weekend on it cause you didn't want to pay for the 40 bucks the event- cr4ft, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1UFC 74 is going to kick ass!
- SirBotchness, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Google owns it and unless someone can beat google they'll never touch youtube.
- amoore260, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Google is losing at voip. Skype built a better mouse trap. yes, google can be betten......

- amoore260, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Google is losing at voip. Skype built a better mouse trap. yes, google can be betten......
- dew2fever, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I don't see how people intend to beat something that works great, it would be like saying, "since seat belts work so well, lets invent something else that's...just like better!" YouTude.com was one of the start up companies like all the others that are trying to compete with them now. eason YouTude.com works so well is do to the lack of interaction, people post and view videos, its that simple.
- amoore260, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They did, its call airbags and its an upgrade to make it better!!!!
- brwright, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3stage6.com (from divx) is my choice, great amount of quality vids
- AdHaR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0"Cyberbullying is becoming common practice on many popular sites like YouTube, MySpace and Digg - and often just flagging up abusive users isn't enough."
- tmazza23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The micro-niche sites will begin to gather more of an audience. Sites like http://www.fora.tv (a bit of a bias and plug because I work for them) or http://www.scivee.tv/ are good examples of micro and hyper-niche outlets. I think that we'll start to see an extension of channel offerings, similar to when Cable and Satellite television extended the offerings of traditional TV. These more focused channels will continue to pull some users away from YouTube, but that Goliath will be hard to "beat."
- Leo21k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thats easy. Just allow bootlegged tv shows and anime until you get sued. Thats how Youtube became so popular.
- Raptor007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2How about an IQ test before you allow people to post comments?
- dimplemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I like MetaCafe a lot. Their interface, videos, overall look and feel.
- MrSteamTank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Great soft-core pornography too. Personally I prefer www.flurl.com
Not only is their tons of videos their is also tons of the most hardcore porn you could imagine. It's a win win!
- MrSteamTank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Great soft-core pornography too. Personally I prefer www.flurl.com
- pyrates, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Youtube's bandwidth bills are so high right now. They need ads on the site in order to help pay for the bandwidth. You can upload the content for free their. Unless content makers want to start paying for having their content on youtube, the licenses agreement isn't going to change anytime soon. Ad dollars need to be profitable with the amount of bandwidth that youtube uses, and so far, I don't see that happening. So it has to come from elsewhere.
- Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Its easy to beat youtube.
Step 1: Wait for youtube/google to start embedding adverts in their movies (DONE!)
Step 2: Run a site exactly like youtube that doesn't embed adverts in their movies (DONE!)
Step 3: All of youtube's now ex-users come to your site. - Kwipper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How do you beat YouTube? (Or improve upon the existing model) It's easy!
a.) Keep the same features as YouTube.
b.) Add higher quality video options.
c.) Add and option where if you upload a HD Sized video (720 and/or 1080), YouTube will automatically re-render the HD video in lower quality formats (it's all about choice)
d.) Let the user adjust in their settings which size video quality they want to view
e.) Adopt h.264
f.) ????
g.) Profit!!! -
