- chard, on 02/06/2008, -2/+78Maybe its a she?
- CraigJ, on 02/06/2008, -5/+74Not that there's anything wrong with that...
- Firehed, on 02/06/2008, -2/+68Not all love is sexual.
- jesperhh, on 02/06/2008, -2/+60I'd totally hit a female BitTorrent Tracker Owner :P
- hasansexy, on 02/06/2008, -3/+59It would be funny if he accidentally signed the letter with something like:
John Mayfield
TorrentHeaven.co.uk - bfron110, on 02/06/2008, -1/+49I always took an easier approach to hiding from illegal online activities.
/register everything under an ex-girlfriends name. - ScornForSega, on 02/06/2008, -44/+87FTA:
"A few of my staff I love, I really do, they’re great guys but I can never let them know my true identity, which is sad for me because maybe we could become more to each other than just text on a screen."
That's um.. a little gay. - ross., on 02/06/2008, -0/+40Could be a tranny..MPAA wouldn't see that coming.
- techlyc, on 02/06/2008, -1/+37You know, based on the vocabulary the author used, and since most people type long pieces much the way they speak out loud, I was going to assume he was from the U.K. I ruled out U.S., as he said "not in my own country, and I’d never put a server in a country where my worst anti-piracy enemy is located". Using words like "jigsaw" instead of "puzzle" can be a dead giveaway.
The way you write online, much the way you speak out loud - the vernacular, slang, sentence structure and spelling - are like a fingerprint or a signature that you cannot change without lots of rewiring. It can definitely make it a bit easy to pinpoint someone's locale.
HOWEVER!! The admin is rather smart, as there is a sentence near the beginning "This article is entirely consistent with the admin’s message, but at his insistence, it has been re-written by TorrentFreak."
Anonymity is priceless. - Rayor, on 02/06/2008, -7/+38You would strike a female? How dare you! I challenge you to fisticuffs sir!
- lolinyerface, on 02/06/2008, -3/+29???
- centran, on 02/06/2008, -0/+26The person did say you should lie about your name, age, marital status and sex. However this person did say it is stupid to pretend to be a female because you get more attention.
Maybe it is a she lying and saying she is a guy! - inactive, on 02/06/2008, -6/+30I am Spartacus.
- UberNick, on 02/06/2008, -4/+27Tom, I logged in just to digg you down. I'd like to know where your "moral compass" is adjusted. The idea of cultural knowledge being shared without any restrictions by geography or cost is the stuff utopian novelists write about. It's the idea that libraries and universities were founded on. If anything, open P2P networks are the great moral success of our generation.
Somehow claiming this breaks archaic, untranslatable copyright laws is questionable- and leads to no conclusion about morality. And to say it 'screws' people is insane-- most artists would kill for that kind of exposure. The only ones being harmed are the backwards distribution companies that have been slow to adapt and no longer offer any useful service. Who needs distributors when it can be done free and limitlessly?
Your moral compass should point towards the common good, towards open communication, and towards piracy. - lolinyerface, on 02/06/2008, -3/+24"OMFG NOTHER MAN LOOK AT ME, I IS NOT GAY!!?#@" - ScornForSega
- cquilliam, on 02/06/2008, -0/+20I don't know about anyone else, but I got the perception that it was a girl. Or maybe that's what he wanted us to think. Or maybe she was telling us about how she hides her gender so we would think he was trying to be a she.......ok, i'm confused.
- OMGIAMTHEMAN, on 02/06/2008, -5/+21just because congress legislates against and creates civil penalties punishing something, does not make it "immoral" - there is definitely a moral defense to piracy, this thread isn't the place to get into it again.
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+16"Security experts" already know these tricks.
- Kenzan, on 02/06/2008, -0/+15Oh..yeah....you'll never get caught *that way.*
- ChaosMotor, on 02/06/2008, -0/+15That's how I always told friends to get away with plagiarism - if you INSIST on doing it, rewrite the article in your own words, that way nothing can be proven.
- counterplex, on 02/06/2008, -0/+15What were you before taking off the glasses? 8-{| ?
- sirhomer, on 02/06/2008, -1/+16Remember just ~60 years ago it was pretty much illegal to be Jewish, Gay or Roma in Germany, punishable by death.
Illegality != Immorality - oldhick, on 02/06/2008, -3/+18Your morally superior position is what prevents a fair discussion. You live in a world that is fading with every moment that passes. The reality that is shaping up, just out of your reach is one that involves the complete and unconditional sharing of information and ideas. You can hold tight to your thoughts on copyright law and be confident that you are morally superior to everyone around you. But in reality, you're a dinosaur and you're going extinct. Those that are defining new distribution methods and revenue streams will create the models that businesses will use in the future.
But heck, keeping up with technology and how it revolutionizes both business and personal interactions is a real pain in the ass. Its much easier to sit back and keep yelling "yeah but you're stealing!" The world is a little bit larger than that. - foxter, on 02/06/2008, -2/+16Tom, I think it is you who should adjust your moral compass. You admit to pirating "stuff" and yet you rail against it. That, my friend, is two wrongs (illegal activity and hypocrisy). The person you replied to only has the wrong of illegal activity on his record--no hypocrisy. This is yet another take on why you're wrong, Tom.
Note: For the sake of argument, I'm assuming that piracy is wrong. - SSCrow, on 02/06/2008, -0/+13Amazing. you've managed to determine which half of the population that individual falls in.
- Klonopin, on 02/06/2008, -6/+19They have more balls than you do, that's all.
- leerayIG88, on 02/06/2008, -3/+16aww. Don't be sad.
- adooga, on 02/06/2008, -1/+12Am I the only one who thinks that torrentfreak never actually interview anyone at all?
Interesting article though. - KraftDinner101, on 02/06/2008, -2/+13What?????
- oldhat, on 02/07/2008, -0/+11There's plenty of stuff that's more than a little gay...wrestling is totally flaming for example...but love for your compatriots is not one of them. Even the most homophobic amongst us can announce love for their brothers and comrades without shame. You would be lucky if another man could love you, fight for you, die with you.
- ICanRead, on 02/06/2008, -0/+10Never post in the comments section of tracker admin security Digg threads.
- Kenzan, on 02/06/2008, -4/+14I like this rule:
"Don’t Break the Law!
Running a tracker is a gray area in most country’s laws but I try to stick to some basic guidelines to not show blatant disregard for things that are surely illegal in most places. Under no circumstances would I seed any copyright works on my own tracker. I saw an admin recently who had uploaded 4tb of warez and was showing off his stats for all to see. Why take the risk?
If you get a DMCA type takedown request, take the torrent down! The Pirate Bay guys are going crazy at me now I guess (they’re entitled to hold their own style of course!) but I see no point in doing anything unnecessary to annoy copyright holders, especially us small guys who don’t have many resources." - Daggity, on 02/06/2008, -1/+11No, I am Spartacus!
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -4/+13Step 25:
Write an article detailing your security measures online so security experts have an easier time finding you - Ribbed4U, on 02/06/2008, -0/+10That's why I use LOLCAT speak. Nobody will know who I am! Oh ***** I just gave away my secret. :(
- toxicityj, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10yeah I'd totally seed her torrent.
- ortucis, on 02/07/2008, -1/+11Yeah, that's why they are called 'security experts', not 'George's Bushes'.
- Icyfenix, on 02/06/2008, -3/+12Our LIVES?
Well... I guess "1001 Medical References EBOOK" actually saved my mom when she had that stroke...
So yea. - Bladwor, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9Sorry, fellas, but I'M Spartacus.
- ross., on 02/06/2008, -0/+8Seems like too much of a pain in the ass than I could ever be bothered with...good for him/her for taking one for the team.
- Flame15, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8internet pirates using internet ninja's tracker? *head asplodes*
- UberNick, on 02/06/2008, -4/+11The only entitlement is an assumption that once you create or copy an infinitely reproducible work, you can prevent others from doing the same.
- BossKeyy, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7Sir? Maybe it's a she?
- counterplex, on 02/06/2008, -0/+7Looks like that tracker owner's done with his mission here :)
- foxter, on 02/06/2008, -0/+7An internet pirate perhaps?
ninjas > pirates - ccheath, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6at the beginning it said that none of it was direct quotes... that the interview was re-written by torrentfreak as to not give away and identifying details, but you're on the right track with your thinking... could be Australian just as easily as brit
- SLockhart, on 02/06/2008, -3/+9If I choose to take things from Hollywood and major software publishers without paying then why would I pay these guys? Kinda karmic right?
