- PeterFile, on 12/04/2008, -0/+46The description is a bit misleading isn't it? It makes it seem as though you don't have to download anything to bypass the restrictions, but you do.
- dhughes, on 12/04/2008, -2/+23"There is nothing to download or install..."
FTA "1. Go to hotspotshield.com and download Hotspot Shield (direct download link)
2. Extract the package contents and run the setup file." - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+16Yes...the app mentioned in the article.
- crash013, on 12/04/2008, -0/+15It's a VPN.
- replaysMike, on 12/04/2008, -3/+15so it's a proxy server?
- Bermygoon, on 12/04/2008, -4/+16
'The requested video can not be viewed from your region'
You tempt me with your wonderful fruit only to deny me again and again!!
I hate you internets!!! - xeno439, on 12/04/2008, -3/+11Call me old fashioned, but I would rather just download the torrent and have much better quality.
However, there have been some cases of non-TV clips linked to on the front page of Digg that I haven't been able to watch because of not living in the U.S. I guess I will have to remember this article of that happens again. - tux11, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7been use that site for 2 weeks and like it better then youtube !
- mescad, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7For most shows, you get one 5-10 second ad at the beginning and one 30-second ad during each commercial break. You can use bittorrent if you want completely ad-free TV, but Hulu provides instant-on no-download programming, which I think is worth a few seconds of ads. Also, Hulu lets you vote thumbs up/down on each ad, which will lead to more relevant ads.
- nicosFR, on 12/04/2008, -3/+9anything like that for OS X ?
- utnow, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I'm with ya for the most part... but there are lots of times when I just wanna see a show and don't want to spend an hour downloading it (and in my case another 30minutes converting it into something I can watch in my bedroom via AppleTV). Just easier to Hulu it. :)
- Niels, on 12/04/2008, -2/+8it says: "There is nothing to download or install"...
then it tells you to download and install shiat??? wtf....
it might work, but this is false advertising.. lol - ScottMcIntyre, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6This is great. There's been many a time on Digg that I've received a message telling me a video is unavailable on a particular site. I look forward to trying this out.
- freezerburn666, on 12/04/2008, -2/+7virtual private network. proxies won't work, too slow to stream...
- rob89, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5so cool, will check it out!
- animeguru, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Nothing to install!! *
* Except for this VPN client that tunnels through our server. - benexor, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5ads from hulu don't even show up, just the 30 second long warning to disable ad blocking.
- Tychee, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Finally!! Can't wait to check it out!
- Magnolit, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5Be advised, don't log into your personal apps/web services when using Hotspot Shield. I wouldn't risk packet sniffing.
- sullenpenguin, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4I tried both and the only one I had some success with was Hotspot Shield, it would load up a program on Hulu and start playing but after about 10 seconds the video would keep skipping / buffering. Seems the proxy connection wasn't fast enough for Hulu - I'm located in Ireland on an 10Mb line so connection speed wasn't the issue :(
- Nerf, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3yup... im warry of installing things like this locally you never know who's watching or who built the app.
- boodog, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3For anyone complaining about watching commercials ...please!
They do need to make money ...after all it is a business and obviously you crazy love their business! Why not watch a 10 to 20 second commercial and in turn help pay for the next show you will enjoy?
I download a ton lesss now! thanks to the MPAA people for catering to this onnce pirate - circuitblood, on 12/04/2008, -2/+5SLOW AS HELL
- kouchan21, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Something for my linux box?
- springo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3It is slow and disconnects all the time.
- rafe101, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4I found an article suggesting OpenVPN for us Linux users.
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Install_OpenVPN_on_Ubun ... - nicosFR, on 12/04/2008, -2/+5Thanks... got misled by the screenshots and was to lazy to click on the link :)
- eugenesucks, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I have the same problem with Hotspot Shield except I'm in the UK and have a 20Mb line. It works occasionally but tends to be too slow to stream.
- robev, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Wow the caption is extremely misleading, it is copied from the DESCRIPTION of Hulu, not the explanation for those abroad.
"There are two free apps that can help you access Hulu, Sling and any other US-only website even if you’re located outside the United States. These are Hotspot Shield and UltraSurf. Both are free and very easy to setup. "
I tried Hotspot Shield and learned that it has a bandwidth cap. - sanriver12, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3hulu blocks the servers used by this apps. at least i know ultrasurf doesn´t work anymore with hulu
hotspot shield doesnt work with vista x64 - yacks, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I'd rather listen to a 15 second ad than a 30 second screen of nothing though.
- Neiva, on 12/09/2008, -0/+1i have them on my bookmarks
- sbussy89, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1"There is nothing to download or install," except the program that allows you to do it, which you have to download and install lol
- hahahafr, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1It doesn't work for Steam games.
VPN or not Valve see you are not in the US and charge you 54.99€ + VAT for Bioshock, instead of 19.99$. *****. - jodido, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1HS Shield as someone already noted won't install properly/run on V64 even in XP mode; neither does, apparently, UltraSurf, since Hulu still thinks I'm outside the US. Could this be because I don't have access to our building's router?
- RoboDonut, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I don't mind the ads for the most part, but there have been a few times when it has annoyed me. For instance, I was watching Mushi-shi, only to have the calm, folksy intro music and picturesque scenes of serene forests interrupted by a Hungry-Man Dinner commercial. The entire page was replaced by bright yellow and red Hungry-Man Dinner logos and a commercial with a bunch of construction workers started playing. At the end of the commercial, the narrator preceded to shout at me "EAT LIKE A REAL MAN -- EAT HUNGRY-MAN", whereupon I was dropped right back into my very unmanly animu.
- Scorps111, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Same hotspot sheild worked perfectly about a month ago, now its just like dialup
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Like iplayer you mean????????
- Scorps111, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Been using hotspot shield for ages, but recently it has become uber slow, you cant watch the shows without it skipping every two secconds :(
- thomas040, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2the cool thing is that it doesn't show the commercials, just a 30 second break with nothing.... less annoying than the ads I find...
- brandonelliott, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1***** sean avery what a prick
- dsoldier, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Awesome find for me, since I am in Germany until next August. I hope this works!
- FlyingPhotog, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Here, take my sloppy seconds. =)
- inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1They both suck since they are both USA-only.
- soondot, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Yes. Hotspot Shield works for OS X.
- macateeny, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Watched the (m)apple spoof on hulu using Hotspot shield nice one!
http://www.hulu.com/watch/46753/the-simpsons-mappl ... - yacks, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1most of the time when you get that you are losing out because a lot of hulu ads are only 15 seconds long.
- brandonelliott, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2in canada and neither of those work for me
- soondot, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I think what they mean as that Hulu or Sling--just as video services--don't require any download like Graboid, TVU Player, or Sopcast. Unfortunately, though, Hotspot Shield doesn't work on 64-bit systems. Those who are having trouble with the installation (with messages such as TAP VPN Error), or with compatibility with websites such as abc.com or nbc should browse the Hotspot Shield troubleshooting blog: http://tinyurl.com/5wkmme
Hotspot Shield is by far the best free vpn, however. Whereas AlwaysVPN and Ultrasurf come in a close 2nd and 3rd as alternatives to Hotspot Shield: http://tinyurl.com/6eloly -
