- MacLeod, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16How about this instead...
http://www.everythingusb.com/trackstick.html - SillyRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Track anyone with a cell phone: Dial their number and call them. Boom, instant tracking.
- FrugalFreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I got a plan, buy a truckload bunch of phones with business sponsorship, give em away in my town and sell track data to businesses to analyze where customers are shopping.meanwhile getting patent and then sell my company to Google. make em listen to ads before dialing and also make the ringtone an ad.
- Madh2orat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This is pointless and unworkable, for several reasons:
1)You have to buy the 100 dollar cellphone, ya, i suppose you could do that.
2)Buy ANOTHER 10 bucks in data transfer
3)Pay for this persons cell phone, Pray they dont make any log distance calls.
4)Give them the cellphone, Theyd need to not have one yet, and, theyd need to accept it.
5)Create two accounts and add as friends, is this person able to see where you are then as well?
If this was a work solution, it might be feasable, "Significant Other" possible, good friend? doubt it, especially as a practical joke. - tower31, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You better pay in advance....Or Sprint wont help you find a damn thing......
- davetd02, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Inaccurate / misleading headline.
It's "How to track anybody by using THIS cell phone", not a generic ability to track anybody who happens to be using any cell phone. - soft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Didn't realise you needed GPS for this. BBC's Click programme covered something like this a month or so ago, just sign the phone up for one of those tracking services and you can watch where the phone goes based on it's proximity to the transmitters. It works best in cities because of the increased density of the transmitters.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7$100 is quite expensive for a prank...
- Exile5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can't trust someone, why be with them?
- spy1325, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4just buy a no contract boost mobile phone online for 49.99, it comes with 10 bucks prepaid. and then either buy or borrow a data cable and install the mogologo software. you dont need to pay 100 bucks for a starter kit. only about 65$ for phone and data cable, and you can use up the prepaid card they give you and buy more if u really want to. and if you already have a nextel or boost mobile phone with GPS enabled, you can just install the software and go from there.
- wai_xing_ren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ever seen Disorganized Crime? Imagine tracking every police car in town instead of disabling them. I bet these phones cost less than bombs, and it would make one hell of a game of Pac-Man.
- whizzbang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was half thinking of using something like this to track a police traffic camera truck that is always parked outside where I work. Could be good to check where the speed camera is before I head off in the morning. Not sure its worth the jail time if I get caught! also I'd have to figure out some way of attaching it that would get its charge form the truck battery.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There was a phone company in Iceland, named SÃminn. That allowed you to track your friends or parents to track there children, two and a half years ago.
Then there were no phones with gps, they just used 3 GSM transmitter to send signal to the phone and then they calculated the signal strength from each transmitter to determine the position of the phone.
I think that's how they did it, if I remember it right :/
But this gps thing is much more efficient :P - Hexxagonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it'ld be awesome for parents who want to track their kids since THEY buy the phone already
headline == dumb; idea == cool - retral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Update: Some Digg readers inquired about the TrackStick availability and they heard back from Blue Water Security Professionals who now carries the GPS USB stick in a slightly different casing for $300. Saelig also sells this for $299, FYI."
See the price? Note the difference. Also note the fact that the 'trackstick' doesn't update in 'real time' (I realize that it's not real real time, but it's closer than the trackstick). - Ares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2""The key to this project is the government's Enhanced 911 program, which will soon require all cellphones to transmit a GPS signal so that police can locate callers..."
wtf!??"
Since 1999, Carriers have been retooling their networks to comply with this mandate to allow emergency services to come find you, within 50 meters if someone just made a 911 call without talking. It's not new news but apparently people are just now finding out the implications.
http://www.telecomsys.com ( provides the backend tech, which incidentally runs about 1.2 million , not $100 ) and if you really want to be nervous, look up CALEA.
http://www.askcalea.net/
If you don't want to be tracked, turn your phone off, period. - tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just ordered one of the starter kits from them. Total cost was $108.99 (after shipping costs).
I'm going to hide the phone in my car and hook it up to my car battery (I've installed car audio systems before so I know how to hide wires). The end result will hopefully be the equivalent of a LoJack system in case my car is stolen, but without the ridiculous cost! - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, that sounds elaborate.
- 4771cu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://hobomotion.com/ has been doing this for months now.
- Mysidia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're a kid, and your parents want to arrange to have you tracked, that's within their rights.
Just like it's within parental rights to restrict kids in other ways; such as making them account
for where they are at all times, not allowing them to go off somewhere without permission, etc.
A kid/teenager's got no right to ditch the phone, besides, the kid would have to pay for the replacement,
which they would still be required to carry, and other consequences can be imposed.
The ability to lose the phone is moot though, as (1) the kid won't know it, will benefit from
access to a phone, and (2) within a couple of years, the tracking capability will be provided by
a permanent implant in kids that can't be discarded or "lost" - j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone know of a working GPS tracking device.....if I wanted to track a parcel in real-time?.....thnx
- Rotkiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1giving someone a cellphone isn't exactly the best option for tracking them.
"que mission impossible music"
how retarded, the phone probably gets a text message everytime you pinpoint it. - WolfNinja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is an excellent alternative to Lo-Jack incase your car is stolen. This way you dont have to rely on the police to track down your car using Lo-Jack which I think most cruisers don't have support for the last time I checked. Just call the police and let them know where the crook is yourself.
- iSlayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This sort of thing is useful is you have a kid wondering around with their friends. Something like this is very handy, or even theft.
- spy1325, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3again, you dont have to buy through them, the starter pack is overpriced, check out http://www.boostmobilestore.com/direct/boost/itemdetl.jsp?prod=2803 that phone has all the features you need to do this, and only costs 50 bucks, with 10 dollars of credit already on it, and a data cable is only 9.99 online, so thats only 60 dollars. not 100
- izzybomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I can see it now "uhh, hey why dont you use this cell phone?" "why" "so I can tra....call you..." *akward silence*.
It wouldnt work. - Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is exactly what I was thinking, sadly I JUST got my 12 year old a new cell phone too...
- kemche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know they can just lie, Right. And what if they don't answer?
- andoru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1err, you are not actually tracking the person - you are tracking the phone. A bit of a difference if they leave the phone behind somewhere.
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only Jack Bauer is cool enough to do such a thing.
- sillypickle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How to track anyone with a cell phone...
...Provided they'll accept it from you and you can afford it in the first place. Seems like it'd be more worth it to just put something in their car, since you wouldn't have to pay for it as much over time, especially if you implement a radio beacon of some sort. - WeThePeople, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, a lot of parents are going to use this or other phones to track their kids, If I was a kid and my parents tracked me, I would toss the thing on a train headed out of town, or better yet a boat headed out to sea. They would freak when they saw I was in another state or out in the middle of the ocean. Or maybe just attach it to a UPS truck, they would be like WTF! where is this kid going!
Yeah I know they would be worried, but I'm not a fan of invading my kids life and I would never do it to them unless they agreed or wanted it for safety. - nosferatu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2isn't this illegal?
...or something? - shellych, on 10/31/2008, -0/+0I need help folks. My son took his cell phone to school today because he was staying after to work on an engineering project. When he was in PE, someone broke into his locker and stole his cell phone. It is a Verizon phone. I asked for help at the school, the resource officer and no one will help me. I called and had the phone blocked and reported stolen. I was told by the principal to allow it to receive incoming calls so they could go and dial the number during lunch which they didn't do. The incoming will go off at 12:01 am tonight. Is there any way that I can track this phone? Verizon says I don't have their program the Chaperone on it so they can't help me. Any suggestions? Whomever stole it also stole money from my son and 2 other kids last week. I would love to catch this person. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah, this is really a dumb idea. Additionally, it's only supposed to be accurate to 100 meters? That's not exactly pin-point accuracy if you know what I mean...especially if you're in a city.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3lol @ ringtones
*ring ring "Do you have genital herpes?" ring ring* - Emmilita, on 07/18/2009, -0/+0What a disgusting idea! Talk about the ultimate stalking tool. If you don't trust your significant other, dump them and save yourself the money to track them down.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i really wanted a gps device to track my former gf. now it can really happen! i'll tape this ***** to her car at night or at her work and come back every few days to recharge the battery. $100 + 6 per month for absolute security is dirt cheap.
- aliskaba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard this website has free instructions and software downloads for tracking cell phones.
http://www.pukeorama.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The key to this project is the government's Enhanced 911 program, which will soon require all cellphones to transmit a GPS signal so that police can locate callers..."
wtf!?? - benhiler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2that works i guess.
- toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01. Call Chloe O'Brien
2. Have her look up person's last known location on government satelites and follow them until the present time.
Best. Way of tracking someone. Ever. - liuite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can't use this to keep tab on my wife...she turns off her cell phone 95% of the time, yet she makes more than 800 minutes of LD a month on a landline...go figure.
- FireStrife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wasnt there some guy who used this to stalk someone.. I dont remember exactly the article but I do know it had to do something with this exact technology.
- ianjones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yes I think it would be.
I would imagine people suspicious of their partners would want to use this technology more than anyone. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2What do you wanna bet google will be doing this for free at some point?
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Not if you're Woz
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1https://sfl.sprintpcs.com/finder-sprint-family/
Better, possibly? - brownboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0no, ime sorry, but no: it says 100 meters. how useless.... Besides, a hundred bucks is really steep.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1It never claimed to track a person with ALL cell phones. It just said 'a' cell phone.
