How To Fix Digg
img404.imageshack.us — To bring it back to what it once was in the days of yore...
- 1845 diggs
- digg it
- sickswaystop, on 05/19/2008, -145/+263Now where's the button for blocking all comments from members who signed after 2006 or so?
There used to be some intelligent conversation on this here space.- valis, on 05/19/2008, -8/+48That's an interesting point. Things have taken quite a sophomoric turn since then.
- RomulusX86, on 05/19/2008, -41/+9While I do agree with the intent of your comment, calling the state of Digg comments sophomoric is rather presumptuous. I'm currently a sophomore in High School, and I've been using Digg since the earlier years of 2005 when Digg v.2 (Daniel's wondrous design) was rolled out.
- iDiggIt42, on 05/19/2008, -4/+48I'm sure your e-penis feels huge now, doesn't it?
- synystar, on 05/19/2008, -4/+20You're profile says that you joined on September 11th, 2006. You get your first account banned or are you forgetting that we can see when you joined?
- screwloose45, on 05/19/2008, -2/+405's where it's at.
- jer2eydevil88, on 05/19/2008, -0/+13@synystar
I was around on this site back in 2005 but I also waited until 2006 to create an account. Does that make me a liar as well? - whahaa, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3you should look up what sophomoric means.
- Julz, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1woo go 2005!
- RomulusX86, on 05/19/2008, -5/+3@whahaa
sophomoric - "of, relating to, or characteristic of a sophomore : my sophomoric years."
@synystar
I didn't register until Sept. in 2006 but did read in on the conversations. - synystar, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2@jer2eydevil88 and Romulus Well that's a good point. You can lurk without an account but you can't do much else. I just assumed that if you're on Digg you might want to actually use the site. I suppose some people just come here to read what everyone else is digging.
- Aharoni, on 05/19/2008, -2/+3Oh yeah? well, I was around Digg on... on... 1789! we didn't have no fancy shmancy digg buttons, either! we needed to hike for miles just to digg one story!
- schoate09, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1While sophomoric tends to relate to sophomores in high school (by the phonetic and possibly latin roots), the way it's used as an adjective in his comment more than likely is just to describe immature behavior. The word sophomore is descriptive of young and lower on the scale, inexperienced.
- kinggimped, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I joined Digg back in 1420. The comments system was all trees back then. Far as the eye could see.
PS I joined in 2007. Obviously I'm responsible for pulling down the average Digger IQ into single digits. I'm sorry, everybody. Please feel free to chastise me at your leisure for being a newbie. Because there's not enough of that going on on the internet already.
- InsanePenguin08, on 05/19/2008, -3/+17I don't think....
He didn't mean....
Nevermind. - Jerky1312, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5That is what happens when you become too popular/main stream.
- Sokkratez, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14It used to be about the music, man. You changed.
- spammishking, on 05/19/2008, -7/+244crap that's me. I had no idea I was responsible for killing digg. Sorry everyone..
- mikem94590, on 05/19/2008, -4/+10I'm in the same boat too. Sorry. :-(
- AvronC, on 05/19/2008, -20/+3Your the cancer thats killing /digg/.
- xXIrsotehkewlXx, on 05/19/2008, -15/+7Does that rule apply to chicks?
I imagine I bring something to digg that not a lot of people do.
Boobs without a penis.
My contributions to society are huge I am told.- jp12380, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6No, you may stay. I guess I have to go though.
- bjornski, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8When you can bring boobs AND a penis, I'll be impressed...
- TUNAF1SH, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3She had to say boobs without as penis because most diggers probably have a set of moobs.
- willy3121, on 05/19/2008, -9/+51Steve St. Germain (sickswaystop)
A 21 year-old dude from Detroit, MI (US) who joined Digg on July 6th, 2006
You're so old school.- themastersb, on 05/19/2008, -18/+3He's more of a newfag than me
- Ryan166, on 05/19/2008, -0/+48Quit hating on Steve. He's just a 21 year old dude. Just one of the bro's, chillaxing here on digg, creating intelligent conversations, backwards hat, and some Jack Johnson playing in the back.
- hbeierg, on 05/19/2008, -1/+21you want to play some game cube bro?
- error792, on 05/19/2008, -6/+10newfag? When did digg start becoming /b/?
- Bananas21ca, on 05/19/2008, -2/+2When everyone on digg became posers
- warkro, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1when you pointed it out
- bagboyrebel, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2where have you been?
- DeathGod321, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Around the time when the 'raids' on Scientology happened.
- coollettuce, on 05/19/2008, -8/+3Hah.
A 16 year-old guy from Michigan (US) who joined Digg on October 6th, 2005
Yeah that's right I was 13 when I started.- SSUK, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14Fascinating. When is that autobiography coming out?
- zwaldowski, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1So? I started on here when I was 12, registered when I was thirteen.
- chazuk, on 05/19/2008, -4/+2No one gave a ***** then, and no one honestly gives a ***** now.
- RadiatedAnt, on 05/19/2008, -6/+1I Can Haz E-penix?
- toxicityj, on 05/19/2008, -17/+123Oh I'm sorry. because you've been here longer you're better than everyone post-2006? jackass.
- Flashman, on 05/19/2008, -4/+2Dude, everyone post-*2005* is a douche.
/oldskool
- Flashman, on 05/19/2008, -4/+2Dude, everyone post-*2005* is a douche.
- dtrinh, on 05/19/2008, -7/+24... on that thought, what about one for members who signed on after July 5th, 2006? DIGGA PLZ, I'm getting tired of this entire "the community is dying" line. There are plenty here who are much, much more enjoyable than you are -- and they joined after you.
- banmaster, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2enjoyable /= capable of intelligent discourse
- secleinteer, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1*****, that gets me by 8 days.
Oh, and LOL @ "DIGGA PLZ".
- Managua8Green, on 05/19/2008, -7/+26You're an elitist!
- neoporcupine, on 05/19/2008, -6/+2How is that bad?
- benecere, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2You might want review how Latin became a dead language or the rise and fall of internet giants. As soon a culture or a language determines it needs to ensure its "purity", it begins to die through authoring its own irrelevance. Only flexibility and adaptability keep any culture (or species, for that matter) viable.
Check it out under evolution.
- benecere, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2You might want review how Latin became a dead language or the rise and fall of internet giants. - neoporcupine, on 05/19/2008, -6/+2How is that bad?
- darkein, on 05/19/2008, -2/+34It seems like I have beat you sir, I joined January 4th, 2006 as apposed to your July 6th, 2006.
- drewowilson, on 05/19/2008, -1/+4hey... you're not a dick either! we've found our winner.
- AppleGeorge, on 05/19/2008, -14/+3For one thing, you're an ugly *****, and the other thing, stop whining.
- Locke23, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6Dude, that really won't help things.. There are some valuable diggers that joined after 06' and some valuable that joined before...
Same as there's some who just annoy us, some that joined after, and some that joined before. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -6/+1Specifically, ban everyone who joined after October 11th.
- Dundasbro, on 05/19/2008, -14/+5RON PAUL 2008!!!
/couldn't resist. - sleepwalkers, on 05/19/2008, -1/+11There are new users who are intelligent and aren't complete douche bags.
- fquednau, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2o, rly?
- banmaster, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2What? Where!!!
- Viend, on 05/19/2008, -8/+1I want an option to block all atheists to clean this place up.
- MikeSD34, on 05/19/2008, -2/+4***** non-believers ruined America for us God fearing folk like you and m... oh wait, never-mind.
- whatisis, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2I'm an athorist. Will I be blocked? :-(
- skidooer, on 05/19/2008, -3/+9"There used to be some intelligent conversation on this here space."
I feel the quality of the comments have improved dramatically since the early days of digg.- kenok, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2err.... not really.
- banmaster, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2He means "the quality of the comments has dropped down to my level dramatically since the early days of digg."
- skidooer, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1If you recall, the comment system didn't even allow replies back then. Conversations were nearly impossible and never went anywhere. Because of that the comments ended up being just silly remarks about the article.
The comment quality has improved simply because we can have conversations now. We still get plenty of silly comments, but now we get some insightful comments and some interesting debates as well.
- skidooer, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1If you recall, the comment system didn't even allow replies back then. Conversations were nearly impossible and never went anywhere. Because of that the comments ended up being just silly remarks about the article.
- synystar, on 05/19/2008, -3/+10I joined Sept 05...almost a year before you sicksway. Where's my ***** cookie?
- sfrench, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Well crap. I guess I'm an unsavory character around these parts
"...joined Digg on January 8th, 2007" - Rodalli, on 05/19/2008, -2/+15Been here since '05. Conversation here used to be less meme-infected, perhaps, but I don't think you could ever call it "intelligent".
- sparkmonkeyz, on 05/19/2008, -2/+2I like the way digg has progressed and adapted itself to a wider audience. I don't even know why there is an argument about when you joined. I tell my friends of digg, and I bet many of you do to. So what if they joined later; the more you have to bring to the conversation the better I think, and you just have to pick around a little more, and make use of diggs bury comment system.
If you want change, make it, bury the comment. - xtremesniper, on 05/19/2008, -3/+3I joined July 15th, 2005. By that logic, I clearly must be better than all of you.
- Falsey, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1Why is it that sickwaystop gets dugg up but then almost every reply that speaks against what he just said gets dugg up as well. This happens all the time. It's as if people say "hey yeah, he's right" and then someone makes a better point in opposition of what they just agreed to and they all jump on the bandwagon of "yeah, wtf is he talking about yadayada..."
Seriously wtf?- mytealjacket, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5I don't know about this case in particular, but sometimes I digg comments from opposit positions because I think they are well stated and make good points. Things in life aren't usually black and white.
Or maybe I only do that because I just joined digg and must be really dumb.
- mytealjacket, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5I don't know about this case in particular, but sometimes I digg comments from opposit positions because I think they are well stated and make good points. Things in life aren't usually black and white.
- hater2win, on 05/19/2008, -6/+1I joined April 24th, 2005, which beats most of you guys.
- zongamin, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3Aren't you clever, joining slightly earlier than some other people?
- fquednau, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I love it, it's becoming a length competition contest! What more prove to know the male/female distribution in this digg thing?
- TehProphet, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I've actually been around since early 2006, a friend got onto my account and said some stuff that got the first one banned, made a new one in march 2006, and then made this one just last year because I didn't like my old username much.
- TheCheeks, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3PHEW! Signed up 5 days before 2006.
You kind of had to expect this to come though, its how ANY site turns once this many users visit it. - taradisiac, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8Please don't bring that oldfag vs newfag ***** here.
- shyner, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1What are you talking about you jackass. You signed up July 6th, 2006.
- raptorfuzz, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I love how the comments on every story turn into a pissing contest.
Maybe the way to fix digg is to stop bickering in threads from stories that don't take their own advice and learn how to sort stories by what you want to read. - Jesse, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1No, there wasn't. (Member since Digg began)
- flipz4, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1wow...you have tenure, arent you cool...i wonder why you chose the year 2006...i guess a look at your profile would show the answer.
- Jayso89, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Photoshopped....
- porplem, on 05/19/2008, -5/+3Anyone who joined after 2004 can die in a fire.
*sticks out tongue*- Doctype, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I think most people born in general can die in a fire...
*Rips off your tongue*
- Doctype, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I think most people born in general can die in a fire...
- benecere, on 05/19/2008, -1/+0OK, you save the site by cutting off all new membership. Awesome! Lemme know how that goes for you.
- synergye, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1there's a very good reason for the "thumbs up/down" buttons...
- joshuabowers, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1The Irony... It buurrnnssses us!!
- Killwize, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Now you just sound like some Pretentious elitist type.
- BetterOffEd, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Wow. You're such a *****' trendsetter. I'm in awe to be logged in to the same site as you.
- WomensUnderwear, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0FIRST
- darkinfero, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1Joined july 25 2005 before all you guys
- Dotdotdot, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I joined April 24th, 2005
- valis, on 05/19/2008, -8/+48That's an interesting point. Things have taken quite a sophomoric turn since then.
- Scaryclouds, on 05/19/2008, -21/+30Minefield FTW
- retral, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3Lets drop you in the middle of one and see how "for the win" they really are!
- kenok, on 05/19/2008, -2/+2These kind of comments really deteriorate digg... where's the interesting and constructive discussions in the comments?
- Stettenbauer, on 05/19/2008, -33/+256What happened to cutting edge tech and Systm type hacks (real hacks ,not just throwing the word around for diggs}?It has defiantly gotten more Jerry Springer ,and I am sick of the Obama *****.
- DatoeDakari, on 05/19/2008, -7/+8Agreed, but it's pretty difficult to stop something so 'defiant'
- Reaktor5, on 05/19/2008, -3/+24We're in the midst of one of the most important elections in US history, what did you expect?
But I agree that we don't need silly articles like "BREAKING: Obama prefers tea over coffee!!111".- sleepwalkers, on 05/19/2008, -3/+7I actually expected Digg to at least be better than the MSM at covering the election. Instead, I find equally sensationalist and biased coverage.
- MikeSD34, on 05/19/2008, -0/+10It's because digg is governed by the people, it's very democratic, but shows the bias of the group. We're not an even distribution of people covering all view points, and thus the news we elect to the front page shows our own personal biases.
- heliox, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5Since when is Digg a new agency, it doesn't COVER anything. Digg is an aggregator.
- Herolint, on 05/19/2008, -0/+5MikeSD34:
I think that is why I personally feel that the quality of Digg has gone down tremendously.
I do not align myself with the point of view adhered to by most Democrats, and that is the slant Digg's majority seems to take.
Normally, this wouldn't be a problem for me. With few exceptions, I do not mind either liberal or conservative points of view. I think all points of view have merit and all points of view have flaws. What I abhor is people who engage in politics the same way they do sports; as fans rather than thinkers, and that describes the majority of Digg members, I think.
I think Digg members are generally intelligent people. It is unfortunate that so many of them are rabid liberals or rabid conservatives who cannot engage in intelligent conversation. I must admit that I allow myself to get frustrated with the lack of thought on Digg and jump into the fray at times. I think this is unfortunate.
I don't care what someones political beliefs are as long as they can discuss them intelligently. If anything at all, I'm a libertarian. My grandmother is a Democrat, my parents are Republicans, and the rest of my family falls in the mix at various level. We have great discussions and even though we don't agree on many things, I think we all come out wiser for having talked. I wish Digg members could be like that. Unfortunately, that sort of discussion rarely happens here.
Now that I'm thinking about it though, when I joined in 2005, there weren't many political discussions going on. Maybe that is why it seemed better. - Reaktor5, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1But is that such a bad thing that more political stories are being submitted and dugg? Would you rather have LESS people involved in the electoral process of the most powerful position in the world? If you don't want them on your page you can filter them out.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Reaktor5: Like I said somewhere else here, it's not that I don't want to see political stories, I just expected Digg to cover it better than MSM! I support the candidate that it seems the majority on Digg support, but I'm sick of seeing things that are as sensationalist as the "flag pin" debacle.
And honestly, I would rather have the idiots who base their decision solely on a Colbert-esque feeling in their gut not involved in the election process without knowing who or what they're really voting for.
- ghindo, on 05/19/2008, -1/+11Every US Presidential election is "one of the most important in US history."
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Right, just like all the other times an African American stood a solid chance of winning the presidency, and his relatively narrowly beat opponent in the primaries was a woman.
Sure, all elections are important, but there should little doubt in anyone's mind that this one is especially HISTORIC. There's a difference. Important elections are discussed in the newspaper while they happen. Historic elections end up in textbooks. - Herolint, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2I'm all for making history this time around. I don't particularly like some of Obama's points of view, but I sure don't want either Clinton or McCain in office.
- Lith25, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Add to it the fact that we are getting rid of the president with the lowest approval rating EVER, and I'd say it's borh important and historical.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Right, just like all the other times an African American stood a solid chance of winning the presidency, and his relatively narrowly beat opponent in the primaries was a woman.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/19/2008, -3/+7I actually expected Digg to at least be better than the MSM at covering the election. Instead, I find equally sensationalist and biased coverage.
- 80hd, on 05/19/2008, -0/+56Your saying you didn't appreciate the daily hacking guides from metacafe?
"Hack your shoes onto your feet!!!" - sputza, on 05/19/2008, -15/+4Obama FTW
- zwaldowski, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Bad timing, dude.
- hikaruzero, on 05/19/2008, -12/+18Sick of the Obama *****? Filter out the politics section.
Jesus Christ, you go to My Profile, then you go to Settings, then in the right-hand bar you click on Customize Topics. You can even uncheck the "Political Opinion" and "Elections 2008" columns and still keep "Political News."
What's with people these days, you could have done all this in the time it took you to write your comment. It's not everyone else's fault for being interested in the primaries, it's YOUR fault for failing to filter out what you aren't interested in. Don't blame everyone else for your own shortcomings.- avihappy, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6I have done that, but somehow I STILL see Obama articles.
- sarixe, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3People don't know how to categorize their submissions...
- zwaldowski, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Yeah. This may sound snide, but that's when you *bury* the article. Show the author it was miscategorized.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/19/2008, -3/+10You're missing the point. I *want* to see stories about the election, and I want to hear political news. I simply want quality stories.
Also, you're being a complete dick for no reason. Stop that.- zwaldowski, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1No, he's not. That's like me calling you a dick for telling me I can reply to you at any level. He's describing a feature of Digg.
- maninalift, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1In tech: There is only one candidate who can beat Obama... Robo-Obama!
- Stettenbauer, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Digg This-Obama passes wind and smells like jasmine!
- avihappy, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6I have done that, but somehow I STILL see Obama articles.
- lardlung, on 05/19/2008, -2/+14OH NO YOU DINT JUST SAY DAT
*throws chair* - acetv, on 05/19/2008, -0/+22I just wish the Tech News section didn't have at most two new stories per day...
- zwaldowski, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Linux/Unix has a new story every week. Half the time it's miscategorized.
- freakguy54321, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8I remember when 700 digg's was a lot of diggs
- soogy, on 05/19/2008, -0/+15Oh, boy. I remember when they first changed it. There was a mild uproar about it, and I was fairly bummed. I only come here for the amusing comments these days.
Now it's either:
JUST IN: OBAMA WINS!!! WHAT A HERO!!!
CLINTON IS A MONSTER!!!
RON PAUL IS AWESOME!!!
or MCCAIN HAD SEX WITH BUSH!!!
Really tiresome, especially for people who actually want to see real information about the upcoming election, not a ***** sucking party.- TdiFFRob6876, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3What you just described is the real election. It's just what our country does.
- active1x0, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Dugg for McCain ***** Bush.
Oh, also dugg for overall truth present in your comment.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3This may come as a terrible shock to you, but digg is a community-driven news aggregator, not a magazine published by some cool hackers.
So when you do not see the stories you crave for, there may be two reasons:
a) The community has changed/grown, so the majority's taste and yours don't match anymore. Stick with the tech section and what it has to offer (like some people only read the papers for stocks or the funnies) or find another community.
b) There are no spectacular tech news right now. And I think this might just be the case.
Fact: The world doesn't owe you (or anybody else) a regular dose of l33t haxor sh!t, because there may be nothing worth reporting at the moment.
Look at slashdot or WIRED news - these days, they don't have breathtaking tech news, either. It happens; get over it. If, however, you find a fresh, unspoiled stream of tech news, be sure to let digg know. I'm sure at least the remaining tech fans will appreciate it.
- bittermang, on 05/19/2008, -45/+21Oh noes, political discussion during an election year in a nation that has seen large political divide in opinions and is in the middle of two wars with rising gas prices and economic concerns! This isn't fair! I want my pictures of lolcats and articles about Ubuntu! How dare the site grow and change with the times! How dare the election year coverage rise to the top on a site which ranks articles based on their popularity! You've betrayed me for the last time, Digg!
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/19/2008, -5/+7Good god you're a whiny ass.
- DarkAlpine, on 05/19/2008, -3/+3And your sarcasm is horrible to boot.
- JLecker, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3The problem is, there isn't any political discussion. It's all pro-Obama, anti-Hillary/McCain/Bush--there's no discussion involved. I'm as big an Obama supporter as anyone, but I've gotten so sick of the endless spam that blocked the entire 2008 elections section and bury as spam any HuffPost, Crooks and Liars, and Alternet articles that make it through.
- ElBeh, on 05/19/2008, -12/+191It's not really a problem. Just uncheck the topics you don't like in the "Customize topics" part of your profile.
- hikaruzero, on 05/19/2008, -2/+20Dugg up because, apparently, customizing topics is rocket science these days.
It's easier to complain in the comments section than to take the derivative of My Profile and square it by the factorial of Settings multiplied by the use of L'Hopital's Law of Customize Topics. - dralezero, on 05/19/2008, -9/+2The topics still show up in the main menu bar though. I removed Sports. I don't see Sports articles in Videos and Images. But I still see the menu item for Sports, just grayed out. I do remember a time when Digg would remove that main menu item. If they can reference the link to gray it, they can reference it to not display.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6It really bothers you that much that there is a link at the top of the screen?

- MiddleOfNowhere, on 05/19/2008, -1/+4It's more than a little ironic that those people who desperately want digg to be what it once was - a tech-oriented community - obviously lack the knowledge to click the frickin' "Tech" button (and stay in that part of the site) OR just switch off whatever content they don't want to see ...
- Kyan, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3Well, said and dugg for proper use of ironic.
- falstaff, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1All we need is a way to customize the topics that are delivered via RSS. That's still all-or-nothing.

But this is the natural progression of things and it helps to step outside the box so don't be mad. It's not like Britney Spears and other stupid ***** makes the Front Page all the time so chill.
- therightclique, on 05/19/2008, -3/+7dude, ron paul makes the front page. he's the britney spears of politicians. seriously. evolution. its a deal breaker.
- ryanmct, on 05/19/2008, -8/+42Personally, I like that Digg is my all around news website. I mean, I could go onto Engadget for my tech news, CNN for my world news, and countless blogs for other news, but I find it nice that everything is all in one place. There are days when I'm interested in the tech department, so I head over to that section. But my bookmark leads to Digg>All News.

In the meantime I will continue using opera as MY personal preference which will not be changed by losers who believe their personal preference is the only way.- AppleGeorge, on 05/19/2008, -6/+2It's not my fault you use a ***** browser.
- shawn1122, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Wow AppleGeorge, you are way too in love with your browser. If you think about it, it isn't fair to say this makes Firefox better, because the comments system was tested on Firefox, so even if it did manage to crash Firefox at some point in its creation, that would have been fixed. But again, as others have said, the worst that it should do is show up with the wrong formatting, it shouldn't crash the entire browser and thats mostly the Opera Devs fault.
Digg isn't enough of a reason to completely switch browsers, over time you get very used to the fine points of your browser and becomes pretty hard to switch. A lot of Opera users must just visit digg very periodically now on Firefox, which is what I do.
Honestly, I don't expect the guys at Digg to care if it works on Opera or not, there just aren't enough people using it. So it is very nice of them to look into fixing it. If they weren't planning on fixing it, I'd probably use Firefox for Digg for a while and wait for a weekly build to fix the problem, and if that didn't happen, I'd just switch to Firefox. Firefox is slower on this pc for sure, but it doesn't render some sites wrong the way Opera does. Anyways, if Digg is working on Opera, then I'd happily stay with it, I just wish they'd improve their javascript performance already.
- Locke23, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6No can do...
You gotta wait till' November man, after that.. It'll be fixed :)- shawn1122, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3I hope you're not serious, its annoying having firefox and opera open at the same time. Hopefully the Opera Devs will figure out what the browser is doing wrong. And for all those who are going to say 'use firefox'....no *****, I know thats an option. But Opera loads every site faster for me, and the ui is way more responsive on my pc. I have no need for extensions, I just want to surf my sites as quickly as possible and get on with my day.
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong that makes Firefox slower than Opera for me, or maybe its just that my pc is so slow that the supposedly slight difference in speed between Firefox and Opera is magnified.
Firefox seems to handle javascript way better, Gmail, Yahoo Mail and such all load much faster on Firefox. But if you are loading a page with just text and images and maybe some Flash, Opera seems to be faster, at least on my pc.
Hopefully, it is fixed soon, I was considering switching to Firefox, even tried it out for a day. But after seeing sites load as fast as they did in Opera, I just can't justify in my mind to switch to Firefox. And I only had the adblock extension installed too, if I were to add more, thatd slow down Firefox even more. Firefox RC1 is much faster now though, renders and loads much faster than before, but still not as fast as Opera for me.- fkr3, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4It's more annoying when you forget and then you accidentally click a comments link in Opera, it crashes and you can't restore your session because that also restores digg's comment page.
- HigherLogic, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2Turn of JavaScript for Digg then. At least you can go to the pages and read some of the comments, can't do much of anything else though.
- shawn1122, on 05/19/2008, -1/+3I hope you're not serious, its annoying having firefox and opera open at the same time. Hopefully the Opera Devs will figure out what the browser is doing wrong. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/19/2008, -10/+2So sorry for all the Opera users... I keep buring their complains and digging "use firefox suggestions".
This problem sucks, and it should be fixed soon, but Opera devs should fix the problem, with Digg devs giving them tips on how the error is happening.
That way the problem doesn't happen on other sites.- HigherLogic, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1I agree that Opera should look into this, but it's not their job to fix what the Digg developers obviously cannot do, or don't give a ***** enough to fix. It's the developers job to make sure their site works for the major browsers, even if it is 1% of the users. There's no reason your can't develop a site that works for Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2/3, Opera 9.x, and Safari. Period. I can't find any reason why the this comment system would require something so unique and advanced, JavaScript wise, that it ends up crashing a browser (and there are reports of it crashing Firefox 3 betas as well).
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1If Operas browser crashes. Opera ***** up.
There's a big difference between the site not loading/displaying properly and the browser terminating with an error.
A persons web browser shouldn't crash. This is primarily a concern for Opera Devs.
You think I'm trashing Opera, I'm not. This is expected of all Browsers.
In the meantime, there's no reason why Digg can't work around the problem.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1If Operas browser crashes. Opera ***** up.

- shondell, on 05/19/2008, -3/+15But i think he stopped submitting stories. And seriously, i cant believe how much drama and ***** has been going on because of Mrbabyman. Its like ***** junior high. It amazes me how much people give a ***** about how Mrbabyman's submissions are regurgitated material yet always get popular. I say those stories wouldve made digg one way or another and Mrbabyman is just always the first one on them.
- AppleGeorge, on 05/19/2008, -7/+5I hope he did leave. Give other people a chance to actually submit something and make it to the front page. Instead of spending all day on Digg he should actually work.

- woofers07, on 05/19/2008, -1/+4I was about to post the same argument, most technological stories on Digg usually migrate over from Slashdot anyway.
- jetfuel, on 05/19/2008, -2/+6Ah but you weren't here two years ago when there were maybe 2 full pages of stories hitting the front page a day and tons of cool ***** to look at. It didn't really ever have news outside of technology, and most of the content was just cool stuff on the web, not necessarily news.
- elvenseven, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2I was here 2 years ago under another nick back when Digg was 1.0. I still prefer it now where top news from any category reaches front page. I get my tech news from Neowin, they update everything related to tech.
- sevenalive, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2I hate slashdot, their layout, how they do their stories. How they put the link within the article instead of one central place. I also don't like their comment system. slashdot sucks.

- Branchex, on 05/19/2008, -5/+40You wanna fix Digg, allow people to only have 10 friends, then it will be more about democracy than mobocracy.
- spizike, on 05/19/2008, -2/+3Yes, because it's impossible to gather people to digg your stories without digg's friends list.
- sleepwalkers, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4No, but it'd certainly cut down on the hubub that's been surrounding people like MrBabyMan and such, where it seems like his stories automatically get front-paged.

- Paktu, on 05/19/2008, -4/+52For those of us who have been around a while (since 2005 for me), the problem is not the lack of tech stories per se, but the declining overall quality of stories. It's just the way things are as Digg becomes increasingly mainstream. I still like the site, but it's just not the way it used to be.
- mrASSMAN, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Yes, and we only have ourselves to blame for that.. stop digging ***** submissions people!
- osuchasenuts, on 05/19/2008, -7/+4To fix digg we need to get rid of the 100+ comments moronic comments that follow every top 10 submittal. There's about 20 good comments on these, but I can't find them anymore.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/19/2008, -3/+1Buried comments that go below a certain threshold should be deleted.
- Badandy127, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Now there's censorship for you. Collapsing someone's comment is quite enough, I'd hate to see what the site would become if dissident voices couldn't even have the opportunity of having their position read.

And yes, I do understand how annoying it can be, but Digg has already given users the tools needed to 'fix' digg, they just do not use them or know about them.- GavinZac, on 05/19/2008, -5/+2I think that's his point.
Bravo on missing it despite the big bold red letters. - makenshin, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3No, I saw those, and the 'To bring it back to what it once was in the days of yore...' as in when Tech articles ruled. My point covers all categories you dont want to see and you can still look at the front page without going into sub-categories. And this tip isnt actually mine, it's from another digger, just passing along the knowledge.
- GavinZac, on 05/19/2008, -5/+2I think that's his point.
- swean, on 05/19/2008, -6/+7i don't get it.
- polishdude06, on 05/19/2008, -2/+11How to thwart this "fix for Digg":
Submit ***** articles and tag them as "Technology" - Link459, on 05/19/2008, -10/+3DUGG FOR GREAT JUSTICE.
- nickerbocker, on 05/19/2008, -1/+12I know how to fix Digg. Don't digg stuff like this to the front page and leave it for real news and stories.
- redflagfan, on 05/19/2008, -2/+7i set the default to do this. no more clinton obama *****.
- Ocelot13, on 05/19/2008, -3/+5my way of how to fix it

i think someone needs to make a new version of digg... so that we'll have a bit before its gets overrun by 4chan and obama.
then we can enjoy it for awhile!- thear, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3You need EasyElement to hide the spaces from the removed advertisements.
http://easylist.adblockplus.org/ - cathars1s, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3I was really confused for a while until I realized there are normally ads on digg.
I heart adblock plus.

- sideffects, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Dude you're not that smart. Customize what you want your front page to be.

Kevin Rose NEVER intended digg to be political.- Niightwitch, on 05/19/2008, -2/+4He may never have intended Digg to become political but he gave the people what they wanted which was the responsible thing to do.
- aserer511, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1what? no. at heart digg is use submitted stories, but it is not user submitted site format.

- nomadbea, on 05/19/2008, -3/+4I agree wholeheartedly with this fix.
- liza, on 05/19/2008, -7/+6i think you're looking for SLASHDOT
- nickert0n, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1Wow soo freaking true, thats what I do when im getting sick of watching how Mario shouldent die
- MetalGear7, on 05/19/2008, -5/+3How to Fix Digg...Stop Bitching and let Homeostasis and Equilibrium do its thing
- charlie763, on 05/19/2008, -5/+7I think you guys are looking for Slashdot.
- fudged71, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3guys, the variety is fine.
well, it is fine if the users know how to look for the content that they want to see (using the settings provided).
what we need is anonymous posting in the upcoming- Badandy127, on 05/19/2008, -1/+0That's the problem. There is no variety. It's all
1. Go Obama
2. Hilary Sucks
3. Go Obama
4. LOLCAT
5. Go Obama
- Badandy127, on 05/19/2008, -1/+0That's the problem. There is no variety. It's all
- TheShero, on 05/19/2008, -4/+1you see...we're not asking digg to turn into slashdot. we don't mind a couple of "what Obama/Clinton ate last night" stories every NOW and THEN, but right now, you just have to Filter through a sh*t load of crap to get a couple of "oldschool digg" diggs
when i find myself going to gizmodo, and old youtube screensavers vids to see something "digg worthy" that is just not right
but then again, everyone on earth is right
*edit*
Also, YES, we do have the option to customize and choose NOT to see certain topics. But...DON'T YOU SEE...that defeats the whole purpose, we WANT to see digg worthy stuff, but not every single story in a certain category (example...oh lets just say POLITICS) - casual7y, on 05/19/2008, -1/+5i was thinking of something like this:

to each his own, i guess.- sevenalive, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2Why do people use tinyurl or other sites like it. Doesn't make any sense. I don't believe we are typing it into the addy bar, we are just clicking on the link. If you don't want the whole link to be long, then use simple html. (html is blocked on digg tho, so just post the real link and save everyone who doesn't use firefox and adblock the popups and ads.)
- SifuMoKung, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1What's a pop-up?
Sincerely,
Firefox user.- sevenalive, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1i am a firefox and adblock user, i meant save the ones who aren't

- Yeknom, on 05/19/2008, -7/+17I love digg for the random stories and other cool *****. I just get fed up with so many stories written by people who wanna suck Obama's *****. That's why I uncheck political :)
- Me0wmix, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1lol?
- cathars1s, on 05/19/2008, -1/+2seriously.
I come to digg for news, not political proselytizing. I wish there were more filter options so I could get real world news without having to sift through videos/stories of Keith Olbermann, Ron Paul, and Barack Obama.
***** gets annoying, boys and girls.
