- 64705, on 05/21/2009, -1/+77How often do we hear about these optical storage breakthroughs? Just look at the "related by keyword" stories on Digg:
- Terabyte optical disc: Made popular Feb 4, 2005
- Terabyte-class holographic discs: Made popular Jul 19, 2005

- thegamingguy, on 05/20/2009, -0/+19I wish I had read this 5 years ago so that I would be actually holding those discs today.
- ripple123, on 05/21/2009, -0/+12as with most science articles, ill believe it when i can buy it off the shelf.
- FaceCage, on 05/21/2009, -0/+11We need something with some protection around it. Maybe like a hard plastic case. Instead of a shiny disk to hold data, maybe a length of flexible film-like material that could be spun around two wheels. "Data" would be written linearly on the film. The user could "seek" out particular data by using a mechanism that would spin posts that would in turn spin the wheels by which the filmesque material is held.
I'm gonna start sketching out some plans for this... - doctordbx, on 05/21/2009, -0/+10It was steaming! But they put a freeze on it.
- ripple123, on 05/21/2009, -0/+9yeah. you wouldnt be holding them today. none of this ***** comes to pass. its just stuff to fill the headlines. words like 'could' and 'has implications for' and so on. they might be onto something, but probably not.
- lewkus, on 05/21/2009, -0/+8where is the "How to" part?
this is not an instructional article. i had 300 dvds on standby ready to go, bitterly disappointed. - yaosio, on 05/21/2009, -0/+8Why DVDs only? You can fit 1.11x10^6 floppy disks on this new stuff.
- merdok, on 05/21/2009, -4/+11Speak for yourself.
- OdinsFury, on 05/21/2009, -0/+7Can I get a copy of this burned... onto water?
- uberduger, on 05/21/2009, -0/+7AUSTRALIA, you fool. The country of kangaroos, the outback, and Fritzl.
- ninjan, on 05/21/2009, -0/+7a small scratch = 300 DVDs gone...

- Wiggle987, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5/facepalm
- my10cent, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4Material cost per disc $0.05 = $150 per disc retail Feckers!
- Cglass, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4I think optical has drowned it out.
- DeceasedVirus, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4HA!
- Twinnie, on 05/20/2009, -6/+10GO AUSTRIA!
- Stoyanov, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4It doesn't work like this. However, theoretically it is possible in a single pass with a large enough dictionary. CPU usage is going to be over the roof though.
- beabis, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4The disc can also be used as a highly efficient solar panel.
- johnsmith3210, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3^^^ Hahahaha, you should patent that idea. You don't want someone stealing it and make an insane amount of profit from your breakthrough idea. ;)
- Schmich, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3He meant Australia but he compressed it removing "ral" from it.

- doctordbx, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3I have the 2 x DVD collectors edition :(
- hotpuck6, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2This just in: Optical media once again increasing in size.
Even if they were able to make this commercially feasible and marketable, It won't hit the market for another 7-10 years. - Jpatano, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2yeah, i'm guessing these discs are going to be incredibly expensive. at a whopping 1+ TB per disc, it's not like you're going to need a stack of 100 discs... therefore they will most likely be marketed in single disc packaging, and probably not anywhere near cheap, since you won't be going through them like you would normal DVD's.
- forgeflow, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Pro-tip: AnyDVD HD. "What encryption"?
also: WHAT DOES DIGG NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT "KEEP ME LOGGED IN ON THIS COMPUTER?" - x1soundgarden1x, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2I see your point but disagree. When Apple IIe's first came out their designers said no one would ever need more than something like ~8kb of space. So, while we can't imagine being able to fill up 1TB discs easily, I think in 10 years all TV will be 3d (this is already happening in movie theaters and companies are designing 3d tvs right now) and thus will take much more space. The discs will be expensive at first, but then they will get better at producing them and prices will go down and they will sell them in bulk.
It's just a matter of time before people complain that 1TB discs are too small for their 3D TV shows and video games. - inajeep, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Through not over.
I'm hoping LowROI is true to his name and making a funny. - Schmich, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2and then added an "r"...okay, fine, I messed up as well *runs away crying*
- mrogi, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2I'm way ahead of the game. My Western Digital 2 terabyte hard drive has over 500 porn videos. I buy Vaseline by the case.
- Heidenreich12, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2it will be fun to label it with 300 names
- ethana2, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1I can fit a third of that on my external hard drive right now. Let optical die.
- GTRagnarok, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1I don't log in to Digg very often, but I just had to do it today to reply to this post.
"t says in the article that the discs would have Ten layers. That would be the size of 5 DVD9 discs stacked together.
Disc drives would have to be modified for the disc to play, and a stronger motor would have to be put in the drive.
the disc's layers would be 6mm thick not counting the protective layer, which would probably have to be just as thick to protect the data in the disc. So the disc would be 6mm thick. If this is released to the consumer, i would gladly buy it, but these discs are going to be expensive as hell."
LOL, are you serious? You have no idea what you're talking about dude. - Ci5tm, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1I'm beginning to regret spending £25 on Blu ray's this morning...
- Lion29, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1yep..thats what i am afraid of...
- merdok, on 05/21/2009, -1/+2What happened to the 'water storage' thing that came out about a year ago... that sounded well cool!
- LowROI, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1although it's been 3 weeks, i am returning to this thread to say that i did indeed post this comment as a joke.
- kerouac906, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1But I'd have to make it in triplicate, 1 general use copy, 1 on-hand backup in case of damage, and 1 in my safe deposit box for prosperity's sake.
- 4321234, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1One word. Photons.
