- dvsbastard, on 09/05/2008, -3/+41I use this to protect my identity while browsing online...

- hugolp, on 09/05/2008, -1/+29Like D1ckFace said, it erases your tracks on your own PC but you are exposed to the whole internet, since you are using your ip address. So in the hipotetical case that someone is spying you over the internet it doesnt matter if you put the "Incognito browsing" mode. It will be able to track you anyways. And that aplies to Chrome and to IE8. This incognito mode is only useful if you dont want your wife to keep track of the porn you watch on the internet by checking your computer ( which is a sad thing cause porn is fun, and with your wife is even more fun, but thats another matter). But for that is quite more efective to have separete accounts in the computer.
If you want to be almost imposible to track you have to use something like Tor. - AbstortedMinds, on 09/05/2008, -3/+18wow, exactly like safari's Private Browsing except safari probably doesn't keep track of everything you do in a database like google
- D1ckFace, on 09/05/2008, -3/+17allows you to erase your tracks on your own PC but not from tptb.
Use a proxy to do this. - Lionhart, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14Uh Safari has had this feature for a long time. It's called Private Browsing.
- ZetaVu, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8Sorry, but Firefox has done this for as long as I've used it. I set it to delete cache and cookies from all sites except those which I want to keep (some forums and emails I visit often). You can set it to delete them when you close firefox, or get extensions that do it more vigorously. Hell you can even set buttons to whack info for you.
Honestly, thee are far too many IE users who have no idea what is available to them, that's why the same old things seem new all of a sudden. - Jordan117, on 09/05/2008, -1/+8Since switching to Firefox 3, I've gotten a lot of use out of the Distrust extension:
http://www.gness.com/distrust/
I like it better than Stealther (which everyone seems to rave about) because it lets you *selectively* block things from your history rather than clearing the whole thing. You just activate an icon in the taskbar, and from then until you deactivate it every aspect of your browsing -- history, closed tabs list, disk cache, cookies -- are deleted. It's great since it lets you harness the power of the AwesomeBar while still staying discreet when need be. (You know... for buying surprise gifts for loved ones. Yes. That.) - r3zonance, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7Private Browsing has been in Safari for years, probably why Google called theirs "Incognito"
- plasmoske, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5you know whats funny
in chrome it says ingonito mode will protect you from isp spying on you. lolwut?
the isp owns your internet. u cant hide what youre doing unless youre using some form of encryption or proxy - gidd, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4One thing Incognito Mode doesn't clear is Flash's Shared Objects store.
Go to a site that uses Flash with locally stored data (eg. many sites with video players) and check "C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects/*". There's a good chance there's a directory with the purportedly secret (porn) site's hostname on it.
The same's true of other browsers (such as Safari's Private Browsing mode), but it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that Google Chrome's multi-process architecture would be able to sandbox plugins such as Flash as well. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4Can Chris Hanson still track me down?
- Kelmon, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4To be honest, I'm surprised that other browsers are only just starting to add this feature as well. As far as I can remember this feature has been around since v1 of Safari, although I might be making that up.
- plasmoske, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4he uses chrome. theres no adblock har har har...
- hugolp, on 09/05/2008, -2/+6Chrome only sends info to google as search queries of what you are looking for and that can be deactivated or changed for another search engine. But it happens that in incognito mode the search queries are deactivated as well, so its the same as Safari, except that you know that Google isnt lying because they released the source code, while with Safari you can not be sure, since you have not way of checking if Apple is saying the truth. But Apple is not evil right? they make you feel so so so cool that they cant be lying. They are good people.
- hit9ent, on 09/05/2008, -3/+6Nothing new to me. Private Browsing for safari works amazing.... Though I do like chromes task manager. A+.
- leahcim, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4This is silly, incognito browsing, though I guess kind of easier to use, really does nothing to protect your privacy online, just from spouses.
- Zaggynl, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4What are these ads you speak of?
- Tarnum, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4Digg has ads?
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4Don't I know you?
- danwallace, on 09/05/2008, -2/+4Linux port please.
- unitedkronos, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3A instance of Firefox Portable in a TrueCrypt volume is a good way to erase your footprint from a PC, though Tor is needed if you want to be anonymous on the Internet.
- casek, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2even better, the vidalia project which includes privoxy.
something more secure is a livecd called anonym.OS
changes your mac address, uses tor, etc. - plasmoske, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3yeah and every chrome installation/browser gets a unique id
this gets sent to google
so doesnt matter if you dont have cookies/cache or wateva
they will know what youre doing - plasmoske, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2WRONG
- subgeniusd, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2^^I was just going to ask where is Fhwqhgads' post.
- mr5150, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3Buried for inaccuracy in title: should read 'How To Erase Your Tracks On You Computer'...there are many programs to do this and i don't need a crap ass feature on Google's browser to do this however if i use Chrome which i don't maybe i should but any way...the story is buried for ***** title.
- Fhwqhgads, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2^^ I was just going to post this.
- donna1234, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1A new feature as a must-have in Web-browsing software

http://www.webthe.info - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -4/+5yeah the database for Safari is at Steve Jobs house.. oh and Safari sucks more than IE.
- bradharrelson, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Hahaha. Man that is one reason I am not using Chrome this instant. I need my extensions!
- Fhwqhgads, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1^^ I am your God. Get on your knees and bow to me!
- bradharrelson, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3Nothing new. Bury.
- thakur01, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Best way to erase your tracks is to post online using your real name, it really works!
- esc27, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I think it is funny how Google is being credited with features that already exist in the other browser's betas. IE 8 beta 2 has the privacy mode. Firefox 3.1 beta has the improved javascript speeds. Firefox 3.0 release has the enhanced address bar.
- dxgg, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Firefox extension: Stealther.
- jlw00329, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Hey, thanks for the information. Didn't know about this extension
- ArchAngel21x, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1So it will finally be safe to use public computers again? IE, computers at a library?
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3Get adblock you idiot.
- unrealmp3, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Only cover your tracks on the local PC. Use an anonymous proxy for the online part.
- drgmdp, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1not really
- unrealmp3, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Keyloggers can catch what you type whatever you are using Incognito mode. A safe computer is one that you always kept under your control. Otherwise, I wouldn't trust it.
- subgeniusd, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1You must have a vivid imagination if you see sexual ads on Digg. Would that be like any girl? Or boy? (not that there's anything wrong with that).
- hellogoodbye, on 09/05/2008, -3/+3Speaking of Private Browsing, is anyone getting annoyed by the sexual (and video) ads on Digg?
- Sherman901, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1why the hell do they keep mentioning internet explorer when it comes to incognito mode? internet explorer is the last one to the party considering safari has had this for quite some time and i'm pretty sure firefox does as well.
- willwillywilson, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1TOOLS>CLEAR PRIVATE DATA. So Chrome does something automatically which you could do in Firefox easily in two clicks? WOW. What a huge leap.
- bradharrelson, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0Uh huh..... Thumbs down!
- Sahtor, on 09/05/2008, -5/+1First thing I'd do is not browse with Chrome, IE, Safari, Opera and maybe even Firefox. These browsers send lists of visited URLs to their parent companies.
Only secure way is to code your own Gecko/Webkit UI. - mrmiggidude, on 09/05/2008, -10/+3My girlfriend is being so naggy on the phone while I ignore her and digg.
What is Digg?
