- latenightlab, on 03/31/2009, -2/+15Interesting concept, though I don't think I'd have the balls to do it.
- kernel16, on 03/31/2009, -6/+14OH GIVE ME A ***** BREAK, SICK OF TWITTER STORIES!!!
- BZKyle, on 03/31/2009, -6/+13These comments suck.
- lepetitmousse, on 03/31/2009, -2/+9who gives away a plane ticket?
- malanic, on 03/31/2009, -5/+11Well considering that he's probably got friends and relatives who could bail him out in a pinch, and he's probably also got a bank account and a credit card, just how exactly is he being 'brave', any more than the millions of backpackers around the world?
This guy had an original idea, that will no doubt lead to copycats trying to emulate his 'free ride', just as there would be millions who would like to swap a yellow paper clip for a house. I wouldn't call them brave though. - visionaryIX, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5More than one island, actually. Three main ones and a few others.
- securitymonkey, on 03/31/2009, -1/+6"Paul said: 'He recognised that my diet for the past three weeks had been lacking in bacon and egg sandwiches, and quickly righted that wrong. "
That's what this story needed.
BACON - nepidae, on 03/31/2009, -0/+5He got the twits to buy him plane tickets.
- bicyclethief, on 03/31/2009, -2/+6He's probably been tea-bagged countless times in his sleep by strangers at this point...
- Irishsmurf, on 03/31/2009, -1/+5Well he raised 5k for Charity. Thats more than the millions of backpackers do.
- Phetz, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3That's freakin' amazing if it actually happened. I know Twitter's being used in some crazy ways, but I never would have thought of that!
- lisagreen212, on 03/31/2009, -1/+5Can I get Twitterers to pay for my PhD?? I'll even write my thesis about Twitter!
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -1/+5I dugg him up because you seem to dislike it.
- kahn2001, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4I can haz phd?
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3If I may correct you actually it is two main Islands, North and South.
- diggduggDOOM, on 03/31/2009, -4/+7Buried for Twitter.
- wily6, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3At least this guy figured out a way to make a profit using twitter.
- Kylde, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4he was on TWIT with Leo Laporte too
- binaryloop, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3JULES: Basically I'm just gonna walk the earth.
VINCENT: Whatcha mean 'walk the earth'?
JULES: You know, like Caine in Kung Fu - walk from place to place, meet people, get in adventures.
VINCENT: How long do you intend to walk the earth?
JULES: Until God puts me where he want me to be.
VINCENT: What if he never does?
JULES: If it takes forever, I'll wait forever.
VINCENT: So you decided to be a bum? - Biscuitz, on 03/31/2009, -1/+4And I struggle with paying bills sometimes.... FML.
- nepidae, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3In the time it took you to type that, you could have scanned the article and found your answer.
- bicyclethief, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2I wouldn't call the idea original either:
http://www.couchsurfing.com/ - fxu1989, on 03/31/2009, -9/+11Twitter section so I can block it out, please.
- MsBehaviour, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Kiwi Fm is a radio station that plays 100% NZ Music: http://kiwifm.co.nz My husband Chelfyn cooked him that bacon.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 03/31/2009, -6/+8why are you getting dugg up? Its a cool story about a guy who used twitter in a unique way to do something awesome.
People see "twitter" and they turn their brains off and decide to start trolling in any way possible. - xjeffx, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2A New Zealand airline gave it to him.
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -1/+3Im from New Zealand, and I have two questions. What the ***** is Kiwi FM, and why the ***** did he decide to go to Stewart Island?
- xjeffx, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3A New Zealand airline gave it to him.
- Dinner, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Still, it's a gimmick that would only work once. The reason he got all this money thrown at him was novelty.
- wideawakewesley, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2A NZ airline have flown him home I believe.
- dlan4327, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3Done.
- Dinner, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2I love how ***** like this is always presented as proof of the universal spirit of human generosity.
Yeah, great — a bunch of people jumped on the bandwagon for this now-famous guy's fun concept.
Does that mean anyone can 'hitchhike' themselves a trans-Pacific plane ticket over Twitter? No, obviously. In fact, they're far less likely to now that everyone has read about this guy and thought "Gee, I'd love a trans-Pacific plane ticket". Is anyone who doesn't have a job prospect in far-away lands and the luxury to spend a lot of time on Twitter going to benefit from this newfound human generosity? Nope.
This is like winning the lottery and displaying it as proof that the lotto corp is extremely generous.
EDIT: Oh, I didn't see the '£5000 for charity' bit. That is generous. CONVENIENT. - visionaryIX, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1I live in NZ.
It depends whether you consider Stewart Island a 'main island'. In terms of population it isn't, but its still relatively important. - ewilley, on 03/31/2009, -1/+2I just want to Know how did he get home Or is he still in new zealand
- mdmanic, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1The article doesn't say...
- qbthemc, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1You sir are a dweeb.
- rdolishny, on 03/31/2009, -3/+3Totally believable except for that North America to NZ part. Who paid for that?
- feliks2, on 03/31/2009, -1/+1at least
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -2/+1@Paul - After you land it's vital you... hang on... making poop now

- stevenh32, on 03/31/2009, -2/+1Absolutely not. Actually I friended you for NOT having a Twitter account. Haha. Add me :P

- Atomic1fire, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1And here I thought the phrase was,
DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS... DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS... DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS - sodaman300, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1He's a *****.
- madrona, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1maybe that hitchhiker going from CA to TX that ended up in the Sacramento tent city because he ran out of money needs to get in touch with this guy.
- shinkou, on 04/01/2009, -1/+1While his idea is not original, he is certainly a BRAVE traveler... well, if he has considered things like server does go down and his account could be 'stolen' by someone.
