- Phoenixheart, on 10/10/2008, -2/+15Too bad it forgot to mention how to reach that "top".
- marshallk, on 10/09/2008, -3/+16Per-post, full-time and hourly rates discussed for 10 top bloggers and social media consultants and their employees when they got 'em.
- caracter2, on 10/10/2008, -0/+9A gazillion diggs
- oda1, on 10/10/2008, -0/+9me fail English? that's unpossible!
- selmer, on 10/10/2008, -1/+9I thought they got paid in WoW g's....
- theutopian, on 10/10/2008, -0/+7"Social Media Consultant" = Hangs out on Facebook and Digg all day.
- marshallk, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5you don't know that many people with $10/hr or less jobs, huh?
- theutopian, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4They are the exception, not the rule.
Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. - SillyRabbits, on 10/10/2008, -1/+5Well, when you're doing contract work, you have to pay your entire social security tax withholding (the bulk of which is usually paid by the employer at a regular job - and nobody ever notices). When you add the cost of even a basic health insurance plan, with a $40k gross, you are probably going to end up at the $10/hr range. That's not enough for most people to get "insanely jealous" about. And no, I don't know many people that are willing to work $10/hr jobs (at least not many that aren't in highschool - that's barely $20k a year).
- Farmer77, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3A submission with a good chance of getting on the front page of a PR 8 site coupled with an insane amount of unique visitors? I say an awful lot.

"No, I know 0 and I wouldn't care about anyone making that little since they're clearly doing something wrong..."
Yeah obviously Ghandi got it "wrong" bevause he was poor. You are exactly the sort of materialistic soulless cretin who is ruining America and turning the planet into a vast clear cut, globally warmed, land fill, you are douchebag and an *****. - SillyRabbits, on 10/10/2008, -1/+4"The world is full of people who would be insanely jealous of people who make $40k a year blogging, if it was widely known that you could do that for a living."
Huh? Insanely jealous? Blogging as a full time job, without benefits, for $40k. You're not going to find many of those jealous people in industrialized nations. - SillyRabbits, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3@GRTWHT
Well, I was also trying to point out that $40k in contract pay is far different than making $40k as a regular employee. Most people aren't aware of the overhead that companies are required, by law, to cover. When you enter the world as a consultant, you discover all of these hidden costs (e.g. you have to pay self-employment tax (~15%) in addition to income tax for starters) . As a result, $40k in contract pay is about equivalent to $20-25k as a regular employee (if you have to buy your own insurance). After federal and state taxes, it's hard to live anywhere on that. - GRTWHT, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3SillyRabbits is almost certainly from the east coast, southern California, etc. The severely inflated economies of those areas would insure that there would be almost nobody that can 'live a decent life' on $40K/year.
Of course, if that's what I did for a living, I would almost certainly live somewhere with a very poor economy, allowing me to live a very luxurious life on that much money - let's face it, if you blog for a living, you can blog from anywhere that you can connect - including places where $40K is a lot. - Totz83, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3Will consult for food

- mb309, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2In other words, if you don't already have a 9-5 job, go for it.
- BradBrown, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2I'm calling dibs on the title "new media maverick."
- mageek, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2sounds like a good deal
- NNOP, on 10/10/2008, -1/+3So whats the going rate for a lolcat these days?
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -2/+4Step 1: be born a douche
Step 2: continue to be a douche for many many years
Step 3: meet many douchey friends in many douchey places
Step 4: do poorly in life while maintaining your relentlessly self-important douchiness
Step 5: decide the world can't get enough of your douchitude and that you should start jotting down your douchiness
Step 6: jot down your douchiness
Step 7: tell your large network of douchey friends about your latest douche
Step 8: douche some more
Step 9: ????
Step 10: profit much less than the rest of us - DIGGANGEL, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Nice survey, but I think the number of bloggers who was asked is a very small fraction but I think it is possible. I just wonder where and what topic do they submit their posts.
- JasonPeck, on 10/10/2008, -1/+3yep basically..
- JasonPeck, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2the key is you don't need 9 years of experience to be a social media consultant. anyone who likes learning about this stuff and has a passion for it can do it with some success. Though doing this for a small business is a little different than for a huge company.
- DreKor, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2I don't think it's possible to have 9+ years of experience in a field that hasn't been around for more than 5. I suppose you could claim it goes back farther, but I don't think The Well counts as commercial social media.
- navmit, on 10/10/2008, -2/+3So, when does social media consulting / paid blogging etc., go to China / India? I bet the cost there would not be more than 8000 - 10000 USD per year versus 40K in the US!
- iMacFiend, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1The traditional role of Community Manager - where does this stand in the new fangled world of "Social Media Consultant"? We do the same thing - reach out to a community, except we do it on a daily basis within a more structured environment, usually in a niche community. Social Media is a new fangled term in this fast moving web 2.0 world. I would like to see how many "Social Media Consultants" can say they have 9 plus years experience. Next time I change jobs, I am gonna rebrand myself...
- abundantworld, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2wow very interesting, and something to work towards i guess i wouldnt mind to be paid $80 per post either
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2No, I know 0 and I wouldn't care about anyone making that little since they're clearly doing something wrong in life unless somehow disabled (for real and not just a welfare seeker). Also, why would I want to live somewhere where 40k is a lot? That's certainly a quality of life downgrade.
- Humpasaur, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2I am clearly a total ***** retard, because after years of doing this I still barely clear a profit. Time to kill myself!
- louseey, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1Where are the blogging jobs?
- rebrad, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1All the personal pan pizzas he can eat.
- RobertJohnner, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1How much does the Sprouse Brothers bloggers get paid?
- iMacFiend, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1I was employed by a large OSP in a community capacity in 1999, and have worked within that sphere of New Media since then. Prior to that I was a very active community user, and online since '95. Like I said Social Media and Community Management - not really two different things, one is seen as hip and trendy now :)
- AssShanks, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1in korea.
- iMacFiend, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1I have been working as a community manager since 1999, within various roles, but all as a community manager - and not with The Well. Message boards and chat rooms have been around a lot longer than blogs...
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2The real question is... how much does mrbabyman get paid?!
- forgreatminds, on 12/09/2008, -0/+0If the writing delivers substantial readership and a loyal following, then it should be elevated into the realm of SEO specialists. In fact, blogging makes the job of SEO infinitely easier! I think this is a new medium, one that hasn't achieved the recognition it deserves. All in good time...
- Metyu, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1It would be nice to know who blogs full-time, what their subjects are and who pays them.
- Metyu, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1It would be interesting to know who is being paid to blog full-time, how much they are paid and who pays them.
- socialmediage, on 12/05/2008, -0/+0how much do they all get paid?
- TheFoshizzler, on 10/10/2008, -2/+2Seems like a pretty sweet gig if you can make it to the top.
- einfoway, on 10/10/2008, -1/+1I dont think they get paid well as compared to time they invest in this job
- VSVAs, on 10/10/2008, -3/+1Thanks for giving us all hope. I am climbing the Web 2.0 mountain and the top is in sight! Stay positive, baby steps to your ultimate goals!
- mongo22, on 10/10/2008, -4/+2This is a good informational source. I'm new to blogging and have been curious what the bottom and ceiling could potentially be for blogging.
- goettel, on 10/10/2008, -5/+2If you need to ask, you won't.
- mesarah, on 10/10/2008, -7/+2Are the top bloggers get paid? I dont believe this!
