How Mozilla Used Social Networking To Set A World Record
blogs.zdnet.com — Mozilla is currently deep in the heart of its celebration over officially setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads (8 M) in 24 hours for its Firefox 3 browser. But the company isn ’t cheering alone — its enjoying this victory with the community it rightfully credits for helping it to succeed.
- 968 diggs
- digg it
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -9/+15Very cool. I didn't realize it made an officially entry to the Guinness Book of World Records.
- zyklon, on 07/09/2008, -4/+4It's actually what they were going for. If they aimed even higher, I'm sure they would've gotten it.
- mhender, on 07/09/2008, -2/+14The 50,000 digg topics in regards to HELP FIREFOX SET A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD didn't give you a clue?
- mindracer, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2ok even i knew that man.. :)
- Baryn, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Who let you on the computer?? GET BACK IN YOUR CAGE
- MrErr, on 07/08/2008, -5/+16social networking is the new mode of getting your message across. I hope this kills the non-interactive TV.
- ameologger, on 07/08/2008, -10/+1ncie !!
- damian7, on 07/08/2008, -13/+0Yeah, yeah, just wait till Internet Explorer 8 comes out.
- 10 million downloads!!!!
As in the remaining 10 million Internet Explorer users simultaneously uninstall it - alexkreuz, on 07/09/2008, -7/+0I downloaded 5 times. 2 PCs at work and 3 at home. Not sure if (8 mil / 5) is as impressive, but kudos anyway for a nice browser.
- Spuy767, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Don't speak ill of firefox's record. We all know that firefox is the most important human achievement since landing on the moon. I can't for the life of me locate it, but I read on a college's website where a student essentially depoyed a virus that simultaneously downloaded over 300 copies of firefox. He was expelled for misuse of the school's network.
- m3rkabic, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Guinness didn't announce the record right away since they went through the download log to verify unique users, not multiple downloads. 5 PC's is 5 downloads. 5 downloads, 1 PC != 5 downloads.
8 mil is essentially legit for the most part
- ChayesFSS, on 07/09/2008, -2/+8I'd put my money on it just being that much of a better browser than anything else
- zyklon, on 07/09/2008, -2/+9I would say that Mozilla only did a small portion of the work. They crafted an incredible browser, and the real advertisement was in the word-of-mouth plague-like spreading of the information. There was an incredible amount of hype, and an equal amount of delivery. Congratulations to Mozilla and friends for such an awesome thing.
- webkami, on 07/09/2008, -14/+7THATS OVER 9000!!!!!
- booshack, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1What? Nine thousand?

- liquidmetalband, on 07/09/2008, -12/+4Well done. You beat the previous world record of 0. What an accomplishment.
- Harbinger1080, on 07/09/2008, -3/+3While I think you may have missed the point that it helps to further spread the word about an alternative browser to the main stream...
I lol'd, because you're right. - CorrosiveMan, on 07/09/2008, -1/+0Allright
Maybe you can show us how easily you can beat them ?- Harbinger1080, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Yes, because that's the purpose... he was saying that Google set a record in a hitherto un-established category because he clearly intends on beating them. /sarcasm
liquid IS right. They set a record in an unchallenged category. What will be really interesting is to see if anybody tries to unseat them. An unchallenged world record, if you ask me, doesn't mean much beyond the publicity aspect. Now, if MS comes and tries to beat them, and can't even do it with their automatic updater thing, THEN we'll really have a story. At this point, Mozilla has officially "drawn the line." I love that Firefox did so well with this marketing push, but don't forget to step back and look at it for what it was.
(this comment posted by somebody who insists in using Firefox for damn near everything. i use that IETabs addon because if I'm going to be forced to use IE for something, I want it to at least be wrapped inside of Firefox.)

I guess everyone who took part in this downloading spree should also get a mention in the Guinness World Record book then? - HonoredMule, on 07/09/2008, -2/+20"How Mozilla Used an Excellent Product to Set a World Record."
There, fixed it for ya.
Mozilla's gain from social media is just a by-product of NOT being a heartless profit-driven corporation who's benefit to society is measured and billed in full, or a shameless self-promoter with nothing actually worth promoting.- Spuy767, on 07/09/2008, -10/+1"How Mozilla used fanboys to set a world record."
There, I fixed it for you.

- Xihix, on 07/09/2008, -3/+8Oh boy, like I need to know some idiot's opinion on why some stupid concept helped set a world record.
No, the fact that it was a MAJOR FIREFOX UPDATE is why it set a world record.- JasonCox, on 07/09/2008, -4/+1I had to digg you down because you don't know that Firefox is one word.
- mhender, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2I had to digg you down for being a cox sucking spelling Nazi.
- Xihix, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3I actually wasn't sure which way to go, but I fixed it anyway.
- JasonCox, on 07/09/2008, -4/+1I had to digg you down because you don't know that Firefox is one word.
- uptwolait, on 07/09/2008, -4/+2No mention of DIGG?
- mhender, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2I know. I was so crestfallen as well. Would you like to create a support group?
- bouche, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2I have a feeling many diggers think that digg was solely responsible, so maybe this is good for their egos.
- JasonCox, on 07/09/2008, -7/+1The fact that John Doe the IT guy probably downloaded the browser for all 5 of his machines at home and also for half of the computers at his office kinda negates the official number but it's not 8m unique user downloads, it's just 8m downloads.
Regardless of how many times 'user x' downloaded Firefox 3, congrats to Mozilla, Firefox 3 is an awesome browser (and this is coming from the self proclaimed Microsoft fanboy).- GeneralFailure0, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Actually I think I read that they did have to run a filter on the list of ip addresses and eliminate duplicates. Not sure where I found that information but I believe it was in some sort of FAQ on firefox's website when they were setting the record.
- tbranch227, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1That does not eliminate joe blow downloading it onto 5 different machines.
- MickJT, on 07/09/2008, -5/+0"largest number of software downloads (8 M) in 24 hours"
Surely that's non-automated. Windows updates would probably have more.
What about PS3 firmware updates, or XBOX updates, maybe over the air firmware updates for various devices.
... but personally, I think viruses/trojans probably win this, I am sure that at the time it was common for trojans to be sent as attachments, that "software" would have spread more than 8 million times in a single day.- MickJT, on 07/09/2008, -3/+0If you want to be even more pedantic, it's supposed to be the "largest number of downloads for a single piece of software in 24 hours".
The largest number of software downloads in 24 hours (literal interpretation here) would be in the billions probably.
You could have a 2k program on a server and have 1 computer download it a trillion times (ok maybe not that much). What are the rules here? - tbranch227, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Please, you guys are idiots.

- gl77, on 07/09/2008, -1/+31.) Announce a release date for a new and improved version of your product
2.) Let the people on Digg, Reddit, and other sites go wild over this information and generate mass hysteria among these site users
3.) ????
4.) PROFIT! - Technoidatx, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Yeah I downloaded that crap..... all my add ons became obsolete... weeeeeeeeee ... rendering it useless... weeeeeeee
- diceau, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Why the ***** was this article written?
If you're going to claim traffic, have something worth reading and not something everyone already knows. How the hell did this make front page? Digging ring? - Badandy127, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Who gives a *****? They got their app downloaded a bunch. Whoop dee doo!
- TheJimid, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1They just put out the Redsoxfox theme upgrade!!!!!!!!!
- trollick, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Setting this historical record was made much easier by the fact that... there was no official record to beat to begin with.
