DR CLEMENT OKON - ndansmith, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53This is all a very nice commercial for Microsoft's Office suite.
- ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42Yeah, but that's because he's got someone else doing a lot of filtering of emails and then summarizing what he got.
Screw Bayesian filtering, let's all get human assistants to filter out junk!
-olly - dynamit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38As I said below, the picture in the article is fake. This is the real one:
http://hem.bredband.net/dynamit/bill.jpg - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Maybe he and Ballmer have meetings all the time and Ballmer breaks everything in his office.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -20/+39wow... isnt that cool.. he must use thunderbird...
- jkronz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+194 LCD's here. 20" iMac to the left. 24" WS in the middle running XP. 21" Ubuntu on the right. And finally one 21" WS LCD on top of the 24" that runs XP/Snapstream for watching movies and tv.
I use Synergy to bind them together and it works great. I use one mouse and keyboard for the whole setup.
I'll never go back to a single screen. I have access to so much more information at any instant in time. - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Everybody at my work is amazed that I have two monitors on one computer. They just don't see the point of it, but when I have to work on a single-monitor computer I end up alt-tabbing through so many windows I lose track of where I am. The productivity gain from using multiple monitors is incredible.
Now to convince my boss to purchase another LCD so I can ditch this old CRT I have as my second monitor. - ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Exactly, what was the point of this article? I'm not Gates bashing here, because despite my many issues with Microsoft, I think he's a fascinating guy... but CNN is reaching if they think this is real news. This could have just as easily been an online ad for 1.) Outlook 2.) Sharepoint and 3.) Desktop Search.
It would have been a lot more interesting to hear him talk more about which projects he considers "the next big thing" or what projects he personally spends the most time/involvement in.
Reading about how he answers his email is akin to reading about the order in which a politician feeds his dog... a big 'who cares'.
-olly - alecks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Maybe it's just ugly for you....
- DuNzTaR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Seems like a simple guy to me. :)
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Written by Gates himself, obviously it's got elements of PR in it. But it's still pretty interesting if you've ever wondered what his rig is like.
And why act surprised that he's using a bunch of Microsoft products? Well, duh. - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Why is it that every Open Source advocate (i am) thinks that Open Office equals Microsoft Office and Outlook equals Evolution? Especially in a corporate environment? I'd go so far as to say that OSS developers need to get over themselves and make their "alternatives" more like Office and Outlook. What's that you say? MORE like Office? Are you crazy?
All I'm saying is that many of the collaborative features in Outlook and Office work. (i.e.: free/busy searching across organizations, calendaring, calendaring of resources like meeting rooms, etc., sharepoint server and services, tracking changes in documents) I could go on and on, but most OSS developers just laugh and continue on their merry way, not paying attention. This is one of the reasons that OSS alternatives aren't taken seriously in the corporate world. Especially when you tell them that you have to go from having the functionality of Office 2003 and Outlook 2003 to the functionality of Office 95 or 97 and Outlook 97.
I saw this article as more of a wake up call to these OSS developers... - saska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I suppose when you're the richest man in the world, there's nobody left you need to worry about impressing.
- chrisbudden, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I must add that for someone who is a billionaire, he still dresses like a geek :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I bet Bill will come here and reply to you about how much he cares.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10his office might be, but not his house:
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/tech/billgate/gates.htm - Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10When you have that much money, good taste conforms to you - not the other way around.
- ComputerGuru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11My God!! He is old!
All the pics you see of him show him much younger, but this guy (http://i.cnn.net/money/2006/03/30/news/newsmakers/gates_howiwork_fortune/bill_gates_400.jpg) is just one old man.
It makes me sad. No matter how big of a monopoly MS is, this guy is a great man, he truly built himself and his fortune, and still is more modest than those hundreds or tens of thousands less rich than him. Look how simple he is dressed and at his desk.
His fortune has already gone in a large part to charity, and when he is done, all his money (with little exception) goes straight to charity as well...
I wish him a long and healthy life, look how tired he looks in that picture! - retral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Do I spy an origami? :o
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I've run at least two monitors on my main machine since I first got a Matrox Mystique about 12 years ago.. What do you mean when they become more viable? How much more viable do they need to be? You just plug in another monitor. If you're hurting for cash, you can find half decent CRTs being tossed out these days.
- bwd01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Seems like an advertisement, because Gates is famous for his prolific doodlings with pen and paper and notes during meetings. But in that article he claims it's all done with a tablet PC.
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And by "people with way less" you must mean everyone =)
- diggtard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"I use tools like 'in-box rules'..."
(e.g. "Dear Bill, I am in desperate need of money for..." --> 'Deleted Items') - nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I just recently took a tour through a Microsoft building. Makes me wish I lived there! He might be modest but he treats his workers extremely well.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8As opposed to Woz, who's probably got an iMac with 50 laser pointers hooked to it.
Am I the only one who, if in these guy's position, would have a special room built to look like NORAD?? Hell, I've got it planned out to the point where I know where I'd put the "Mr. Coffee/Mr. Radar" - GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@diggtard: Just pick up any PCI graphics card and put it into an open PCI slot and your set. Need more? Get more cards. Radeon 9200 pci (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102360) is a good pick.
- xmetal2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I thought it was a very interesting article. I love to see into the workflow of the world's richest man, and of course he is going to be using and promoting his products. There were plenty of suprises in the article that I found intriguing such as the bland office.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You'd be surprised how well Microsoft products work at a company with near limitless resources.
- ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sharepoint is a pretty nice idea. Basically it allows a team working on a project to collaborate online in a relatively simple way. If you have made changes to some coding, you can post it using Sharepoint, and others can edit it. It keeps track of all the edits (kind of like a 'history' page on a Wiki) so you can see who edited what. It also acts as a repository for any notes/memos/etc that a team is working on for any given project. Any relevant info to the project that needs to be shared accross the team can be put in folders and whatnot, with different access permission levels on it.
Think of it as a Wiki on steroids with a lot of shared email and project work thrown in.
I don't know what/if there is an OSS alternative out there (in regards to your earlier question).
-olly - DougieD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9For being the richest man on the planet, he has a pretty damn modest work area. That was mildly interesting, but I'm very un-impressed ; I expected some really neat and elaborate toys (even my school has those digital white boards he was talking about).
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Although I'm sure he does, it would be rather funny if he were to suddenly found out...
"What? You mean I've been sitting here for all these years and no one told me? What the hell is the matter with you people? All this time I thought I was just clever for getting away with playing all that solitaire and scamming the boss out of 3 flat panels.." - l33t_pSyCo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I like how simple his office is, you would think the richest man in the world would have all fancy furniture and stuff. and i love how the only things on his desk are tech items :P
- sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8So THATS who bought the Origami!
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10^^^ Yes, the richest man in the world, who is also one of the smartest, doesn't know how to use a digital whiteboard. I don't like some of the stuff MS has done in the past but come on people. He's not retarded.
- randyFlagg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here is another look at his office.... http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=126742
- kowgod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I love how his blinds are all closed. Evil sun. It burns us. Say what you will about Microsoft, but you have to hand it to Gates, he is still a role model of geekery.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Multiple CRTs are pretty affordable if you've got the space...
- ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Jobs doesn't use a monitor. He's got a DVI cable attached to his brainstem matrix style.
-olly - davinic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5$75 for a dual video card and $150 for an extra 17" lcd and you're done. That's as practical as it gets.
- megabytehl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Simplicity should never be under estimated. This guy deals with a bajillion things during the day, having a simple work environment with a highly complex back-end flitering system really helps him focus on what needs to be done. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Infact the guy comes across as down right modest in this. Which has to be all the PR polishing put on this; they're working really really hard to change their image. If they keep putting out stuff like this, they will pretty quickly. Top notch PR drivle couple with an interesting look at Bill's day, brilliant. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Jobs doesn't have an office. He doesn't believe in walls. They are too constricting and hinder his productivity. Neither does he wear shoes either. He simply walks around apple, occasionally screams at an employee, and he doesn't do anything, he simply thinks about what should become and it happens. He wills everything into existance by telekinesis.
Jobs bless thee. Amen.
There, that should get me dugg up. ;) - JoshuaWood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes and the foldable keyboard as well. It's good to see that the keyboard actually exists, because it's slick as hell how it wraps around the orgami.
- Pests, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Lets not forget were only shown a small portion of his office. That could be like his `closet` and once the camera turns around you see a room the size of your house with each wall a huge projection monitor, etc.
:) - bigbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6most current graphics card support 2 screens at once. Also you can use a program like maxivista or synergy to add a laptop as an adiitional monitor. Currently my desktop has 2 screens hooked up into one graphics card, and my laptop is used across the network with synergie, effectivly giving me 3 screens.
Also interesting to note he uses tablets, and i thought i was the only one! - L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8... BUT did you read the line that he didn't have one?
I think that it is interesting to see that even Bill Gates isn't provided with the "basic" equipment at Microsoft. These units are not that expensive (around $100 - $200 most). And he even mentions recreating the drawing on his tablet to get around his dilemma... - nitsuj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@chrisbudden
What do you expect? Sequins, cane and a giant top hat? - amish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Bill Gates is simply awesome. He lives by "Simple Living and High Thinking". Except spending the millions he did on his house (which most of you would think is fine) I think he lives exceptionally well. No needless spending, working regularly, pretty much perfect in every sense. Thank You sooooooooooooo much to the person who posted this on digg. Appreciate ur efforts. Thanks.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ive worked for people who have way less than him and they pretty much drab their offices with the most fanciest furniture...(imagine having to hide a desktop inside a big thick wooden cabinet with very little air circulation).
At least Bill's equipment are functional and not for show. -
