- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -36/+119DiggBar sucks.
- acrodev, on 04/09/2009, -9/+86I learned to love it right after I disabled it. Sorry digg, but your suggestions are enough.
- philkav, on 04/09/2009, -7/+73Doesn't really convince me. I've nothing against the DiggBar, its just that when a bar pops up on the top of my browser viewpane, i tend to 'x' out of it. Pure habbit, so it ends up just wasting a couple of seconds...
- ankitech, on 04/09/2009, -7/+60simply.. i have disabled it. I didn't like. It's an overhead.
- Askee, on 04/09/2009, -7/+60I learned to stop worrying when I turned it off.
- TheAngryMob, on 04/09/2009, -11/+54***** the Digg bar. It's About.com 2.0.
Switch it off in Settings > Viewing Preferences. I'll never look back. - AlanFang, on 04/09/2009, -6/+49Your average Digg user doesn't care about the SEO aspect, they care that the bar popping out is annoying as ***** and serves no useful purpose.
- a2fan, on 04/09/2009, -8/+45The DiggBar is too big.
- Taomcdohl, on 04/09/2009, -7/+37I rather loathe the diggbar. It's overhead, and I sometimes find pages loading slowly or not at all until I close the diggbar and load the actual site.
- RetepNamenots, on 04/09/2009, -3/+33When I scroll down, then back up again, I get weird lines from the Diggbar left behind... Anyone else?
- morninglorii, on 04/09/2009, -15/+41I love it. I often would read a story that I liked and forget to actually Digg it afterwards. It's much more convenient to just click the button at the top of the page.
- WhaneTheWhip, on 04/09/2009, -1/+22I don't care about any SEO or technical aspects of the bar... for me it's just annoying. I make it a habit of always checking the address bar to see which site I'm on, the Dig bar does display the URL, but I prefer it where I can quickly copy and paste if needed. Plus, I don't like it when sites frame other sites... the dig bar is not convenient, it's an eye sore and looks like something from 2002. Cant we move on and away from framing other sites?
- alexmuller, on 04/09/2009, -17/+38This was a concern in the back of my mind when they launched it, and I'm glad it's been addressed in a blog post like this. Thanks guys :)
- enkoxx, on 04/09/2009, -6/+27why don't you try "Always hide the toolbar option" which shows up when you click dropdown next to 'x'
- yerdaddy, on 04/09/2009, -7/+25I was never worried about it. It just gets in my ***** way every time I want to read an article and I'm not logged in. If it's such a great feature why not introduce it automatically disabled and let people turn it on who think it does something uselful?
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -8/+25This is a piss poor solution because the only way to get rid of it then is to log into digg just to view an article to skip the damn digg bar. I'm not gonna log in just to browse digg. The default behavior should be the less annoying behavior. They should have made the digg bar something you have to enable, not disable. Lets face it, the digg bar isn't for convenience, it's so that digg can link jack.
- cadmiumpaint, on 04/09/2009, -4/+18i hate the digg bar. Its like digg is trying to own every external site that it links to by hiding the real URL and putting their own "brand" on it. Its just something extra i have to click on to get rid of if i want to share or save the actual link. I'm most definitely turning it off forever now that i've learned in these comments how to do it.
- bar10dr, on 04/09/2009, -2/+16I really hate it
- Anand999, on 04/09/2009, -1/+15The major thing that bothers me about the Digg bar (and similar bars like what Google Images uses) is if I navigate around in the main page content and then close the bar, it will take me back to the original page rather than keeping me where I'm at.
I know this is probably due to Javascript's security model that stops frames from one website see what's going on in the frame from another website. But regardless of the reason, it's still kind of annoying.
It'd be nice if you guys could make an actual browser toolbar (like the StumbleUpon one) that would keep all good features the Digg bar has now without the limitations. - ThinkRad, on 04/09/2009, -1/+15Can't figure out the usefulness of the Digg bar, other than a shortened URL. Like most, my browsing is tabbed. One of the things that really annoyed me was that all the unique little icons on the left side of the tab were now Digg icons, instead of whatever site I was actually at. Felt claustrophobic to me, so I turned it off and haven't given it a second thought.
- FunnyBoyz, on 04/09/2009, -2/+16i dont like it that much..
- cubs0110, on 04/09/2009, -1/+14i don't like the diggbar... i blocked it
- blapierre, on 04/09/2009, -1/+14Then I don't think you will like http://tinyurl.com/tinydigg1
- djmattyd, on 04/09/2009, -10/+23burried as inaccurate.
- blankman, on 04/09/2009, -0/+12I hate the digg bar. it's so annoying. I don't like to have to log in to my account to get it disabled either. I like to just come here once in a while and not hassle with logging in unless I need to digg something.
Why can't they make it opt in? So those who like it can activate it and leave everyone else alone. - Simplysped, on 04/09/2009, -8/+20Diggbar takes a percent off of my acid3 test.
It also killed my father, and raped my mother. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -7/+19Where can we go to turn off the DiggBar?
- kingUssop, on 04/09/2009, -1/+13Yes great, feature, hijacking the web browser with your stupid frame, and not even mentioning to users how to turn it off. It's almost enough to make me forget about digg... web 2.0 is smarmy and full of itself to begin with, and now it's going down the inevitable route of doing desperate things to try and turn a profit.
- orion846, on 04/09/2009, -1/+12disabled
- dooms13, on 04/09/2009, -1/+12It is pretty much a lame StumbleUpon bar. I turned it off, and still use Stumble.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+12"You can now catch up on comments, related stories and additional source content while directly on the story (no more awkward toggling between Digg and the publisher site)."
Who are we kidding? Only If you are a degenerate computer illiterate idiot, will need to use a "bar" to not get lost from the site you were on. - readme, on 04/09/2009, -1/+11The DiggBar is no different than every other toolbar I refuse to install. Sorry guys, turned it off on day on and will never re-enable it. I just don't the the Digg core userbase is the target demographic for a toolbar. Just saying.
The short URL service is however, quite sweet and you don't need to enable the DiggBar to use it. - Apocrypha, on 04/09/2009, -1/+10Or, how I learned to just turn the damn thing off so I don't have to think about it anymore.
- hance, on 04/09/2009, -3/+12I absolutely can not stand the digg bar. Don't try to put a frame around ever dam link I open. The only way to turn the stupid thing off is to log on and turn it off. If anything it should be opt in if you are logged in. It should not be turned on by default and forced on everyone using digg. Toolbars in general suck but the digg bar takes the suckage to a new high.
- jenseits, on 04/09/2009, -3/+12Actually, if you were more savvy, you'd know that spammers are going to love the toolbar. It's a great way to get their crap onto the digg "domain". And it's not SEOs either. It's writers with real copyright concerns and big publishers who are now going to have their traffic numbers appropriated -- the toolbar helps digg inflate their traffic stats (to fool their advertisers) and hurts sites that sell advertising themselves. It's nothing but a mind game digg is playing, grasping at straws pretending they are still relevant in terms of their captive eyeballs, and has zip to do with "keeping content interactive".
The article seems like nothing but smoke and mirrors. - wild, on 04/09/2009, -2/+11When will web designers understand that reading large paragraphs of reversed out text is hard on the eyes?
- Jman5, on 04/09/2009, -6/+14Dugg for Doctor Strangelove reference! :)
- alexmuller, on 04/09/2009, -0/+8Or, instead of all that...
http://digg.com/settings/viewing - cailinanne, on 04/09/2009, -0/+8I've seen it, but only if I use the mouse wheel and only in Chrome.
- blankman, on 04/09/2009, -1/+9it's like those annoying sites that have to put their frame at the top of anything they link to. Not professional at all.
- ericdano, on 04/09/2009, -14/+22No thanks. Digg has no track record for ensuring they will not sell any data they collect to Microsoft (their biggest ad partner) or others. I disabled mine.
- Anand999, on 04/09/2009, -0/+81. Click on "My Profile"
2. Click on "Settings"
3. Click on "Viewing Preferences" on the right hand side
4. Look for the "Show DiggBar?" option and set it to "Never show DiggBar..." - Lynxist, on 04/09/2009, -15/+22Likewise, it was initially a point of concern for me too, but it's nice to see a thorough, adequate reply that puts the record straight.
Thanks guys, rock on. - sfrench, on 04/09/2009, -4/+11We have a privacy policy, it may clear up some of your concerns: http://digg.com/privacy
- strictnein, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7Already turned the thing off. Didn't we try this 10 years ago? People hated it then. I can't imagine a site like Slashdot trying this back in the day (the only analogous site I could think of).
Why people like it now is beyond me. - AttilaD, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6"As always, we continue to monitor ideas"
I KNEW it was SpyWare! - Angostura, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6It would be interesting to see Digg say how many people have permanently disabled the toolbar.
... I can't see it happening though. - ileftfark, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6^ Ding ding ding.
Turned off in my profile, but is there by default if you're browsing and you aren't logged in. - shadydentist, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6I disabled mine, but power to you if you like it.
- kensai111, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6Terrible design, terrible color scheme and in bad taste all around. I should not have to be logged in to not be annoyed. I find myself spending less time at digg and more times at the base sites I'm usually interested in.
