- coldkill3r, on 02/04/2009, -1/+98I have nothing but respect for this group.
- Ozeki, on 02/04/2009, -2/+77They should make a movie about this... but that would be pretty ironic now wouldn't it?
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -2/+74This summer, one man decided enough was enough. . .
- shutaro, on 02/04/2009, -3/+69***** the RIAA!
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -2/+58The RIAA needs a punch in the *****.
- serif69, on 02/04/2009, -1/+46I'd torrent that.
- iceman0113, on 02/04/2009, -1/+46"Nesson took the case, acting as Tenenbaum's attorney, but he outsourced the work of research, strategy, and brief writing to a set of eager Harvard Law students. The students would quickly mount an ambitious defense, not just of Joel Tenenbaum, but of the claim that the RIAA legal campaign was unconstitutionally excessive and improper. Armed with a law library, Twitter, a Web site, and caffeine, the students have already made sure that the upcoming Tenenbaum trial will eclipse the Minnesota Jammie Thomas case for sheer spectacle."
lol, smart man. Turn the work he was tapped to do and give it to the students to do as a project, grade, and a degree. In all seriousness, I think I would've been ecstatic to do something like this if I was asked to do so.
Oh and Judge Nancy Gertner, she pwns. - TheEngineer2008, on 02/04/2009, -1/+36Awesome article. Prof. Nesson has done some great work for poker rights as well. I've had the privilege of meeting with him a couple of times. He's really strong on theory, and he's definitely a strong proponent of liberty.
- lostarchitect, on 02/04/2009, -1/+29i am in favor of *****-punching, when necessary.
- taketheleap, on 02/04/2009, -1/+25This just in: I heard the RIAA are a bunch of douchebags.
- AndrewDB, on 02/04/2009, -2/+25I'd buy, and torrent it.
- Rapter09, on 02/04/2009, -1/+24Respect. Respect Respect Respect.
Way to go Harvard. This is awesome to see, and not only that but its awesome to see the judge in question that was presiding over the Tenenbaum vs RIAA deal to say "You know what, you're screwing this people over, so go settle it, and i'm gonna find this kid a lawyer."
I'm really interested in watching these proceedings if they do allow cameras. I think that would be oddly rivetting, in a very boring way. This is a very relevant issue for every single person on this website. - saivior, on 02/04/2009, -2/+22I appreciate what this group of students is trying to do. Everything about these RIAA lawsuits is excessive. By targeting people who cannot fight back, or don't know how to fight back, the RIAA is essentially turning this into a money grab.
And I don't know what the Government was thinking by allowing this private police force (RIAA) to prosecute these crimes as civil matters.
If these 'crimes' are going to be prosecuted they should be be tried by the Government and not in Civil Court. - stillpissed, on 02/04/2009, -1/+20FINALLY
- santiago1, on 02/04/2009, -1/+18 Jeez, what do you guys got against roosters?
- nextekcarl, on 02/04/2009, -1/+18It would be more ironic if they made a song with DRM about it.
- thefox84, on 02/04/2009, -1/+18The RIAA doesn't have a *****. Period.
- holyskeleton, on 02/04/2009, -1/+18It's good to see someone with a bit more resource standing up to those cooperate scums.
- CoD4, on 02/04/2009, -2/+18I'd buy that.
- thefox84, on 02/04/2009, -1/+14I really enjoyed this article, I'm glad that this professor is taking a stand against them. We need these Nancy Gertner type of judges desperately, I guess it will be a while though, since our entire legal system moves like a turtle.
- Orlandin, on 02/04/2009, -1/+12Trent Renzor could make the soundtrack.
- Leprince, on 02/04/2009, -3/+14This was news like 6 years ago!
- UberNick, on 02/04/2009, -1/+12You can help support them by donating a couple of bucks: http://joelfightsback.com/donate/
- mpdono, on 02/04/2009, -1/+11Kudos to this professor and his students... also to the judge. The vast majority of our judicial system is completely clueless with this stuff, while the vast majority of our legislative system is in the pockets of the RIAA. What a bad mixture. Nicely done Harvard!
- w3ber, on 02/04/2009, -4/+12***** THE RIIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
(fixed) - matt.rubin, on 02/04/2009, -1/+9There is a reason why nobody is caught for pirating at Harvard.
The RIAA is scared!!!! - whoreable, on 02/04/2009, -1/+8Gauntlet? I usually just throw them a middle finger.
- Key2gb, on 02/04/2009, -1/+7great article...one of the few i've actually bothered to read that are over a page...I really hope the video stream happens...Nesson is the man and an inspiration for justice...also incredibly good move to create a class out of this...my econ classes at NYU havent even touched the crisis yet....
- miztaken, on 02/04/2009, -1/+7Simply amazing. Nesson should be considered a national hero for what he's doing. The RIAA , just like most of corporate America just doesn't care about anything other then the money and they'll go through any means to obtain it.
- Maddoktor2, on 02/04/2009, -1/+7Someone, somewhere, sooner or later, will always eventually stand up to a bully and sock him right in the nose.
- longbow486, on 02/04/2009, -2/+7(in tune of ***** the Police) *****, *****, ***** the RIAA
- NeoCortex, on 02/04/2009, -1/+6What's Mark Hamill up to nowadays? We should get him in on this.
- JCEEZ, on 02/04/2009, -2/+6too many syllables
- longbow486, on 02/04/2009, -1/+5"I think you misunderstand the size of this penis, its virtually concave"
- nkassi, on 02/04/2009, -2/+6Glad that a University is finally taking on this bunch of bozos. If they had enough proof to convict they wouldn't need the help of the Universities. And any university that helps is open to lawsuits for doing so and loose some of their reputation. At least Harvard Understands the risks.
- banderwocky, on 02/04/2009, -2/+5Hell yea! I hope the RIAA eats it.
- wonko33, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4maybe saying that there is a picture of a cute girl on page 3 will help people to read it all?
But I agree this is a very interesting article. You also have to commend that judge on her comments - ThatWebGeek, on 02/05/2009, -1/+4a classic must digg, just never gets old :D
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4...you mean a PUNCH IN THE OVARIES!
right? - shadowspawn, on 02/04/2009, -1/+4Good read. But I've seen that face before. Odd...
http://static.arstechnica.com/Tenenbaum/nesson-clo ... vs. http://idiotsyncrasies.com/uploaded_images/Senator ... - inactive, on 02/05/2009, -1/+4not if you say ree-a-a
nevermind i'm an idiot - Gareth321, on 02/05/2009, -1/+4The RIAA should eat acres of dicks.
- copypastry, on 02/05/2009, -2/+4Yeah the RIAA deserves to lose some skin off their penises.
- sugarkang, on 02/05/2009, -1/+3Now where are all those comments about lawyers being scum?
Lawyers are the reason you have civil rights, social security, freedom of speech, women's voting rights.
Well. 3 out of 4 is still pretty good. - sageerrant, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2You're getting dugg down, but there is a certain resemblance.
- mrmudgeon, on 02/05/2009, -1/+3They might. This is not quite over yet as Harvard's claims need to be litigated. I suspect that the RIAA will lose and have their future activities circumscribed.
- 360modena, on 02/05/2009, -1/+3Worse yet, the article mentions "perhaps as much as a million dollars for the seven songs at issue in the case (he risks $150,000 in fines per infringement)".
So really, $150,000 per song. Now *that's* excessive. You could almost buy commercial rights to some old pop music for that.... - thetruthis, on 02/05/2009, -3/+5Buried for MrBabyMan.
- magus_melchior, on 02/04/2009, -2/+4(nerd alert)
Ever remember the scene in Two Towers where Treebeard summons the Ents to battle, and Merry says "Yes...!"
This is the legal version. - MrAwesomeMan, on 02/05/2009, -1/+3Is it just me, or does Professor Nesson look like Professor Xavier from X-Men?
