- eleventybillion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35In my university research days, we discovered a cheap, clean, renewable energy source that was available to everyone at minimal cost. The catch? Completely made from baby penguins.
Happy Feet is the cause of global warming. - Subiklim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Who cares if it's a marketing ploy? It is.
End result is a cleaner earth, still. - ClemsonRocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/prnewswire/DAW01114032007-1.htm
They are actually putting a fair amount of effort and money into trying to lower their energy consumption. - Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Its called passing on the burden. Who cares though how its being achieved, eco-friendly means more baby penguins.
- JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I thought they were talking about the fact the the first gameboy's screen was kindof green...
- captainpete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hey at least they have a ton of money to invest in solar electricity. That's green, for someone like Walmart.
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/12/walmarts_solar.php
I wonder how Google compares (who is also using solar power) - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Big business saves the world or a shallow marketing ploy?"
Not mutually exclusive.
I hope somebody makes a scorecard and I don't care why as long as it's accurate and available. - cafzal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Kudos to Wal-Mart.
- Subiklim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9LOL.
Tell that to the people who can't get any better job than at walmart.
If they want health care WORK SOMEWHERE ELSE. The last thing I want our screwed up government doing is choosing what stores should be illegal/legal. - elev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Actually, they are taking very large steps to be more a more environmentally friendly company. They are making the truck fleet 25% more efficient. They are planning on reducing overall waste, iirc, 10%. These are rigid goals too, not just lip service. Check out http://wal-martfacts.com/featuredtopics/?id=1 Sure it's marketing, but I think they really mean it.
- MCMookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Even if this benefits Walmart's public image, it's beneficial because they're requiring their suppliers to adopt the same environmental standards. It's called strategic corporate social responisibility. Sure it's a marketing ploy, but we shouldn't discard this as greenwash- it's moving us in the right direction.
- D33p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It depends on the color gameboy you buy...What would Walmart know about green they are blue.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11It is amazing how many idiots turn this against walmart. why so much hatred for walmart? It doesn't matter that this is just to boost thier public image, if it helps the environment, it helps the environment, and it is paid for by walmart. It is a win-win situation.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Actually the GB/DS are perfect examples of how we should develop future technology.
Low power consumption, rechargable battery, portable, durable, long lasting and useful. It can potentially offer the same enjoyment that a massive water cooled behemoth gaming PC powered by a 1Kilowatt PSU. All that wasted Gold, silicon, metal and fiberglass... - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Only the original 1990 Gameboy was green. The Gameboy Pocket had a pure grayscale screen, and only color screens followed.
- teknomunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you have to start somewhere...
- obrysii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, most handheld technology is amazing. The 5G iPod draws ~2w when playing music. Laptops can drop to an amazingly low ~10w or less (my Core Duo laptop lasts 4 hours on a 40wH battery).
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i dugg you down for digging him down for saying he dugg him down for saying 'kudos'
(actually, i dugg you up, because that was kind of funny. so kudos to you.) - ipodsweatshop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Technically a marketing ploy, but I'll take more marketing ploys like this one any day.
Oh, and Wal-Mart was the only complete recycling facility in my home town starting back in 1995 or earlier. By complete I mean a huge facility that took anything that could be recycled.
They hate customers and people, but somehow love the environment. - eriksanerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If there's one thing Wal-Mart knows about, it's green...
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Your post shows your vast depth and insight.
- MonkeyBoy87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess all the ISO 14000 standards for this sort of thing aren't good enough for Walmart.
- axonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Its called passing on the burden. Who cares though how its being achieved, eco-friendly means more baby penguins."
Oh great, more dancing penguins singing grand master flash. Just what we needed. - jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7back when I worked at wal-mart, they offered decent health insurance for relatively cheap. no, it wasn't free to me, but that wouldn't make it any better? at the time, I'd rather have more money in my pocket than have them pay for health insurance I didn't need.
if they're such a bad employer, don't work there. if they're such a bad retailer, don't shop there. it's simple. leave the rest of us the hell alone. - BulkHedd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reality is that there are many people who hate Wal-Mart and there is nothing, NOTHING that Wal-Mart can EVER do that will change those people's minds. Even if they decided to call it quits and close all of their stores the haters would complain about all the jobs lost.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Everything has to be just perfect for you.
- kunjan1029, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Slightly OT but Walmart is also the reason of the Code ADAM program, that is not a marketing ploy...
Code Adam is a nationally-recognized "missing child" safety program in the United States, originally created and promoted by Wal-Mart retail stores in 1994. It is named in memory of Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of John Walsh, who was abducted from a Sears department store in Florida and was later found murdered in 1981. Today, many department stores, retail shops, shopping malls, supermarkets, amusement parks, and museums volunteer in the Code Adam program. Also, legislation enacted by Congress in 2003 mandated that all federal office buildings employ the program.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Adam - BulkHedd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some interesting facts were revealed in the show:
Wal-Mart pays it's full-time employees an average of $10.51 an hour (federal minimum wage is $5.15).
Wal-Mart saves families who shop there an average of $2,000.00 a year. - wankerface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd be extremely skeptical (not just very skeptical) if they hadn't already committed to a number of other environmental initiatives in the past couple years. Obviously any major move a corporation like this takes is designed to increase profits first and foremost, but I don't think this is a "shallow marketing ploy". It's a pretty deep marketing ploy. They're recognizing that there's a very large market for products produced and/or sold in a "green" fashion and taking advantage of this. I usually don't believe that laissez-faire is the solution to everything, but in this case the market *might* be getting us somewhere in terms of sustainability.
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -1/+2it says they'll rate the durability of electronics. i wonder how many corporations will pay to have their ratings increased. i mean who here hasn't had a gadget break within a few months from normal wear/tear?
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6i dugg you down for saying you dugg him down for saying 'kudos'
- specialshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is very true and that is why I tried to look at both perspectives as to Wal-Marts agenda. I myself am an easy going guy and look at both perspectives to someone who is complaining to me the best that I can and then relate to them. By doing this I open myself to a lot of criticism, but it helps me understand and explain it better than someone who is just saying that a company such as Wal-Mart sucks. I have my reasons for not liking the store that i work for, but i hear that the main office and some individule stores are great to work for. Does this make me want to quit? nah, I get fed up, but it is only because I care for my fellow workers and my own job. (Some of you can relate) My only arguement is that if you hate something, please know why you hate it, that way if you are asked why you hate it, you can explain your point of view.
- 6502programmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shallow marketing ploy. Wal-Mart gets to take on the appearance of doing something, pushes suppliers around, and scores warm fuzzies with the "conscientious objector" non-shoppers. Soccer Mom in the minivan sees it as a good thing.
Hey, I've got an idea for Wal-Mart.. How about a supplier "employee rights index", where through the use of objective quantitative criteria, products are rated on how their producers treat their employees. It would measure things like mandatory overtime, child labor, living wages, benefits granted, bathroom breaks, plant safety, etc. It could even be dumbed down to the ubiquitous smiley face. Happy and smiling for good suppliers, bruised up and frowning for bad ones. - Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And this is why wal-mart's ploys always work and they continue to get away with so much, because people like those that minus me believe in the "lesser of two evils" argument.
- Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Combine that with their dedication to install solar panels on their stores, and their allocating precious endcap space, and eye-level shelf space to fluorescents instead of higher profit yielding incandescents, it seems like they're shaping up their philosophy.
All without government demands. Go capitalism! - BulkHedd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By the way, this weeks "Penn & Teller: Bulls...!" is about Wal-Mart.
- specialshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok, my bias opinion is that it is a way for Wal-Mart to look good to the public and still offer great low prices. I happen to work for the company and it is a great company to work for although some of the new rules (because of all the lawsuits) are making it harder to say that for reasons that I will not go into. My un-bias opinion is that Wal-Mart is expanding so fast that if you add up all of the waste a typical store produces it will eventually kill the earth with its oldstyle stores. Heres the deal, if 1 person in a room smokes a ciggerette it bothers only them and if they smoke 1 ciggerette an hour, being that there is 2 people in the room and the 2nd person is liberal enough to allow it. Now add 5 or 6 people in that same room along with the non-smoker and then it becomes a problem. Wal-Mart is smart to cover their tracks like this by improving their delivery trucks and making every new store more eco-friendly. I am not a big fan of the company since Sam Walton passed, but props to them for taking nessesary steps to try to be more eco-friendly, eventhough the more the company builds the more waste is produced even if they produce 50% to 90% less waste they continue to build and build and eventually the 10 stores that they build will equal the same amount of waste that 1 of their old stores produce.

Supergreen! - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@itazura
Apparently, you believe in the lesser of two evils, too, since you so avidly support Sony and their PS3.
Self-righteous ***** should practice what they preach. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why don't people push desktop replacement laptops over desktops?
- blueimac540c, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3(disclaimer- I'm no fan of walmart, especially the practice I'm about to use, but bear with me)
Actually, Wal-Mart's "one stop" for everything idea is less damaging than say, having a best buy, a supermarket, clothing stores et cetera spread around town. If people could shop at one place and get everything they need, they'd reduce their fuel consumption by limiting their trips for goods to one location. Granted, Wal-Mart's primary profits come not from people with plans, but from impulse buys, thus furthering the amount of waste... but anyway, the idea of having a central location for all goods is a positive one... it's just that wal-mart is relatively evil b/c of it's "one stop shop" and it's less-than-friendly business practices. - specialshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BulkHedd, Where are you getting your figures? Please tell me that you work for the company, cuz what the company pays their starting employees is usually based off of the average of what the community is that a particular store is located. It is normally a few dollars above min wage for that state. But, if you are doing your research you will also notice that Wal-Mart is NOT hiring full-time "associates" anymore. They are only excepting part-part and will move the person to full-time if that position is needed.
- sam991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll have you know mine is yellow.
- DigginTuesday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, either Digg users really really love Walmart, or we're being manipulated down en masse by their PR people. Anyone here want to defend Walmart?
- oxigen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2shallow marketing ploy. I'll never trust Walmart.
- Vlatro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I for one am sick of all this "Green" *****. I intend to rebel against the movement. Each day I will:
• Dump motor oil onto a patch of soil
• Spray aerosol cans liberally and for no reason
• Only consume fast food that comes in Styrofoam containers
• Urinate in neighborhood recycle bins (I'm actually ahead of the game on that one)
I will continue to do these things until global warming kills everyone (don't hold your breath) or at least until you pansy-assed whining liberal hippie ***** shut up. I don't feel guilty about my effect on the environment, I don't give a rat's ass what kind of world we leave behind for the children, and I'm definitely sick of seeing the market stifled by Green party zealots.
Where's the radical Anti-Green party? Where can I sign up for that? We need balance. Where's the group that advocates dropping napalm on Berkley and the rain-forest? Where are the guys organizing panda hunting expeditions? Where's the jihad against these ass-packing, tree hugging *****? - AramilPHP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
So they call to the electronics industry (only) to go green and prove it, while taking no measures in disposal of waste, shipping procedures, etc, and of course my favorite leaving on every single tv monitor and light 24 hours a day.
Actually, while the TV deal is still a bit of a problem. I worked at one of the first stores to be effected by this movement. All lights that aren't in use, are turned off, everything that can be, is saved and recycled. I hate Wal-Mart just as much as the next employee, but they are taking some surprising steps, and some good ones, whether it's for a marketing ploy or not. - specialshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there anywhere that show streams or i can download? i would love to see it :)
- SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would Walmart make an exception for Apple for the ipod?
Apple has been noted as not being a "green" manufacturer ...Walmart would never ever do anything to cause negative effect on the precious ipod sales. -
