- stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They can hire people with no jobs to ride bicycles rigged to generate electricity by pedaling. Then they can start a Google cycling team and win Tour de France.
- Technojunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article mentions Intel and Transmeta, but doesn't mention the dual-core AMD Opteron server CPUs that they certainly must be using? There are 55W Opteron HE (High Efficiency) dualcores out now. Those seem perfect for Google.
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was a little disappointed, I was expecting the article to tell some ingenious way that google saves power.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I found it interesting that Google uses entry-level systems instead of high-end ones.
- stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People riding bicycles with chains connected to a generator rather than a rear tire is what I meant above.

Similar to that above idea, what about if businesses close down an hour earlier (not much work is done at the end of a day imo) and ride cycles to power their businesses for the next day? This way it helps keep their employees healthy lowering health benefits while saving money on electricity bills. - ravage386, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder how long it will be before google makes some big discoveries in power efficiency and becomes (more) rich.
- stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I meant lowering costs of health benefits^^^
- m4v1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you are all thinking upside down, google doesnt need to produce, or obtain, more power, they need to use less.
- Gargot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They could use all that heat in greenhouses and grow vegetables for their whole staff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> They can hire people with no jobs to ride
> bicycles rigged to generate electricity by
> pedaling.
Uh, I think I see a problem with your proposed business model: the cyclists are using the energy to move themselves from point A to point B (probably going to job interviews, would be my guess).
> if we could find a way to store all that
> energy generated by bicyclers in india
> and china.
What part of the "hire people with no jobs" thing didn't you understand? If anything, they're going to be hiring Americans... which is good, because, statistically speaking, Americans won't have to eat anything extra in order to produce the energy google needs.
Mind you, I'm not bias about who my electrons come from... just as long as my Indian click-through army still has time to do their thing.
> And with that 10 cents, they can buy a few
> grains of rice for food, so
No, actually 5 cents will be paid to the bike farm and battery pipeline owners for use of their infrastructure... so the poor bastards will just have to figure out how to feed themselves on the remaining 5 cents. - jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So turning off the lights is worthy of mentioning??? So does that mean other companies don't turn off the lights when no one is in the room???
- nickster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you look at the Google Mini (their search rack for small companies) it runs a Pentium III, which I am guessing would be more than enough for the thing. Makes you wonder what their other computers are running.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> it runs a Pentium III
Dual Pentium IIIs.
Keep in mind that Intel went back to the PIII core for the Doathan. - Whomever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should hook up the hot side of their A/C to stirling engines and recover some energy from their waste heat. It seems like this would help more than turning of the LEDs in the individual machines...
- pdlevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is gonna buy a company to make them energy just like they bought a company to make google talk
Google could just stop letting the yahoo people come and eat for free then burn the new food surplus as energy - apbt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You don't think Tom's Hardware is a credible source of tech info?
- hoodedrobin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google is so rich it should just buy a powerplant"
Uhh its only 1/4 as rich as Microsoft. But its not a bad idea, nuclear fussion would be a good idea. If france can do it anyone can... - D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google can be powered by fanboyism. There is enough Google fanboyism to be put into packs and sent to Google. This is a renewable resource and Google wouldn't need to pay the fanboys because they would do anything for Google.
Or what about dissent towards Microsoft? - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GPower (beta) will solve it.
(google power) - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A new low on digg - this is the most retarded comments section ever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have a better idea, wind turbines made out of solar pannels...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0o.O ROFL turbines made out of solar pannels..
/me patents. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a good idea actually o>O
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well atleast I would power a good company unlike Microsoft.
- deathBOB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Better than WinPower!
- Pulse_Instance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What a poorly written article, I do not claim to be that great a writing (my comma skills are terrible), but I found it difficult to read to the bottom of that page rife with spelling errors and grammatical issues that someone over the age of 12 should know how to avoid.
- ph3rny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Doesn't look like a very credible source
there are spelling errors and unfinished raw html tags - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They should move their base of operations to Antarctica. Then they won't have to worry about the extra costs of cooling and will actually be looking for procs that put out MORE heat to keep them warm.
- Russell102, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google is so rich it should just buy a powerplant
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"OMG guyz, GOGGLE could by teh sun and use dat pwr!!11!"
GOGGLE? what the hell is goggle? This is about google.
j/k :D - danio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0 tsupersonic you are fat?
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I am fat? That was a good insult. Go back and run on your hamster wheels.
- deathBOB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0or maybe we will have iPower?
- smartguy2045, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0And with that 10 cents, they can buy a few grains of rice for food, so they have the energy to cycle more.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Don't forget my hamster idea!
- Axlrose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0OMG guyz, GOGGLE could by teh sun and use dat pwr!!11!
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Use hamsters.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1All Google need is to build some wind turbines and erect a load of solar panels, problem solved.
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Who ever wrote this column saved some cpu cycles by not invoking the spell checker.
Hoo Hoo Robin, I invented the spell checker. Tell'em Fred.
O&A Party Rock
Happy Birthday Lil Jimmy
www.opieandanthony.com - Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Just seems to me like Google is covering their asses- They mentioned Global Warming, which is utter *****.
~Soniti - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Think of the shipping costs!
It'll cost a lot of money to get those battery packs onto the planes and shipped to Mountain View, CA. - zapada, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0"They can hire people with no jobs to ride bicycles rigged to generate electricity by pedaling. Then they can start a Google cycling team and win Tour de France."
Hah, you crack me up. - danio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0but what will power the bikers?
- impstek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0LOL @ steve
- nerdful1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1How much is being spent in wasted energy lighting Google's property? something like 3-6 billion dollars of light is wasted trespassing to neighbors property and the sky in the U.S. . See darkskydotorg for info. Maybe Google could bea leader in that concept..dark skys like ponds trees, and grass in a city park, why lose the sky?
