- MikeL123, on 05/19/2008, -0/+25I still don't understand what the point of Friend Connect is... but it cracks me up that Facebook is railing on it because I can opt-in to let it use my public name and public photo... when Facebook's own Beacon used my name, photo, other sites I visited, and things I did on those sites, without me knowing.
- dsoleil, on 05/19/2008, -2/+21I think google may be a bit presumptuous in thinking that everyone has friends...
- warrior007, on 05/19/2008, -1/+11 1. Google Friend Connect puts users in control over whether they're connected to their data on Facebook.
2. Google Friend Connect only reads a small amount of user data from Facebook, and does so using Facebook's public APIs. We read the Facebook numeric id, friendly name, and public photo URLs of the user and their friends. We read no other information.
3. The only user information that we pass from Facebook to third-party applications is the URL of the user's public photo.
4. Google Friend Connect does not permanently store any user data retrieved from Facebook. - ElbertF, on 05/19/2008, -1/+9Except Facebook is blocking Google Friend Connect now..

Its not from people who would already have an MSN or AIM account, but from people just adopting an IM network. The range of clients is something going for them too, Jabber ftw

Alealea, have you heard of a place called Brazil? have you heard of a social network called Orkut? - alealea, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Google bought Orkut. They didn't develop it. Friend Connect was not developed by Orkut but by few Google employees.
- wakari, on 12/16/2008, -0/+0A new integration of Friend connect looks great. This website seems to be using friend connect as the only way their users can log in. Please check it. www.connecttips.info
- BatmanStan, on 12/12/2008, -0/+0I know this is an old story, but google just updated friend connect with a bunch of new features. You should check it out.

"What does Google have to do with friends? Google is search company, right? They have no Social Network strategy"
They have a social strategy from the beginning (not successful). It is called Orkut. - njbignell, on 05/19/2008, -2/+11) You technically do sign an agreement, whenever you login to friend connect on a new site you are asked what data they can use
2) Dude, it's a free service. Isn't that enough? - OliverKlosoff, on 05/19/2008, -1/+0Sadly, not the IM field.
- alealea, on 05/19/2008, -4/+1What does Google have to do with friends? Google is search company, right? They have no Social Network strategy and to think that they could claim one by jumping on the back of others that do it successfully is approach that is bound to fail. In order to grow their share price they constantly need to release something and are doing it very "well" with a bunch of half-baked strategies - Open Social, Android, Friend Connect... Where did they get the idea that they should be social network aggregator? They have no social networking experience whatsoever, no privacy protection experience whatsoever (unlike Facebook and other Social Networks that have to deal with these issues on a daily basis). I am sure that Google will release something like Digg Connect one of these days. Doesn't matter that they don't understand the concept behind Digg and the daily problems in maintaining service like that.
- AHerdOfElk, on 05/19/2008, -5/+0Google seems to be grabbing a piece of everything these days. I think it's time they chill out and focus on what they do best - finding stuff.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -8/+2Google = God
- njbignell, on 05/19/2008, -6/+0One thing I find interesting is that they say they're only passing the profile picture URL to third parties but that means they can easily strip it down to you numerical ID from which they can access anything you've made visible on your page.

What is Digg?
