- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Ugh, that part of BSG annoyed me. They did a fair job of keeping the show realistic, but that visual reading of the Cylons "hacking" their way through firewalls (not to mention the whole way their system was set up) was freaking absurd. Also, didn't the guy claim that he had programmed 5 software firewalls in a matter of hours? Norton can't even get their single firewall right after thousands of man-hours of work...
It seems like no TV or movie producers want to take the time to hire a CS consultant. Seriously... great example - 24, season 5, where that one bad guy in CTU said he'd "Read the binary" to figure out where Chloe was accessing the system. And this was from one of the most popular shows on TV right now... - javip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21virgin by choice
hahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha - killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22A Cylon logic bomb?
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19@Anpheus
I never said I stopped watching. I still watch and enjoy BSG. I'm simply saying that inaccuracies are rampant in nearly all TV shows and movies, and producers seem to think it's okay to throw logic out the window when it best suits their desire for pseudo-sophistication or "excitement".
By the way, I had put "(and physics)" immediately after the letters "CS", but edited it out since I didn't feel like pointing out any physics mistakes. It happens in all fields; Numb3rs, for example, drives my dad (who has a Ph.D in Applied Mathematics and teaches graduate-level Operations Management) absolutely insane. My mom likes to point out all the absurdities in most of the medical shows (she's a nurse).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that TV is (in a way) "corrupting" knowledge by presenting absurdities as fact. So, in essence, TV is making us dumber. Who'dathunkit? - Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Ten bucks says wikipedia is a better place to start than asking in a Digg comment thread.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Learn how to program - creating logic bombs is an easy task. You know what else is easy? Arresting and prosecuting you for making and using one.
- UCFMark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I saw this and immediately thought of the time that Captain Kirk destroyed a robot by confusing it with logical paradoxes. Damn, I should go get a life or something... or at least stop watching so much Star Trek every day.
- Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Really, you shouldn't look to shows being perfectly accurate in any area of science. If you're going to bitch about the accuracy of their computers, why are you fine with them jumping around in space?
I'd rather give them the benefit of the doubt and presume that they used the wrong terminology or different terminology than say, "FRACK THIS SHOW!" and stop watching. - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11This sentence is false!
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Bender, cover your ears!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8not that you would know
- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The payload of a logic bomb is usually pretty devastating to the company under attack."
DO BACKUPS.
I hope no companies still have such piss-poor backup procedures that a logic bomb would do any more than crash a server for a day and possibly toss the day's work. - sven007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sounds interesting. Where can i learn more about these so called "logic bombs" :)
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@Akaji
Wow, that was really interesting. I never even thought about that, I just took Numb3s at face value, and I watch a lot of medical shows and don't think twice. - vuke69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm fond of a variant of this called a dead man switch. You don't log in, or whatever trigger event is convenient, for a specified amount of time, say a few weeks or so (to account for a possible vacation), and it goes off.
I would never use one to do damage, just mutually humorous pranks. Like a new login message, or replace everyones background, stupid stuff like that. - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wtf?
- sunimoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The topic might be interesting but the article is ridiculous.
- LiberalsSuckAss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3More likely, they pushed a button on their laptop, and their screen started flashing UPLOADING LOGIC BOMB.
I know, because I've seen that happen first hand in a movie before. - drmangrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone savvy in computer forensics can still find ways. There are only so many people who have not only the knowledge, but the oppurtunity to employ a logic bomb. The list can be further limited by identifying known or possibly disgruntled employees. If you can deduce the approximate date of insertion to the system, you can review various network logs to see who had access. Chances are the code was developed on the company computers, simply running a deep scan into all computer files on the network for programming keywords with a good date range can easily narrow it down further.
There is always a way to track someone down, nobody knows all the methods, it's just a matter of finding the footprint in the sand. - basket548, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2However, the issue with financial firms is that knocking out a day's worth of information can easily be worth several hundred million dollars...even the loss of 15 minutes of data would throw a company like UBS into complete chaos. That's why cases like this are taken so seriously.
- BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just one question. Did the employee load the bomb through the....UBS port?
*ba-dum-pish*
(comedic drums) - inotocracy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats pretty interesting, never thought of doing something like that (not that I would course) :P
- tardpicard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed.
I thought it was "How stuff works" not, "What things are". - user98887, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This does sound silly. I agree with @Rikkochet at most they should only be out a days work.
However, if you are serious about damaging a computer system or companies data, have the logic bomb run once a day/week changing small amounts of data. This way it could go on for weeks (or months) before being detected and the backups are screwed.
Oh and cover your tracks very well or your out 3 million sharing a cell with Buba - chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I should do that at my school ;)
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I saw this and immediately thought of the time that Captain Kirk destroyed a robot by confusing it with logical paradoxes."
Didn't they do that in about a dozen episodes? - aspirinetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh i thought they would teach how to write one :(
- nomad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Happiness is belonging.
- synwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they called this a negative trigger in the article.
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The reason for this is of course, because doing it the current way would simply be much too boring for laymen to watch. I'd never want to watch someone writing code, compiling, running unit-tests, finding an error, writing code... etc..
Also with regards to the BSG firewalls comment. It isn't all that much of a leap of faith to assume that in the future, there could be software techniques that enable rapid software development. Take someone that knew only machine code programming (with punch cards for example) show them how easy it is to create things using python and they would have a hard time believing you as well. - unicronband, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do not panic. This is not a logic bomb.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3GIVE HER A THOUSAND CCs of MORPHINE, STAT!
GET those FTL drives ready.
I have the general on a sub-space connection, he says your fired. - BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ bherring
Oh, it's no problem. I want replace words with other words all the time. Like the word "to" with a space! - Brickhaus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Article is incorrect.
A logic bomb is when I tell my friend (or former friend in some cases) just how stupid he/she is by a hearty serving of logic that I will drop onto his/her once empty cranium. - ropers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lame article. Inaccurate title. Didn't explain how a logic bomb works. Should have been named "what a logic bomb is". While it may be impossible to enumerate all the way in which a logic bombs can work, it should at least explained a few examples in order to justify the name.
Also, it should have stated the one single way to PREVENT logic bombs:
Don't screw your employees. Keep them happy and treat them fairly, even when firing them. - Anonymous3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So logic bomb = bo with time delay? Wow, this stuff has come a really long way from what 10 years ago
- teckieee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1how can one bomb be so clever deleting files but stupid enough to leave a trace? on that poor but stupid man's case.. don't get mad get even. he could have waited for a year or two to trigger that logic bomb.
- bherring, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The ONLY reason I won't digg that comment down is because I kept catching myself wanting replace UBS with USB as I was reading the article.
- nonchallant0819, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0This is a great story... found this one through http://www.google.com

- thomas41546, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This isn't a very signifacant article... everything a computer does is based on logic
and its only a bomb cause well it used time for executing the function - nunbot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3if you get to the point in your career where you start thing about doing this; get a new career!

You? Well, I don't know you. I don't really care though.
As for killing myself... do I have to? Like I said, I enjoy life, and really don't care to end it right now.
Ohhh, I get it, you were comparing the fact that I enjoy posting comments on Digg in my free time. And by free time, I mean time when I should be doing work but would prefer to procrastinate.
Anyways, you get to join my block city. No, not Legos - blocked/reported people. I'm rapidly approaching 100, so you should feel special about being part of that.
