See, stereotypes work both ways. - Crumpet46, on 04/30/2008, -0/+12Alot of pepole tend to say that, but the house of Lords usually ends up being closer to the public opinion than the government. Just look at the terror detention laws.
- Klarth, on 04/29/2008, -1/+11So... One of our major government bodies now has, of all things, a library, some offices, a few restaurants, surveillance cameras and broadband? And on top of that, it has a website, too?!
Gasp! How unbelievably modern. - Funrunner, on 04/29/2008, -0/+9Just wondering, do the Lords play Buzzword Bingo during the Queen's annual address?
- dsmx, on 04/30/2008, -1/+10Also the house of lords tends to be filled with people who actually have knowledge on what there voting for or against.
- gudnbluts, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8Plus we'd need to figure out what to replace it with. An elected second house is too political, look at America for instance. The last thing you want is for the second house to vote along party lines all the time. So you still end up with an appointed second house. Why not just call it "The Lords"?

The House Of Lords is scene during the state opening of Parliament on June 20, 2001. - SanjayM, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6The lords are effective because they aren't elected. They can vote on their own honest to goodness opinion instead of being affected, afraid, or influenced by the opinions and vagaries of the crowd.
- widgetmaker, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Shut up this post has nothing to do with the machines of government, the Huse of Lords has nothing to do with the Freemasons, it is also, along with the Law Lords (members of the House) the last bastion of defence of civil Liberties and free speech in this country.
- csrster, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5_Hanging_, dear boy. Shooting is for Mexicans.
- RevoFM, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5I've always wanted to be a mouse wiggler. Don't trash talk my dreams.
- RoflcopterFUEL, on 04/29/2008, -2/+7These comments suck!
- kd1s, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations house and senate chambers are all wired up and equipped with PC's at every desk.
The sad part is that they have to hire a guy to go around and wiggle the mice so the machines don't go into sleep mode. If the I.T. staff had any clue they'd just change the power settings but no, it's easier to have a guy go wiggle the mice.
All legislators have an email address and their own home page which lists their contact info, current projects, etc.
And they're responsive too. I've had correspondence with several legislators via email. - vw2005, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3BFD ..... House of Lords has it's own CSPAN
........... another channel nobody will ever tune to (till they're 85) - Myonosken, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Only when the Commons works.
- Myonosken, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Bribery isn't as bad in the UK. Plus, the Lords are all filthy rich (or priests) so are actually less open to bribery.
- trollick, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2I, for one, welcome our new high-tech (Over)lords!
- Disregard, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3All that processing power just to play Sudoko and check the Daily Mail website.
- linuxpenguin, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1You're probably joking, but I have ADD and I know that's the wrong word to use. . . so my guess is he doesn't know the difference. I'm surprised to see how many people don't. In classes when I have to look at other people's papers, it seems these kinds of words always get swapped.
- Kenzan, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Retards with Guns.
Never forget that. - widgetmaker, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3Would have Dugg you if you'd spelt bury correctly.
- Cerebron, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I like the way the US adopted technology, voting with a button, and not paying any attention to who is pushing it. Not.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG6X-xtVask - smithchr, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I wonder if it was a member of the ADHD generation or just someone who can't figure out when to use each version of a homonym. Wait... is there a difference?
- HonoredMule, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Being influenced by the crowd wouldn't be so bad, but what politician is? Money is so much more persuasive.
- casuallyevil, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1They can't use computers! It might make them less inefficient!!!
- Kenzan, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1I also understand that the English are cold and humorless.
Thanks for providing the evidence that this particular stereotype is correct. - polko, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0the words "Lords" and "High-tech" just don't match!!!!
- Myonosken, on 05/01/2008, -1/+1I understand all Americans are retards- probably why you didn't press 'reply'.
- itsfini, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Not long now before the Law Lords move across the road - that really will signal a modernisation of the House of Lords.
- 3leggedHorse, on 04/30/2008, -3/+1 It's archaic, the same as the rest of government.
- ANTITH3SIS, on 04/30/2008, -4/+1"The House Of Lords is scene during the state opening of Parliament on June 20, 2001. (AP)"
This is a typo right? Please tell me this is a typo. - AdmiralJimbob, on 04/29/2008, -6/+3The only way the House of Lords could be adapted to modern society would be to abolish it.
- carrognia, on 04/29/2008, -8/+3seriously, what?...
old people with macbooks... ftw... - Nhmarine, on 04/29/2008, -7/+2That's good for them, maybe with faster government they will actually get something done... nah, they will probably just sit around playing WoW
- carrognia, on 04/29/2008, -12/+6please... burry me.
.. - 3leggedHorse, on 04/30/2008, -10/+1 House of lords is no different to the free masons. I hate how the British bathe themselves in their past, It's the same with a lot of other countries as well.
A democracy is supposed to be a well oiled engine for enhancing peoples lives for the better, not some ***** up looking pagan ritual.
I would move Parliament to some modern energy efficient building, and open the old building to tourists and put the money made from that back into the country. - AlienMushroom, on 04/29/2008, -11/+1Where is "God's" power?
- Kenzan, on 04/29/2008, -16/+2Now if you can all just start going to the Dentist, i think you're all set.
