- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41Homeless dude got $100 out of it. Good for the owner for not forgetting a good deed.
People should always remember to give homeless people the benefit of the doubt. Yeah, maybe a lot of them are "bums" and "alcoholics" and "druggies", but that doesn't mean all of them are, or all of them are lazy. You gotta treat each of them with respect until they loose your respect (like refuse food but take money, like one did to me the other day... that was a BUM!) - Cryptecks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32I don't care if it isn't tech or world related, but I wish their more people out there who are this selfless and caring.
- imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34I had a guy come up to me a few weeks ago while I was walking from my car to my bands practice space. Bum comes up to me and asks if I have 8 dollars so he can buy food for his kids. I usually don't cary much cash, and I only had a buck in quarters for a gas station soda. I offer it to the guy, and he says "Man, I don't want that", and walked away. I've never felt so insulted in my life!
Also, why would you keep 900 dollars in your wallet??? - syko21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The guy did a nice thing, he realized that 900 bucks is a lot of money and returned it to the owner. I bet many people who are able to life comfortably would not have made the same decision, I applaud him.
Edit: I think the site has suffered the digg effect. - kyle9013, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Wheres the proof that he died :) but yeah that guy did a great thing, and so did the lady in return. i even help out homeless ppl out ill give them some extra pocketchange if i have any.
- baudbwoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@longofest = I live by "Respect is given where respect is due" I blindly respect a person until they give me a reason not to respect them. I agree not all homeless people are bad, just in a bad situation and that does not make anyone bad. That said I used to give and actually sometimes still due but I had to jack a dude up one the transit subway for scamming me, (I’ll make it quick) he (dress as a student) asked for money to top off his fare so he could catch the regional bus I asked how much he still need and gave him the rest of what he still needed. Seconds later I hear him still asking others, I was furious, I grabbed his collar (like in the movies) and rush his ass up against the wall (Detroit taught me well) and took my money back. He's lucky my lady told me to let his ass go. Funny thing is I saw him a few months back still begging. But I don't look at him as a ambassador for all street people, its an isolated incident. @nydan I don't think I will bother reading the article as its not tech but digg for the title and the knowing that the human spirit lives on and people aren't as bad as CNN says they are.
- celerate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I wonder how much alcohol that eight bucks would have bought, even a dollar and some change could have bought his kids a bag of chips if he really cared about feeding them.
I'm sorry if that sounds cynical, but I spent a few years in a place where people like that were around. When people came up asking for money they'd make up all sorts of excuses, and if you handed them anything the first thing they would do is walk to the nearest liquor store even if you were still watching them. - DannySpace, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Why can't a janitor have $900.00 cash? That's just a horrible assumption. Those people work their ass off to clean up after you and contrary to popular belief, they make a good enough living to have $900.00 cash. Respect those who do the dirty jobs that most won't. Speaking of respect; that is what I have for the homeless gentleman who returned the wallet in the first place. What a compassionate gesture. You could learn something here if you just opened your mind a little.
- Justinpirate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Your comment of this being a dupe is a dupe!
- bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8not tech related, but still cool. As long as digg doesnt become a human interest website, a story like this every once in a while is good to put things in perspective.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@clintweir - it is some what about Democracy, but that doesn't change the fact that it is also a tech news site.
http://digg.com/faq
"Digg is a technology news website that combines social bookmarking, blogging, RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control."
So while the users are in control (Democracy) it is within the context setup by the site founders. - harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Tom - gee I don't know what I was thinking, expecting tech related stories on a tech site.
Guess the FAQ on what Digg is was just for fluff. - schnitzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"But the narrator is inclined to think that by attributing overimportance to praiseworthy actions one may, by implication, be paying indirect but potent homage to the worst side of human nature. For this attitude implies that such actions shine out as rare exceptions, while callousness and apathy are the general rule. The narrator does not share that view. The evil that is in the world always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence, if they lack understanding. On the whole, men are more good than bad; that, however, isn't the real point. But they are more or less ignorant, and it is this that we call vice or virtue; the most incorrigible vice being that of an ignorance that fancies it knows everything and therefore claims for itself the right to kill. The soul of the murderer is blind; and there can be no true goodness nor true love without the utmost clearsightedness." --Albert Camus, "The Plague"
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8on both ends of that story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Man, I hate this story, but at least I read it before I commented. It was a lady's money, not a dude.
- alf86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Does anyone else find it sad that honesty is news. I saw reports about this and everyone acted like it was the craziest thing they had ever heard. What does that say about our society?
- pkkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have a buddy who does janitor work and he rakes in $40K / year, thats not too shabby if you ask me. :)
- the_penguin_boy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I wish there were more people out there like this guy. Good morals are something really important, but extremely rare and unappreciated I'm sad to say. If I had my own business, I'd hire this guy on the spot.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At this point I'm just kinda amused that this story (as of this posting) is running something around -380 combined comment diggs.
I think we set a record for a link with less than 100 comments. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't know about anyone else, but I can't believe she only gave him $100. Does she not realize that if it weren't for the homeless man, she would have never seen that $900 again? I would have given the guy a little more money than that.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5He did the right thing. I fhe handed it to police and no one claimed it, he's got $900.
If he just took it, one; he would feel like *****, and two; it's not like $900 can buy you a lot of housing and whatnot. Maybe a nice set of clothes to go to interviews in, but he got $100 out of it which is nice anyway. - AlexH, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7This is very cool. Just put yourself in this guys position... You're on the street, no money, no home, no job, life's looking like a dead end, and you still have enough class and self respect to not steal 900 bucks and a wallet (probably filled with credit cards). I doubt 75% of the people reading this would have had the backbone to do the same. That my friends = 1 digg. ;)
- TA_Superman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11I never believed in the whole giving to the homeless thing. First of all there's charities setup for these people. Alot of the homeless have become homeless through some doing of their own, while some are just victims of circumstances. It's like the old saying says give a man a fish he will eat for one day, teach him how to fish.. I think giving homeless free handouts is not doing them any favors as they will get used to this habit to get by and not really get any closer to getting out of their situation.
I heard a story about a homeless guy who went to one of these homeless outreach centers. They helped him get clean up, bought him some clothes so he could find a job and within a year he had his own place to live again with a good income. You can't always rely on people feeling sorry for you all your life. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What the hell is wrong with you?
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4At least the news points out there are still good people out there no matter how crappy their life has been.
- snowbooch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6maybe he decided not to mess with someone carrying around a grand in cash
- mattyG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thats why you go over to the 7-11 or whatever yourself and buy food for them, that way they cant blow the money on beer or whatever. and if they dont take it then you'll know the real reason theyre out there. there are some "bums" who make thousands.
- lb3ll, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I usually offer to buy food, if they refuse it I know they are just looking for beer money, but often times they will be quite grateful for the food I buy them.
- SnapETom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a feeling "he died two days later" is going to be the new digg.com inside joke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah I guess so, but man those editors... And God save us all from the comments. I don't think there's something wrong with the story really, it's just there are 15 slots on the front page. That's it. There are 50 stories like this every day, and if that what goes here, people looking for tech should go from here.
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Always treat them with respect, but never give them money.
And I agree, who in thier right mind carries $900 in cash. - Hacktivist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I absolutly hate it when homeless people approach me and ask for a specific amount of change. If they just ask for any spare change I'll give then what I can but if they ask for 5 bucks I walk away.
- hansdg1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4yeah it's amazing what perfect timing does...
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where's a homeless guy gonna put some nice clothes and where will he find a wash? That is where most people don't understand homeless people. They think it's like one small step away from prosperity. Homeless people would probably have a lot of health concerns as well.
- UmmoSirius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Regarding the comments of popfrogs & others: Replace the phrase "homeless person" with "cracker," "jew," "catholic," "liberal," or any other group descriptor and think about what you're saying. That's the kind of mindset that gave Hitler a career.
Okay, enough preaching. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I think one story says very little about our society.
Tthe crazy part is finding a wallet with $900 in cash, not the returning it. A lot of people do this kind of thing, although it's not often news. It's called self-respect, and even though he's homeless, the guy has enough of it to decide to act decently. I don't think it's the exception at all, but the rule. - morph777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yep. The homeless guy insisted on remaining anonymous and paying for his own food. And I'm with you, I doubt most of us reading this would have done that.
Dugg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Amen. When's the next Photoshop contest?
- popophobia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nice to see some nice people are still around. Dugg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Here is another site with the story if you cannot access the given site: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/bizarre/3804391.html
Cool story! - perkelation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@imjustabill and @celerate ...are you kidding me? soda and chips for starving people? I don't know about you, but when I'm hungry I want FOOD
- bryantee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I give food anytime I have some. Coupons, maybe some change in my pocket. It's easy to tell if someone is genuine. This is a good guy, he totally deserved that reward.
- GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Regarding the comments of popfrogs & others: Replace the phrase "homeless person" with "cracker," "jew," "catholic," "liberal," or any other group descriptor and think about what you're saying. That's the kind of mindset that gave Hitler a career."
Are you an idiot?...bums are stupid...most are just lazy...approximately 10% have mental problems, and 30% are born into it...so at least 60% are just ***** lazy...and we pay for them to do so...well...i dont...unless its through taxes - metrosquad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is a great story! But people, your not supposed to give money to homeless people. Don't think your being rude. Make eye contact and say your sorry. Give indirectly by donating money to shelters, food vans, etc. Super easy to find info about this. And most of the time, if you really care, it's tax deductible. Ive done it many times.

It was always something along the lines of "I nee' 76 cents fo' samwhich." No "Can you give".. just "I need". Really bugged me, they know you got change at a car wash. But they also know you don't have exactly 76 cents, they will talk up the first bill you pull out. One time I planned on praticing some of my LINE training on them, see if it works, but I thought I'd better not, heh. Security cameras...
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3true ethics---neither derives from nor depends upon popular opinion--nor is it influenced.
Some of the idiots here wouldn't know genuine ethics or morality if it bit them in the ass.
Go ahead...mod this down!
You can't touch this!
LMAO@idiots - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Good.
- Chicken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3You mean what does it say about humans?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Personally I hate bums, I had to work in downtown Dallas for a year and at the end of that year, a group of bums stole my car while 2 bums watched. When police questioned the 2 bums that saw it getting stolen, they were high on paint thinner and drunk and didn't see *****. The cops found my car a week later, stripped to the bone, no engine or anything.
For that whole year, it was one thing after another with the goddamn homeless. One guy was always walking around yelling and would piss on our side patio (sandwiched between two buildings) every damn night. Another girl liked to get naked and yell '*****' and she also had a thing for pissing on the patio. Every morning we'd have to hose down the patio and mop it with bleach water. My boss had the windows smashed on his van at least 3 times just to steal a handful of tools and a carton of cigarettes.
There were, however, exactly 3 good people among the 100's I'd see on a daily basis. So I can say, unequivocally, that in downtown Dallas, 97% of bums are scumbags and crooks, and 3% are decent human beings. If you ever wanted to kill someone, you could take them out beside City Hall, because you would *never* get caught (no cops downtown) and the witnesses would be too high to recognize anybody. -
