- greighn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hi Folks,
As the builder and owner of "The Bridge" theater, I thought I'd chime in and answer some of the questions posed. Let me start with the easy ones:
1) Yes, I have dated women. I am married for 23 years with a teenage son (both of which love the theater).
2) Although the theater looks expensive, it cost me less than the cost of finishing basement room via a contractor. I did all of the work myself over two years of nights and weekends for a total cost of around $16,000 including equipment, furniture, and all building materials (dry wall, studs, carpet, etc.)
3) While it may not appear so, I am not a hard core "Trekkie" per se. I do not frequent conventions or wear a uniform around the house, etc. I do like Star Trek and science fiction, but I'm certainly not consumed by it. A home theater, like most good theaters, is designed to be a place to get away from reality. That was the basis for my design.
4) While I appreciate that the look may not be to everyone's taste, it was not built for anyone but me (and my family). I'll try not to think about those who don't like it each time I sit back and enjoy a movie on the big screen. ;-)
My thanks to those who took the time to write and comment. I hope it inspires other people to have some fun and not be so uptight.
To the bridge!
Regards,
Gary - Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This image pretty much sums it up:

How u know the guy is not getting laid.. That is the stereotype of the Nerd that only idiots will refer to. You maybe suprise to see how much action some "Nerds" with a nice house, nice car and a good paycheck can get. Maybe you guys need to stop watching movies and getting your references from TV and magazines..
If these home theater would have been build by a NFL, NBA, TV or MOVIES superstar, then it would have been the coolest thing on the planet.. and the guy would have been "eccentric" not a Nerd
Do your homework before posting dumb comments. Digg has become a breathing ground for lemmings. - chazzyMooMoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, his basement is sweet. I think we need to applaud his hard work and mad carpentry skills! People are just jealous. Maybe he has money and time to do this because he saved up and did his own work. Now about it ruining property his value. He did it in his basement. Basements are used to store junk anyway!
- MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bugger that, I want a projector that looks like the Death Star.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Guys, this dude is clearly fascinated about HT's and StarTrek and has enough money to do whatever he wants to do to his house. It's his own hobby and you gotta respect that. I hate StarTrek personally but the creativity behind it is outstanding. I'm sure if we all had as much money and spare time (not to mention skills) as this guy we'd be doing some pretty weird things. He gets a kick outta it, so good for him.
+digg - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, all the people that are attacking this guy to "get a life", you're the type that in high school would bully people because they weren't "just like you" right? Is your dick really that small that you have to belittle others to make your self feel superior?
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg effect. I couldn't get pictures on any of the links thus far in the comments.
If he actually did it, then cheers to him. He's got the time, money, and passion. What parts he chose are up to him. You dont have to have name brand to have good sound. The sound you want is just that, the sound you want. I've built many a home theatre system for rich yuppies back during the college days.... most people just want something, they dont care how it sounds. I on the other hand, have a certain sound I want based on what I watch and listen to. Maybe Polk/Yamaha is what this guy wants.
Another cool one is Steve Jenkins' Home Theatre (previously on digg): http://theater.stevejenkins.com/ - doafhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do the doors "whoosh" open automatically? I don't care what projector or sound system was used, if there's no whoosh, it's all useless!
- maxsunset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know why everyone thinks his theater costs soo much money... He really DIY'ed most of it, including the screen. The gear is hardly expensive. I definitley chose high value components that happen to have realativley high performance. I believe that projector is only like $3,500, less than most high-end gamer PC's! And that's probably the most expensive thing in the room (understandably)! Anyways, I applaud his efforts, that theater is bad ass!!
- pixelwerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This totally rocks!
Unfortunately, after the novelty wears off, the property value is pretty much toast. - pwrstick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On screen!
- javvidal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn! Digg always seems to slow the servers.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If we can't do what we love, why are we here?
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's amazing and VERY cool!
- sl4shn0t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's gorgeous. a bit geeky for me, but great job
- junkking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg for the workmanship. Undigg for the design. He added 3 too many chairs for the usual number of people in the room.
- maxsunset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excuse me, "HE definitley chose high value components that happen to have realativley high performance." I have no affiliation to this dude, but I have worked in audio/video retail, so I know the relative value of his gear.
- Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol..this is classic
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's actually a bunch of people working on making the LCARS windowing system (such that it is) real.
Go to: http://www.lcarsdeveloper.com/ - borderpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its missing the big curvy computer console!
- Bender1001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Impressive setup (however I'd settle with having that Picard cut, lol).
- dorthensensens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy Shmokes! I like it!
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0amazing..
- cybermage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey that link to Steve Jenkins theater above...
I almost ended up working for him a few years back. At the last minute we decided there was too much turmoil in his company at the time and he recommended I wait. He sold the company a few months later... - eberts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All he watches on it is porn.
Space porn. - Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1YAY!!!
- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems to be a wee bit slow. Maybe it's just me.
Either way:
http://www.reighn.com.nyud.net:8090/theatermain.html - bootaw01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ugh, TOS. I'll digg when its TNG.
- kaisho99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe...digg affect...site dead.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Excuse me, "HE definitley chose high value components that happen to have realativley high performance." I have no affiliation to this dude, but I have worked in audio/video retail, so I know the relative value of his gear." - maxsunset
By "audio/video retail" you mean "I covered a few shifts at Best Buy" right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and the guy has a 3000GT, so to all you guys saying "OMG NURD" he's got a nicer car than you can ever dream of having.
- crawfordbay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome. Never been a StarTrek fan but the room is simply awesome!
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still better than that article in TV Guide ( I think) from a few years back about the dude that build a TOS bridge in his mom's basement and they used to act out stuff....
- RedZeppelin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is just too amazing for words. Me likey.
- artofwot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And that my friends is the official definition of a trekkie.
- alski707, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol, no digg, why? cos he mixed elements of TNS with TNG, there's old fashioned red and black nastyness with LCARS panels on the wall, wtf? =P
And if you understood any of that, get out of the house - NOW! - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is there anywhere to do a number 2?
- ReiToei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a whimsical room!
Dugg. - nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, that's gonna lower his property value. I mean, could you ever hope to sell that house with a room like that? You'd need to totally gut it before showing it to the real estate agent.
- greighn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry about the site. Evidently, all the recent traffic caused me to exceed the monthly bandwidth allotment of my hosting plan. I think (hope?) it will free up come the first of Feb.
The link below, graciously provided by greg-j, will show you a panorama of the theater until the site comes back. (Thanks, greg-j!)

Thanks everyone.
-Gary. - bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those of you griping about the cost of this, the real Enterprise bridge was built pretty cheaply. From Wrath of Khan til the last episode of Voyager, only one set was used for the bridge of all Starfleet ships. To represent different ships, they would just rearrange the wall panels and change the lighting.
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol, i wish i had that much time on my hands
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have the same opinion of this guy building a Star Trek basement as I do of Michael Jackson building an amusement park in his back yard. Both are creepy.
- buffymcmuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boldly reaching levels of sadness never before reached. Still cool though.
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Captain: "Main screen turn on!"

Sigh. - bubbazanetti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could the builder/owner or someone else put up a mirror to this site somewhere?
I would like to see what the hubub is about. - sdbryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This just has to be made less obscure for the slow learners out there. Within experimental error everyone gets laid. It is not an exotic or unusual activity. There are about six billion of us and we are all here because people were getting laid. Those who have been making snide comments need to get over themselves and realize that having sex is not exactly a defining activity. Having the skills and imagination to build something whimsical is something out of the ordinary. Parroting dim-witted stereotypes on the other hand is not a stroke of genius.
- overfl0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hey, baby...want to check out my home theatre? First, you have to put this uniform on and refer to me only as "captain". Wait, where are you going!??
