- dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the freefall was 4 1/2 muinutes...then his chute opened...
- dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did any of you actually read the article?
______
On Aug. 16, 1960, as research for the then-fledgling U.S. space program, Air Force Captain Joseph Kittinger rode a helium balloon to the edge of space, 102,800 feet above the earth, a feat in itself. Then, wearing just a thin pressure suit and breathing supplemental oxygen, he leaned over the cramped confines of his gondola and jumped--into the 110-degree-below-zero, near-vacuum of space. Within seconds his body accelerated to 714mph in the thin air, breaking the sound barrier. After free-falling for more than four and a half minutes, slowed finally by friction from the heavier air below, he felt his parachute open at 14,000 feet, and he coasted gently down to the New Mexico desert floor.
______
The video is NOT of him jumping it was a video showing a decent from that same altitude...his blood didn't boil...he DID break the sound barrier...this happened in 1960...102,800 feet = 19.469697 miles...with the varing speeds of his decent it took him 4 1/2 minutes.... - itzac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/skydive/?page=faq a typical decent rate with an open parachute is about 1000ft./min. so it's not unreasonable for Kittinger's jump to have taken around 20 minutes if he opened his chute at 14,000ft. The article says 12 or 13.
- DragonGirl724, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1link is dead
- sufferingant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1omg that awesome!!!
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats not a guy jumping out in the video. Its one of these
http://www.jpaerospace.com/away26.html - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, the whole burn up while re-entering the atmosphere has to do with the speed at which you are traveling and the angle of entry. The shuttle is going usualy somewhere between 16 and 24 thousand miles per hour (Mach 22-33) , while kittinger was going about 720 miles per hour (Mach 1). Contrary to popular belief, its not friction that heats you up on re-entry, its the pressure of the air against your ship as the atmosphere slows it down. If you were put in orbit, and allowed to free fall, technically you could survive re-entry without dying assuming you dont go much past Mach 1.
- drummerjed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only Air Force Office to wear Pilot wings, Helicopter wings and Ballon Wings. He is the only person to go Mach, without an aircraft. GOtta love Project ManHigh.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Worst. Title. Ever.
- freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now all we need is the flying squirrel guy doing this and we have the digg of the year!
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.dropzone.com/news/SpaceParachutingSkydivin.shtml
It didnt take him 40 minuets, that would be insane.. it took him 4 miuntes 30 seconds. - cainrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Video interview with Joe Kittinger no video of the jump.Even though there is one out there you can't find it.

8-) - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That picture made my stomach turn.
- darkdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, the video was about a person that jamp from 94,795 feet. It's clearly stated in the description.
- frankiejr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+094,795 feet
Drop: 4:48:27
Landing: 5:30:51
That's one hell of a long freefall. - MrZop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never skydived before. But i can garantee you that if asked, i would do that without thinking twice. So, if anybody needs a guy to break that record, i'm your man.
- Sweetdelight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no, the video of person going at 94k Feet isnt a person, its A Somewhat Satelite, well, Just a structure with Camera's
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0get this, I heard he broke the sound barrier. yeah, SOUND BARRIER BROKEN by a human.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, it said it was made on 10-18-2002. that's friggin tight though. i read about that guy doin the first jump in maxim or something a few years ago. told a friend about it and he didnt believe me. of course he also doesnt believe nasa landed someone on the moon.
- darkdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ blah.. typo >< "jumped" not "jamp" =P
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still don't get why he wouldn't burn up, man wouldn't that suck if you were working on teh space suttle or something(outside of course) and say somehow got blasted straight towards earth lol having to sit there and fall for 30 minutes... anyways very cool and worthy of a digg
- paintball102089, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is amazing
- pimpsallad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tweaq: presurized (SP) suits.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0funkyguy your an idiot. the video skipped a few minutes at a time. the video was showing a jump that lasted 25 minutes if you look at the little clock in the video from beginning of the jump to the end.
tweag, he had a special suit on if you haven't noticed. lol - da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well sttill he was in the air for like 15 minutes
- Numchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that teh shiet!! i wanna do it
- Viox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mama, i can flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The digg should've referred to the article or video, the image is kinda... dull :)
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if his heat shield was cracked
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0saw the footage on Discovery Channel...Kittinger has balls, that's for sure! :)
- DAPortman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looked like he hit pretty hard.
Looked like one crazy ride! - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I couldn't post the video as a separate story because of the space in the URL. I couldn't find the video of Kittingers jump, yes it does exist, but I do not know the magic search words to feed to the dragon google in order to summon it. The picture made me sufficiently nauseous, so I posted it.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out some footage here. http://digg.com/science/Now_on_Video:_Captain_Kittinger_jumps_from_space_-_20_miles_skydiving
- carlic578, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The total fall from the time he jumped to the time he landed was 42 minutes and 24 seconds
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now they need to get the guy who jumps without a parachute, with his cool gliding suit, and throw him out at 102,800 ft. hell, they could make it an on demand event! i'd pay to watch that.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for that link. Should post it to digg? Maybe?
- robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, that was pretty incredible. The way it ended was awesome. I'm glad he didn't talk at the end or do anything.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0antispammer, yes the video is. I couldn't find the video of Kittingers jump.
- BassKozz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AWESOME
This goes down in my book as the Digg of the YEAR !!! - mknewman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of "Dark Star", John Carpenter's first film, at the end where the asstronaut surfs from orbit.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069945/ - version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 "If my protection suit failed, I would be dead in a few seconds. Blood actually boils above 62,000 feet."
Major Balls it tell ya... - monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, if google dosn't find it, it probably isn't there.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea I posted that here http://digg.com/links/The_ORIGINAL_Fastest_Man_On_EARTH_John_Stapp.
But no one seems to digg it. (ok hardly anyone.) - acemilo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw a show on history or discovery about this a few years ago. Ya, its pretty nuts, he's the only person to break the speed of sound without a vehicle. Crazy.
- itzac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ thatsiebguy: You're thinking of the only guy to ever ride a rocket sled, at least wrt to the face puffed out and eyes swelling shut. The point was to see just how many Gs of stopping force a human could survive.
- ((PolyAst)), on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That guy's gone nads the size of freakin' watermelons! :)
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IIRC, he was in recovery for some time after that because his legg swelled up like a balloon because the circulation to it got cut off on the way up from some strap. And because of the pressure changes during the fall, his face was all puffed out and eyes swelled shut for a few days.. I'd have to see the Discovery show about it again.
- ((PolyAst)), on 10/12/2007, -0/+0antispammer's right... Not a guy but still a pretty sweet vid.
- hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could tell by just watching the video that it wasn't a person.. no person would want to spin around and around like that.. sky divers keep themselves straight, you would get so sick if you fell like that, it was nausiating just watching the video! and the landing was way too hard for a real person.
