- Topher06, on 11/15/2007, -2/+274Depends on what you define as "High Quality" video. Higher resolution streams won't improve the "quality" of much of YouTube's content.
- lucidguru, on 11/15/2007, -17/+202"the service is testing a player that detects the speed of the viewer's Net connection and serves up higher-quality video if they want it."
Translation: most Americans will still get the crappy low quality video because they're stuck with providers like comcast and quest, while the rest of the world and their vastly higher bandwidths will enjoy high quality video. - dukeeeey, on 11/15/2007, -6/+118on stage6 u can upload videos of any bitrate/resolution
- arcooke, on 11/15/2007, -2/+88As good of news as this is.. unfortunately "Youtubers" will still be recording their videos on their $20 webcams. It's like watching regular TV on a 60" 1080p HDTV. Not to mention all the jackasses that rip videos off other websites and re-upload them as their own making the quality even worse than it originally was.
- LeviticusKrain, on 11/15/2007, -3/+86Chris Crocker in hi-def.... *shudders*
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -10/+69High quality YouPorn videos instead, plz
- carlj133, on 11/15/2007, -19/+69Not living in America FTW!!
- squirrelza, on 11/15/2007, -2/+50Now I can take music videos off YouTube at better quality
- MrPresident13, on 11/15/2007, -1/+41Vimeo for "HD", Youtube for "High Quality?" Google, just buy Vimeo while you're at it.
- Ricky8765, on 11/15/2007, -2/+35"On stage, he said the current resolution of YouTube videos has been "good enough" for the site up till now."
Excuse me? Up until now the current resolution has sucked... If I can't watch something full screen without my brain wondering what the ***** I'm looking at, it's not "good enough." - gweedo767, on 11/15/2007, -0/+30Just like you need Flash for YouTube...
- heyitsgarrett, on 11/15/2007, -1/+29Now if only they could figure out a way to stop letting retards comment on their site..
- SkippyDoorknob, on 11/15/2007, -0/+27"Verizon FiOS Internet Service is not currently available for your address. Our network is continually being expanded, and we don't want you to miss the opportunity to get this state-of-the-art Internet service."
- MrPresident13, on 11/15/2007, -2/+29The audio will still be horrible
- juventusc, on 11/15/2007, -0/+27anyone ever heard of stage6? almost every video is HD and super high quality.
- mlostracco, on 11/15/2007, -1/+26Most YouTube videos look like ass because they're multiply-compressed, horribly captured and crappily shot before they're even uploaded. Garbage in, garbage out.
- Splitt3rxx, on 11/15/2007, -12/+34wtf are you talking about? comcast has plenty of bandwidth for high quality video, I get 10/1mbps up/down speeds
- dark_helmet, on 11/15/2007, -2/+24HD video (720P) can be done decently at 4-5Mbps, most decent North American connections can do this. I doubt they'll be serving HD video, probably just closer to SD
- AndrewWiggin, on 11/15/2007, -3/+22You have 10 mbps upload?!?!
- mlostracco, on 11/15/2007, -0/+19It's not Rick Astley, in case anyone is wondering.
- Mimorox, on 11/15/2007, -1/+19It's already possible to make videos somewhat high quality, like this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxXwIIBlSgw - BoneStamp, on 11/15/2007, -0/+18They have a number of options:
1. Increase the resolution and datarate of the existing FLV files (flash video) - possible.
2. Bump the flash player requirement to version 8, allowing On2 VP6 video (higher quality at lesser file size than current youtube videos which use Sorenson codec) - This is the option I would choose if I were them.
3. Use the h.264 support coming in the next version of the flash player (not likely), although it would mean they could use the same videos for the web and the iPhone, instead of maintaining two sets of files.
4. Move away from the flash player entirely (not likely). - mrgoat, on 11/15/2007, -0/+17Excellent, skate boarding dogs in higher quality. I have been waiting for this! Thank you YouTube!
- SkippyDoorknob, on 11/15/2007, -1/+17:-(
"Verizon FiOS Internet Service is not currently available for your address. Our network is continually being expanded, and we don't want you to miss the opportunity to get this state-of-the-art Internet service." - Ramble, on 11/15/2007, -0/+15For someone like me who sometimes rips sections off live TV (PAL) then the higher quality will be more apprectiated.
- tomwhughes, on 11/15/2007, -1/+16haha same here :)
....but i'm living in Australia with worse internet :(
blast! - ShooterMcGavin, on 11/15/2007, -3/+17Oh, I don't know... I live in America and just recently signed on for 8Mb cable internet. Some evenings I can top out at pulling over 1MB per second. Of course, my upload speed sucks, but what can ya do?
- parkermauney, on 11/15/2007, -1/+15on digg u can speked any langage england
- huntersquid, on 11/15/2007, -0/+14We should all have fiber by now. Why are we using copper again?
- arcooke, on 11/15/2007, -2/+15Damnit. I was seriously hoping I would never hear that name again. Thanks a lot.. I'm going to go buy some razor blades now. Brb.
- Dustmuffins, on 11/15/2007, -2/+15Adblock that *****
- neckaros, on 11/15/2007, -0/+12It does because the file the Flash player would access would be the same than the file the iPhone access. So no need to have 3 files for the same video (1 for iPhone 1 for web 1 original)
- Splitt3rxx, on 11/15/2007, -3/+13stage6 is the best, but you need a DivX plugin to use it.
- SiNN4R, on 11/15/2007, -0/+10High resolution porn has its disadvantages. For instance being able to diagnose STDs.
- hmunkey, on 11/15/2007, -2/+12Comcast is actually a good and fast connection. The company is just stupid because of torrent throttling.
- seanieb, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Too late youtube, stage6 FTW.
- BoneStamp, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8You need an upgrade or a rebuild (fresh install)... 'cause youtube should not bring your computer down.
- lambda, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6digg is the best, but you need a web browser program to use it. :-)
- Snyder, on 11/15/2007, -2/+8@ M4cb0y
No... 10/1 Mbps down/UP = 1 Mbps upload - BoneStamp, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6You're right, the iPhone doesn't support Flash... which is what I was saying about YouTube maintaining two sets of files. They currently maintain one set of files for flash enabled clients and a second set of files in h.264 format JUST for the YouTube player on the iPhone (it's on the home screen, "springboard" ). As I said, if they made all their videos h.264 then they would no longer need two sets of files.
- dezertrat, on 11/15/2007, -1/+6do you have a 286? my pc is almost 4 years old and has you tube playing, many firefox windows, email, blah blah and is a t 18-14% cpu usage
- ttfadia, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5You're right, Vimeo has fantastic quality even before their HD service. Plus, their player and entire site look awesome.
- AndrewWiggin, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5I know how advertising works and all, but almost 5 million people have watched that Snow Patrol YouTube music video and I just can't see enough people clicking ads to recoup the bandwidth costs. I mean, the only time I ever click ads (except for a couple well targeted AdSense ads) is when I am trying to support a website. And I've certainly never bought anything by clicking on an ad (though, perhaps, indirectly by seeing the ad, but that hardly happens with the internet's ads since they're so senseless).
- 0xFEEDFACE, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4As someone who's done freelance work as a retoucher for adult sites, trust me when I say this: you do not want to see most porn in HD.
Seriously. A lot of photoshoots are retouched (often quite substantially), and from what I've seen HD movies do a great job at revealing all the minor blemishes (and all the major ugly) on the actresses.
You're better off with SD and a good imagination.
[Note: I'm in no way "in" the porn biz, I've just done some freelance work for them, as I have no moral objections to such work.] - manti5, on 11/15/2007, -3/+7You mean to tell me that I can watch lame video blogs in higher quality! Golly gee!
- shadowfoxmi, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4it's about frikkin' time
- 42Vindictive, on 11/15/2007, -2/+6Yay Canada!
- insllvn, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4I am on the notification mailing list, and can't wait to get FiOS in my area. I'm salivating at that proposed 20Mbps symmetrical. Mmmmm.... symmetry.
- likephatec, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4some examples of this have been up for months...
