- granolajoe, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7Those are tough questions. Living in a city with an highly visible amount of homeless people, there is no 100% correct approach. However, if I had access to this type of money, I would use it to educate and empower those people who are most motivated to get off the street. I think the idea of web-related training and laptop access is great, and could help people get the necessary resources to find a job online.
- ubernoggin, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7Interesting. Are they homeless or home-page-less?
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4both I guess
- nathanTbaker, on 09/12/2009, -0/+2Many homeless people have jobs actually. And many panhandlers aren't homeless. These are some of the misconceptions that if talked about, can help us see the best ways we can come together a society.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Here's an internet/homeless idea. Build a quarter-flinging machine hooked up to a webcamera and interface. People would be able to buy quarters over the internet and then aim and fire them at the homeless - all from the comfort of their chair. The homeless would get money, the web folks would get some entertainment - everybody wins! You could wheel this machine around to various locations in a city where the homeless hang out. I know I'd spend $5 before it got old.
- nathanTbaker, on 09/12/2009, -0/+2Homeless aren't always looking for money, and it's not always the best help at the time. A huge burden is often lack of dynamic community for instance. The Internet offers a great chance at networking and community. This effort is aimed at providing education from a homeless perspective as well as empowering homeless.
- wh0re, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Junkies with valuable laptops... Good Plan. Woudn't an internet cafe be a better idea?
- chadwalters23, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Wouldn't people be even less inclined to give spare change to a homeless guy with a laptop?
- wh0re, on 10/16/2008, -0/+0Well maybe your situation is different in America, but here in the UK the majority of our homeless people are addicts of some description. They do deserve a voice though and I'm sure many homeless people have some great stories detailing life on the streets.
Good Luck with this project. Educate and Empower rather Ignore and Enslave. (Government take-note!) - nathanTbaker, on 09/12/2009, -0/+0We would be focusing on supporting homeless and chronically homeless (people that go in and out of homelessness). They could be blogging already, in which case, we support their writing, but we also with try to make it easier for other homeless in Nashville to blog if they want to get started.
- mollizabeth, on 10/16/2008, -0/+0While there are certainly homeless people with drug and alcohol addictions (the same way there are non-homeless with addictions), the vast majority are not struggling with substance abuse issues. Either way, though, they deserve to have a voice. Certainly there will need to be an infrastructure of security in place (mostly for the safety of the homeless person) but I don't think that by putting laptops in the hands of the homeless, we're just throwing them away as you imply.
However, an Internet Cafe would be a good idea as a supplement to this plan. Well done.
