- FyreGoddess, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34You're not going to become famous by blogging. Accept that now. Even bloggers who are considered "famous" are generally unknown outside the blogosphere.
There's really only one reason to blog and that's for your own personal satisfaction. Sure, there are plenty of ways to get more people to read your blog - ONCE, but if you're not interesting enough to capture the attention of people who don't know you, then none of the tips, no matter how wonderful they are, are going to give you a leg up.
There are millions of blogs out there, most of which have a handful of readers at best. Not to say that people shouldn't try to be one of the top 100, but really... are you going to be? Realistically, you're not, so just blog for yourself, read other blogs, comment if you have something worth saying and be happy with that much.
Hell, if you have a couple of friends who read and maybe even comment, you're doing better than the sheer plethora of blogs that have 0 comments and 1 reader - the author. - catfish182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28ha i wish i could get a person to read my blog.
cant even get my mom to read it - holzp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Google's web crawler is my only blog reader. :(
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26This is some interesting blogspam.
"Very helpful", "great tips", "great article", "interesting post", blehhhhh. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19socialmedia I have a sneaking suspicion that someone pays you to make positive comments on Digg. If this is true it is very sad.
Let's all read some of socialmedia's comments and see when was the last time he/she had anything insightful to say other than fawning all over every article he/she comments on shall we?

You must be the only user on Digg who never attempts to be funny and only has positive feedback for every comment they make! - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11http://www.digg.com/users/Lqsouza/news/commented
Wow this is the first and only comment you have ever made eh? I can see how you would have read this amazing article from chitka.com and just HAD TO GO sign up for a Digg account to make the insightful comment:
"Great tips from Darren. Read it and start your blog; you will have enough information to start a successful blog."
DIAF. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The first four comments on this appear to be paid for.
http://digg.com/tech_news/Fight_that_blogging_urge - Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I love how every "get readers to my blog!" has to do with social-networking sites. There are just too many blogs in the year 2007 to even keep up with that. I think it's much simpler. Write a good blog and they will come. Quality writing (I HATE the word 'content') will do more to spread your name than say getting a front page on Digg where a swarm of people come and go. Of course, if it's enticing material AND you can effectively get the word spread around through social networking sites than it should just be a matter of sitting back and watching the readers return again and again.
And for crying out loud, don't come off as some uber authority on every topic of the world just because you set up wordpress. I've seen plenty of blogs where the writer has gotten hostile and demeaning in the comments section. Engage your readers. If they are nitwits out trolling ignore them. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12For those of you who don't feel like reading the article, let me sum it up:
Spam, Spam, Spam your blog - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If your mom is your only blog reader that is because she is THE ONLY ONE INTERESTED IN ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO SAY.
Hell, even she is only interested because you told her to go read it and because you are her offspring so by some odd transitivity she created your crappy blog (and as such she should be thoroughly disappointed in herself).
Here are ZeroMP's tips to getting more blog readers:
1) Never again use the word blog - this word is ***** ridiculous. It's a damn website not a blog - get over yourself.
2) FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING TO SAY (that is for you to actually say - don't just copy/paste the content of some other site and then think it is okay because you linked back to them) This reminds me - it is called linking, don't ever use the term "trackback" or I will find you and kill you. If you can't think up anything interesting to say then why the hell would you want anyone to be bored to death by reading your unimaginative tripe anyway?
3) Submit everything you write (or copy with total disregard to #2) to Digg. Enjoy watching it hit 2 diggs and 0 comments - it will be fun! Wait for people to ridicule it as blogspam, then bury it as spam, and then link the original source via "comment-abuse".
There, now you are the average ***** blogger! - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11And if I knew who Perez Hilton or Matt Drudge were, maybe your point would have meaning.
- Geekazoid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@FyreGoddess
I wanted to agree with your statement, but then I thought about a similar situation that has been having the same results. And that is Music. There are millions of starving musicians out there and I know from personal experience that if you tell them that they will never get big, never go national and never be signed to a record deal, not that its desirable anymore, they will tell you to ***** off. They will continue to play ***** bars and "go on tour" in their own state, and be living for nothing. There will be some that make it, and definitely some that change music entirely. Maybe one of them will even change the music business because we all know it needs it. I think the same goes for blogging, you or I don't know what new innovation is around the corner, and it may be one of these dime a dozen bloggers that's going to get the ball rolling - jevb007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Here is the key. Are you writing a blog about your own life? Probably. Then stop. Nobody is reading for a reason.
- impedance101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5First time i tried the link it was 'defraging'. Havent seen such a lame excuse for a bad server in a long time.
- civperc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree. It's once you let go of page view, popularity, etc. that you really start writing quality content from your gut. ironic because that's when traffic starts to rise. Worrying about traffic does nothing, but WRITING gets the ball rolling :-)
- KIERANMULLEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tip:Provide timely information (not old dugg stories) and topics people are interested in. Further provide them with a point of view and or information not found elsewhere. Break down information into multiple pages only due to having too much content, not to fill adspace. Don't use ads to start off with, only put ads in when your readership volume allows for it. You are not going to get rich off of your grandma viewing. Google's min payout is $100 although it does roll over.
- civperc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Once again Darren aka Captain Obvious has managed to re-word the same useless run-around.
I used to read his site @ problogger.net every day but then I quickly realized it's 99% fluff and the best thing to do is just start blogging and go for it. No amount of reading "blog advice" on the 'net will bring you valuable traffic. WRITING just might though. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No *****. This is blogspam itself.
Let's all bury this as Spam please and maybe it will get permanently removed from Digg. - phimu227, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6screw blogging. 9 times out of 10 it is lame ass trying to get attention. nobody gives a ***** what is going on in your life. get out and meet some new people and do something different with your life.
- kahrn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blogging isn't about the amount of hits you get. It's the amount of people you inspire and the experiences you talk about which are relevant to the readers, or just generally providing information that will be useful to someone. Or maybe just providing an open-public sort of diary which everyone can come read.
That said, I'd say 9/10 bloggers are just interested in things like page views, readers and rofl, getting famous. - FyreGoddess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1geekazoid: I hear what you're saying, but these are not whiny musicians who are sitting around complaining "Why won't anyone listen to my music? How do I make people like me?"
The musicians like the ones you mention are out there networking, playing open mics, submitting demos to local venues, getting their music on the internet. They're not sitting around feeling hopeless. They're not hoping that they'll be the next American Idol or waiting to be discovered on a reality show.
If you're going to make the parallel with bloggers, then you have to work with the concept that any blogger that stands a chance of gaining "fame" (or at least internet fame) is already doing the things that are given as tips and sure as hell isn't sitting around bemoaning the fact that only his mom is reading his blog. - cactus476, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well.... I guess not anymore.
- oesj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zeromp
those were some super tips on spotting spammers. great link. let's all start our spammer-hunting adventure. - TiKoZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And what's with the weird design?!
- webduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Do you want links, but you are saying you want someone to read your blog? DoshDosh's Technorati Experiment got me a lot of links, and a few readers. If you are truly interested in getting new readers, go read someone else's blog and comment. Keep in mind, if you add me to your faves in Technorati, it is sure easier to find you again. If you link to me and blog about it, then we both win. Just something to think about.
The biggest problem I have is that there just are not enough hours in the day to read blogs, write my own stuff and make it meaningful, and do all the other "mundane" things I need to do too. I am not here to get famous. If you like what I write, fine, and thank you. If not, then with all the millions of blogs out there, I am sure you will find something you will like to read. - musntSurfatWork, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Is she hot at least?
- maverick001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"socialmedia" is a bot
- mysurface, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seriously, my mom is not my blog reader either.
- nitrojunky24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1find or have something interesting to say or don't waste your time or just except that your mom is the only one who reads your blog!
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"You're not going to become famous by blogging. Accept that now. Even bloggers who are considered "famous" are generally unknown outside the blogosphere."
Tell me about it. There's someone at a messageboard I go to that started a thread titled "I'm, like, famous" because she's now a "permablogger" at a major Mormon website. Ooookay, whateverrr... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Blogging is about idiots with a ridiculous ego thinkingthat anyone gives ***** about theit opinions.
At least 12 year old girls have the good sense to realize that no one wants to read their diary. But suddenly when peoepl, even men, decide to keep a diary online, they think that people want to read it. - sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1two easy steps.
1. get your blog's only reader to post n00dz
2. watch your traffic spike - FairlyStupid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Hey is it ok to say it now? http://NobodyReadsYourStupidBlog.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This is true of 99.99999% of blogs
- lensman00, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5I dugg up the parent comment.
I'm not a blogger, but I've run a niche web forum for over 10 years, and I remember the first couple of weeks when I seriously wondered if it would ever catch on. The advice in the article about search optimization, and about trading a little quality content for some publicity, would probably not occur to a lot of new bloggers.
The article also serves as a pretty good quick guide to etiquette on social sites: don't be a spammer, contribute some original ideas to the conversation, etc.
I know there is tendency to want to bash authors with a lot of exposure, and this Rowse guy is certainly one of them. But he does have insights to offer and he understands how to write for an audience. - idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1www.yourmom.com
