- deeboe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+210OK, this might be an unpopular opinion, but what did this guy expect? It is a little unrealistic to expect Google to change their maps for this damn event!
- nipterink, on 10/11/2007, -0/+123how about you put directions on the school website.
- mattxb, on 10/11/2007, -5/+125I hope google maps updates their satellite photo before his event, otherwise it will have been for nothing (except a cool story I guess)
- nymphetamine, on 10/11/2007, -10/+101That's what she said.
- unrequited, on 10/11/2007, -4/+71http://maps.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=22040&query=satellite&topic=&type=
...now all this guy has to do is wait 1-3 years for the satellite imagery to be updated. asshat. > ) - Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -5/+67buried as lame. this is a dumb story about an idiot. in fact, it's not even a story. just 2 emails from a guy asking Google for special treatment.
- JasonHilton, on 10/11/2007, -7/+57That thing is smaller then a car, does he honestly think it would show up even if a new sat image was taken?
- RetroRufio, on 10/11/2007, -7/+55because this new digg style sucks
- jonessodaholic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+49This reminds me of Richard Ankrom who also took matters into his own hands, and installed a traffic sign, that had been missing, above the northbound Harbor Freeway in downtown Los Angeles to help motorists.
http://www.thisistrue.com/freeway.html - DiggzDE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33Google's response: "Sure, let us just quickly re-allign our corporate partner's satellites and take them off their pre-set course, spending thousands of dollars in the process, to be sure to help you with this problem....
or, maybe you can just put up some signs at the entrance of the college to direct your attendees like any other organizer would." - smkelly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31Does this guy not realize what kind of overhead it'd be for Google to add and remove temporary markers? They'd need a fleet of trained monkeys and specially designed typewriters, or something.
- willk281, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27wait, the maps wont update in time...
- loqqq, on 10/11/2007, -7/+29I think most "non-techie" people still use MapQuest -- just an observation. He would have spent the time more profitably working with the caterer.
- shigness17, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Dear Google,
I will be building a tree fort in my backyard and will be staying in it from June 27-30. Please update your maps so the marker for my address is placed above the tree in my yard for those days and those days only. I don't want anyone who might be trying to find me to get confused and knock on my house door.
Thanks,
Some ***** - trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24@diegoferreyra
You're like a couple months behind the times man.
Keys have changed and will continue to change as long as idiots like you keep running their mouths. - robbh66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Event is already going on- chances it'll get changed before it's over is a million to one.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Too much alcohol.
- sublimethinker, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23What the ***** just happened to the comments?!
- coldphoenix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19refresh, you are probably looking at cached buttons.

Link to map. - seanc6610, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Touche, sir. I was about to say the same exact thing but I couldn't see that you already said it because of this really awesome, cool, amazing, state-of-the-art comment system.
- spenceman01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16...and chances are that if they're using Google Maps, they won't be using the Aerial photo or the Hybrid options.
- SoundJudgment, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Reminds me of a Google Satellite image of a small island in the Pacific. If you zoom in along the beachfront to the West, you can clearly make out a marking in the sand similar to: S O S
- clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I have to agree. Google would be making the searches wrong (providing a temporary location when the real location isn't moving) and you just can't go around adding markers for every event someone thinks should be up there.
- Ayatollah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13wow, a lot of people here are "siding" with Google and think this guy is an idiot (saying it's impractical, foolish and lame)
he was able to turn a "misunderstanding" into a cool piece of meta-art to accompany the rest of the art exhibition
awesome piece of pop art - goeatsmsht, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Plus the fact that it takes a while for new satellite photos to be put into use on google, mapquest, Microsoft live, etc....
Althought that is a sweet idea, I might put one on my roof. - clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Seriously. Asking google to put a marker next to a tent.... which would be wrong for what people are searching for. If people are searching for the college and find the college, that's what should happen. Not search for the college and find yourself taken to some other location. Stupid idea.
- cuoops, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11He says when his college is searched it shows the college building with the marker.
hmmm, sounds like it's working correctly...... - np374, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10plus the title is misleading
- MillionsLivio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10This was a waste of time and simply putting a sign up where the Art Museum normally is telling where the new "tent" is would be much more efficient. It would show everyone regardless of where they got the directions from where the "tent" is. I also am not sure a "tent" for art students is a "major event" either.
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10does google have enough staff to field personal requests like this?
i agree that his marker (clever as it may be) seems WAY too small..... *if* it's updated in time. i notice that some specific areas are pretty old. at times i have noticed part of Philly being a few years old (they had a long ago imploded stadium in the images). if they take time to update a city with construction, i would think a field is low priority. - bristevens, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Wow, this has helped me so many times when I have been going to LA from OC on the 5. I could tell it didn't quite match, but I have always been happy that it was there.
- Zuhaib, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10BS.
Sorry, my father has a business (a small one at that) and they have sent us a card a long time ago when he got originally listed on google maps on how to update our information if there was a ever a change. So having this guy just E-Mail the regular google maps E-Mail, he is going to get the computer response. Also on googles website they have special instructions on how to get in touch when you need to update a listing. Nice little digg story, but i dont buy it (or the guy is just totally dumb)
EDIT: Also the Digg new comments still has some bugs.. I have never gotten a session timeout error before while commenting. - grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9It would be worse if the satellite photo is taken now but not actually processed by google for 6 months. Then folk will be confused for the next couple of years with two A's.
- AnthonyA7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Alt-F4
- Toasterstrudull, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It said on the page that it was exactly the right size so that at full zoom on google it will be the same size as a regular marker
- ryanschmidt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8This commenting blows. We're going to miss so many cool comments that people take so long to think of.
- RichGC, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Spot on, I had to manually empty my cache as the browser was holding onto the old images.
- funkydopeloven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6link?
- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6They don't have monkeys, but they do have a team of specially-trained pigeons ;) :
http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html - BuckyDent, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Hold on, thats not how google does it?
- andykee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6fake?
his second email never would have made it to google, at least not if he sent it to local-help@google.comm - demonotaku, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I think it was meant to be witty. But hey, that's just me.
- nymphetamine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humor
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Your all overlooking the fact that it would have to be the satellite that picks up his 'home-made' marker and his intention is to have people find it on a map. Who uses the satellite feature for directions? Duh!
- Caydel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Exactly. I still run into enough people who are amazed when shown Google Maps
- neo17262, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Perhaps longer than that. In my neck of the woods (Suburbs of Dallas) the detailed, street level satellite imagery hasn't been updated for about 7 years. Want to know how I know? The church across my street has been completed for the same number of years, CONTRARY to what Google Maps displays...
- eric0213, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Why are any images on the Internet blurry? The image is 14x14 but being the image tag is set to 18x18. I'm guessing the Digg deities will work their magic and correct this issue before too long.
